Animal Companion Question

Rules Discussion

Greetings!

I am unable to find the rules regarding Barding (Armor) for Animal Companions. I see where it is mentioned that they can wear it, but I see no corresponding information about it.

What type of armor?
How much does it cost?
Is pricing different depending on size of animal?

On a slightly different note, is there a difference between small and medium sized creatures/characters mechanically? Bonus to hit? Higher AC? Easier to grapple? I am leaning towards no but would like to locate clarification.

Thanks for the help!

Hey! Check out CRB 295.

Thanks!

So if I understand this correctly:

For 10gp I can buy Light Barding to gain 1 AC, -1 Armor Check Penalty, - 5ft speed penalty, 2 bulk, and they need to have a +3 STR modifier to even wear it?

Seems an awful price to pay for 1 AC.

Yeah, it's pretty rough. Overall, animal companions and familiars are some of the only things I'm unhappy with about 2e, it feels like they should have been able to do some really cool things with the feat system but they all wind up feeling the same and pretty underwhelming.

No. Just like regular armor, if you meet the strength requirement you don't take the armor check and speed penalties. You can wear the boarding without the STR, but then you do take those penalties.

Nice! Off to battle we go!

Special Armor for your Cat

Squirrel Knight

something adorably fierce at Dark Sword Miniatures (bear? raccoon?)

And yes, it's a raccoon. You gotta arm and armor your raccoon AC for the battle. If it's named "bitey" you might be in the same "Rise of the Goblinlords" campaign Treantmonk is in (broadcast and DM'd by Karsh the Goblin on youtube, using, so far, PF1 rules).

My PFS character has an animal companion: a Badger (so +2 Str). My thought process:
Young Animal Companion: Barding isn't worth the movement penalty.
Mature Animal Companion: 10 gp is not a lot of money at 4th level, sure I'll grab light barding.
Nimble/Savage: If I decide to go Nimble (and I'm leaning in that direction), I will no longer need barding, since Nimble companions get expert in Unarmored Defense. If I go savage, I'll then upgrade to Heavy Barding.
