While I wasn't necessarily expecting a 5 round competition, having it be a single round seems to make this more of simply a design a monster contest rather than RPG Superstar. Happy to see it's back in some form to help develop new talent, but must admit I'm less excited after the details than I was before.

It's actually two rounds. The first round gets the top 101 monsters and is done by RPG professionals. The second round is public and ranks the monsters by the public.

It's still one round of entries. The first round has always been judges select the top X, and then voters pick who advances (or in this case, who wins).

It think calling it RPG Superstar and using the same logo etc. unfortunately makes it seem like it was going to be like previous Paizo run RPG Superstars, with the same structure, the same prizes, and the same ultimate goal of being published by Paizo.

While this is certainly kind of similar ... kind of, it’s clearly not the same RPG superstar folks knew and were probably expecting.

It probably would have been better, and more transparent, to use a different name instead of make it look at first glance like it was actually Paizo bringing back RPG Superstar.

Not a criticism, honestly! But I think it’s perfectly valid and understandable if some people are disappointed and / or confused by this contest

It's officially licensed, so there's that.

I agree, in the old contest, it was fun to see who made items you liked, and then see what else they can do for a monster. And then see how they do on a map etc.

And also it gave people a chance to take feedback and apply it to the next round's entry. Here it's just 1 monster, with no chance of growth for the designer as the contest progresses.

I think calling it something else would really hurt it. I and several others did a Superstar style contest (not home right now so can’t link it) and while we got a lot more entries than I was expecting honestly, participation afterward really dropped off. I think making it Superstar should really help avoid that.

I'll add, that as a developer, the most valuable part of RPG Superstar was finding new talent. This new revamp is going to do that exact same thing. And, I may be biased, but I think monster creation shows a good mix of talents and was one of the rounds that I paid the most attention to (and judged) in the past.

I agree with Adam. Monster entries do test contestants on a larger mix of crunch and flavor capabilities than you can normally get in the magic item round. You get a lot more words. There are a lot more rules elements potentially in play. And, there's a lot more opportunity to showcase your creativity, both in the monster concept, as well as its origin/habitat/ecology. It also foreshadows how well these contestants can envision new monsters from an adventure-writing perspective...i.e., what kind of adventure seeds or scenarios where they might feature. So, it's a good microcosm for evaluation. A bit longer than a magic item and a lot shorter than a full-blown adventure proposal or encounter location.

Also, for those who might be disappointed by the single round of competition, I did ask one of the organizers about it, and they indicated they're starting small for now, but it may expand to include more rounds the next time they do it. And, if so, Jacob and I have both offered to lend a hand if we have time.
