Spell Amps and Polymorph Forms

Rules Questions

So, Spell Amps specify that you make all decisions about the spell's effect when you use it as though you were casting it yourself, rather than that they're made at time of creation. With that in mind, when you use a Spell Amp with Polymorph in it, what are you options for Polymorph forms? It would be pretty strange if putting that spell in an Amp made it possible to design forms on the fly...

I would assume that decisions are made at the time of item creation.

Identifying the item tells you what specific and singular form is contained in the spell gem/ampoule.

Edit: that said, spell amps specifically say you get to make any decisions related to the spell as if you were the caster of that spell.

So, you get the exact forms the original crafter of that spell amp had access to, to choose from.

That certainly makes sense, though it still makes buying Polymorph amps on the open market pretty complicated.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For Summon Monster, when you buy a Spell Gem, you get the 4 elementals by default. It's something they forgot about Polymorph, but your DM can come up with similar "basic forms" you'll find on all Spell Amps.

Right, but the rule on this differs for Spell Gems - in that there's no rule around specifying decisions at time of creation.

Which creatures are available isn't a decision made at creation, though. That's a decision made when the caste learns the spell. Which creature is actually summoned is the decision made when you cast it.

Having polymorph work similarly makes sense.

Which is an extremely easy thing when a player makes a Spell Amp. When a player buys a Spell Amp, that's a bit different.

The Polymorph rules overall really needed a sidebar about Spell Gems and Spell Amps.

True, but it would have to be far more complex compared to the one for summon.

As a GM I might just let a player choose what the forms are, as long as they design them in advance and aren't buying too many.
Alternatively, I might make some standard forms for whatever location they're in.

Sounds like something of a problem if they player is buying the Spell Amp mid-game.

Like, there's ways to handle this, but it definitely seems like a gap in the rules.

Nothing new there. In Pathfinder, no one really knew what kind of undead could be animated with an animate undead scroll, because there was no telling how much material component was put into the scroll upon it's creation.

A simple solution was to assume that the person using the scroll had to provide the component in cases where the spell had a variable component, but the rules never technically allowed for it, which definitely seemed like a gap in the rules.

I sometimes think Paizo deliberately doesn't bother with such minutiae, instead leaving it to the GMs to figure out.
