Today is World Penguin Day.
On this day we don tuxedos and offer up herring to placate the World Penguin. As the ancient prophecies warn, unless yearly fed, the World Penguin will rise from Antarctic ice and waddle across the lands of humanity, crushing all in its path (but really adorably).
You know.
Ragnasquok.

Recent example. Creature is a twisted mass of plant matter formed into the shape of a skeletal wyrm. What should this creature be called?
Branch of Blood, Root of Bone?
or
Dracolichen?
Because it's about tone.
Dracolichen is a great name and even a pretty funny pun. But it's completely out of place in a serious encounter where the PCs are having to face a literal manifestation of national and heritage pride twisted to otherworldly conquest.
When we write a fey plot, though, I totally want to use Dracolichen as a monster name. It's both very fitting there and too good to not use eventually.

I honestly can't decide. I'm honestly torn between Root of Bone and Dracolichen.

Yep. Irreverent whimsy is really fitting for the tone of a fey storyline, and doesn't detract from the overall effect; in fact, the very dissonance can enhance the oddity and unnatural sense of the story.
Not so much in the plot in question, involving a lost royal scion having fallen into the Far Realm and now returning to her former home on the Prime with intent to reunite and reunify, by force if necessary, and make her old and new kingdoms one.
The alienness of the invaders contrasted with their apparent loyalty to the kingdom the PCs are defending from them and the twisting of that loyalty into intent to conquer and corrupt by the Far is the primary theme of the plot, and silly puns don't mesh as well with this particular storyline idea or tone.

Counterpoint. Yes, it's about tone. After a point, making a name like that honestly sounds borderline pretentious...and is hard to remember. I'm still not sure I actually got the name you used right. One of those three-word phrases is fine. Two reads to me as trying way too hard to have meaningful impact.
The short pun names aren't always about lol puns. It's a quick, easy-to-remember name that gets across the essence of the creature.

That's beautiful. Played in DC Heroes game where one of the players had a character named Lichenthrope. He could turn into fungi based creatures. It was pretty useless except for the jokes.

You actually got it spot on, heh.
As usual we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't have Any trouble remembering this sort of thing. As for pretentious... Well yeah. Its supposed to be.
It's the Far-warped minds and souls of a bunch of military brats infusing the local landscape's flora and buried remains of fauna into a totem evocative of the primary emblem of their homeland and direct representation of their patriotism and pride in their heritage, bloodline, and military service, animated in rage at these lowlife adventurers for standing in the way of their return home and reunion and absorption of their former people.
If it's not pretentious, I'm doing it wrong.

They told me that College was where you went to decide what you want to be when you grow up.
I am now 53, and am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.
Of course, I am still waiting to grow up too, so no rush I guess.
;)
Some comedian years ago used to have a joke that adults always ask kids what they want to be when they grow up, because they (the adults) were looking for ideas.

Who's getting married? Did I miss a post somewhere?

Yes. And to her credit, she immediately Googled whether or not either of these pets would be possible to own and was disappointed but accepting to discover that sea turtles are explicitly illegal to own.

There was no post, heh. We never have made a big deal about it.
But yeah, Scint and I have been engaged for about a year now. The only thing keeping it at engagement rather than marriage is me trying to get the funds to pay off the last of my remaining debts and to move from Tennessee to Kansas.

Tennessee has REALLY gone downhill in the past decade, mostly d-[REDACTED FOR POLITICS].
I see it as a lateral move due to [REDACTED] and a downgrade in scenery.

I don't go outside enough for scenery to matter.
And if you consider Kansas and TN's politics lateral, I'm just going to say you haven't been to this part of TN in a LONG time.
Yes, it has gotten that much worse.
