Thybidos (spoilers)

Return of the Runelords

So, did your group free and re-assemble Thybidos (and have to fight him?) Or did they have him apologize? Also, why does he attack the PCs if they free him? Even considering he's CE this makes no sense to me: "You freed me from thousands of years of torture, in return I'm going to... kill you?" What sense does that make?

It makes sense when you consider that he's not in the right state of mind, is an awful person to begin with, and might be quite a bit mortified and frustrated at his own failures and be looking for someone to take his anger out on, especially if doing so also helps him wipe out anyone who might have witnessed his rescue. With the deaths of those who freed him, no one is left to claim an alternate narrative to anything he comes up with to bolster his own ego and hide the fact that he failed and was imprisoned in the first place.

Of course I will always agree with Mr. Jacobs! I imagine his general eagerness for pain and death together with his anger overcome his instinct to reward those that freed him. Plus he would never admit that he had to rely on others to free himself!

My party ended up having him apologize and found themselves disappointed at his subsequent crumble to dust. It was hilarious.
