Why does Kevoth-Kul like dogs?

Iron Gods

It says in book 5 he likes dogs and lets wild dogs live in his palace. What exactly was the point of this detail? Is it just to make him more likable (he does seem like a pretty big jerk otherwise.)

I think it is to make him seem more likable. Otherwise, the heroes may see killing him as an entirely appropriate option. (... then again, it kind of is.)

Not sure every point of detail really needs "a point", it can be just fun background flavor or something else.

Also I doubt anybody would avoid killing him just because of dogs :p Like I think main reason to avoid killing him is because he is respected by lot of locals and because he is manipulated by drug haze, not regarding who he is currently under the drug fueled hedonism

Likewise, his liking of dogs isn't going to stop a group inclinded to kill him because of "who he is currently under the drug fueled hedonism."

While my group isn't "murder hobos," they tend to take a hard line with certain things.

? Yes isn't that what I said? Just because he still likes dogs despite being completely off his rocker wouldn't really motivate party to cast heal on him. Reason why party would cast heal on him IS because he is completely crazy in the current state :p

Effectively. His liking (or not) of dogs will have no impact on what the PCs are likely to do.

I was just expanding on that, it goes both ways. You're group would heal him, my group will most likely end him.

I imagine a good-aligned group would try to cure him, or at least depose him without killing him (as he's terrible at his job as a ruler, but it's not really his fault). A neutral or evil party would just kill him I'd think.

I mean, even pragmatism wise, there are two reasons related to curing Kevoth-Kul that aren't related to ethics:

1) City would fall into anarchy with leader cut off

2) Kevoth-Kul would have strong motivation to crush Technic League

Our group changed them to being specifically corgis. He was just this completely insane barbarian, surrounded by dozens and dozens of beloved corgis. It worked for us.

I know this is an old thread but something sort of related: another room in the palace has some prisoners being tortured with green slime, which seems... not so neutral. I'm thinking maybe of making up some reason for the people being imprisoned and tortured that makes Kul look better, such as he caught the people abusing his dogs and that's why they're being punished (honestly, I'd be fine with people like that getting dissolved in slime.)

I used the dogs as him clinging to his last sense of himself. I also got a chance to signify his power when a giant accidentally hurt one, then panicked as to what the wrath of Kevoth would be.
My players tread carefully around the dogs after that.
