Some questions on Mavaro (OA2 version)

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I recently gotten the OA2 class deck, and playing with Mavaro. Got some questions regarding his powers.

A. Play with the top card of your deck face up. You gain all skills that could be used to acquire that card equal to your Knowledge skill.
B. You may discard ([X] or recharge) a card to search your deck for a card and set it aside; shuffle your deck, then put that card on top.

1. What happens when I play a card that says examine my top card or my deck? I assume this includes the top card which is already open? In other words, even though the top card is open, it is still treated in all other regards as part of my deck?

2. Power B says to recharge a card, then shuffle the deck. So that means the recharged card is also shuffled, i.e. won't be at the bottom?

3. We can use our powers anytime within a turn, right? So just before resetting my hand, can I use power B to get a card I want to the top? Then when I reset, it comes into my hand.

4. Can I use the powers repeatedly to address different parts of a card? For example, the following is the Fan of Flames card.

On your combat check against a bane, discard this card to add 1d6 and the Fire trait...
After playing this card, if you do not have the Arcane skill, banish it; otherwise, you may succeed at an Arcane 7 or Fortitude 5 check to recharge this card instead of discarding it.

So let's say when I'm encountering a monster, I reveal a weapon and use power B to bring a card that grants me the Melee skill (power A). I also plat the Fan of Flames to add a 1d6. After that, then I use power B again to grant me the Arcane skill, to attempt to recharge the spell instead of banishing it. Is this play ok?

1. Face-up cards are expressly excluded from examines since MM (they ARE still treated as part of your deck, or a location deck, etc. and count as the TOP card for other purposes, but if you get to examine - you examine the next face-down card)

2. Yes. (There's a pretty much 1:1 example in the rulebook)

3. Yes, unless a power has instructed you to end your turn (in which case you may not play "in-between" powers - you can and have to ONLY reset your hand and end your turn)

4. No. You can only use each power or a card type ONCE per step or check (such as the one you're describing), unless the power happens when something else happens, in which case you (can) use it every time that thing happens (many such powers begin with "When...", but they could be as simple as "Reduce damage dealt to you by 1"). Mavaro's power is NOT such power.

Thanks, that makes sense. As a follow-up question, there are often monsters where, before you can encounter them, you have to pass some other skill check first or take X damage. Can I take it that for such cases, Mavaro can use his power first for that skill check, then later again for the combat check? Because while it is the same card, those are separate checks. Whereas in the spell example I had, the line "After playing this card, if you do not have the Arcane skill, banish it..." was still part of the first check? (In other words, the card is banished before Mavaro has opportunity to use his power again for the second check.)

(Bringing in rulebook quotes for all of Longshot's statements, and refuting his answer to questions 3 and 4 because they're not entirely correct)

1. You ignore faceup cards when examining.

MM rulebook, p14 wrote:
If there are any faceup cards on the deck, ignore them when determining which cards you are examining.

2. The recharged card is shuffled in.

MM rulebook, p8 wrote:
Always perform the first action required by a power before performing any other action. For example, if a card says “Recharge this card to recharge a card from your discard pile,” recharge the card you’re playing before recharging the card from your discard pile.

3. There are many points in a turn where you cannot use powers freely. You can use his power whenever you want between steps of a turn. During a step of a turn, you can only use the power if the step explicitly allows you to use powers, and using that power directly affects the situation at hand. The specific example you gave is allowed, but a case that would not be allowed would be a hypothetical start of turn effect "At the start of your turn, bury a random card from your hand." -- you cannot use Mavaro's power B to discard/recharge a card before that start of turn effect is resolved in order to keep that card "safe."

4. As Longshot stated, you can only use a character power once per check or step of an encounter. However, the recharge check for Fan of Flames is a separate check from the original check (and also a separate step of the encounter, it takes place during "Attempt the next check, if needed"). As such, you can use Mavaro's powers once each for the original check and once each again for the recharge check.

Yeah, my bad, I got my wires crossed on that one and was just coming to correct myself. So, that's a YES to both the original and the follow-up question.

Ah thanks. You guys are fantastic!
