I on the other hand am fairly bad at it. I tend to not see them coming, set her up for them completely unintentionally and unaware, and admittedly get kinda groany when she inevitably fires them at me.

Today is World Penguin Day.
On this day we don tuxedos and offer up herring to placate the World Penguin. As the ancient prophecies warn, unless yearly fed, the World Penguin will rise from Antarctic ice and waddle across the lands of humanity, crushing all in its path (but really adorably).

But I'll fully admit, to some degree we're like a venn diagram toward each other, where my circle is labeled "awesome" or "badass" and hers is labeled "funny" and there's that tiny section in the middle where we overlap. I go immediately for stuff that sounds evocative, memorable in an epic sense, or references stuff (books, songs, etc.) that I really enjoy. She on the other hand seems to go straight for puns and corny jokes, getting a laugh, and being memorable for being silly or ironic.Or, put another way, I like pithy, and you like purple.
Recent example. Creature is a twisted mass of plant matter formed into the shape of a skeletal wyrm. What should this creature be called?

Because it's about tone.
Dracolichen is a great name and even a pretty funny pun. But it's completely out of place in a serious encounter where the PCs are having to face a literal manifestation of national and heritage pride twisted to otherworldly conquest.
When we write a fey plot, though, I totally want to use Dracolichen as a monster name. It's both very fitting there and too good to not use eventually.
Fey are pretty good for blurring the line between silly and scary.

I honestly can't decide. I'm honestly torn between Root of Bone and Dracolichen.

Yep. Irreverent whimsy is really fitting for the tone of a fey storyline, and doesn't detract from the overall effect; in fact, the very dissonance can enhance the oddity and unnatural sense of the story.
Not so much in the plot in question, involving a lost royal scion having fallen into the Far Realm and now returning to her former home on the Prime with intent to reunite and reunify, by force if necessary, and make her old and new kingdoms one.
The alienness of the invaders contrasted with their apparent loyalty to the kingdom the PCs are defending from them and the twisting of that loyalty into intent to conquer and corrupt by the Far is the primary theme of the plot, and silly puns don't mesh as well with this particular storyline idea or tone.

The short pun names aren't always about lol puns. It's a quick, easy-to-remember name that gets across the essence of the creature.

That's beautiful. Played in DC Heroes game where one of the players had a character named Lichenthrope. He could turn into fungi based creatures. It was pretty useless except for the jokes.

It's the Far-warped minds and souls of a bunch of military brats infusing the local landscape's flora and buried remains of fauna into a totem evocative of the primary emblem of their homeland and direct representation of their patriotism and pride in their heritage, bloodline, and military service, animated in rage at these lowlife adventurers for standing in the way of their return home and reunion and absorption of their former people.

They told me that College was where you went to decide what you want to be when you grow up.
I am now 53, and am still trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up.
Of course, I am still waiting to grow up too, so no rush I guess.
