Drinking potions (or anything else) through a scarf

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

I am going to be running an adventure next game session where the characters are going to be covering their mouths with scarves in order to avoid breathing in a magical mist. I'm wondering what would happen when it comes to swallowing potions and other liquids though. Do I make them pull the scarves down, exposing themselves to the mist, when they need to do this or do I let them drink potions through the scarf?

Welp, if it's only breathing the mist that's a problem, it's not really a problem. Unless they forget that they can hold their breath while drinking, they should be fine even if they pull down their scarves for a minute. If it's corrosive mist that they don't want to expose themselves to, I'd use straws.

Tangentially related, you use Potion Sponges when underwater.

Personally I would say that drinking a potion will cause them to be exposed. Any scarf able to keep out mist for any length of time is going to need to be water resistant or the mist will eventually penetrate the scarf. In reality the scarf should only work for a short time anyways.

I don’t think you can drink a potion while holding your breath in this case. To drink a potion you need to open your mouth and swallow. This will allow the mist to enter your body. At this point a saving throw would be appropriate to see if they were able to drink the potion quickly enough before enough of the mist entered their mouth.

Using a potion sponge would work.

Liberty's Edge

It all depends on how the mist work and how the scarf is protecting them from the magical mist.

If it is a filter scarf I would say that you will still receive the +1 to saves while drinking. A Wonderstell said you can hold your breath while drinking.

If it is a scarf that contains some alchemical items that filter the air, I would say the same. As long as you can hold your breath for the needed length of time and the magical mist require you to breathe it to bee affected, not breathing it for a few seconds is easily feasible.

if it is something different, you should look at how the scarf works.

I'm sorry that I didn't include more details.

The mist is the magical mist from the Mists of Mwangi Pathfinder Society scenario.

The scarves are just normal scarves.

They don't have time to go find special items.

Drinking will cause exposure.

Hell, getting exposed is half the fun of that scenario.
