Should there be Prosthetic eyes?

General Discussion

I realized when I read up on the "wound" crit effect for weapons, that its perfectly possible that a PC could loose an arm or leg and need a prosthetic one, which explains the existence of the prosthetic arm and leg augmentations, as they're a way around being down an arm or a leg from a bad crit; and regeneration doesn't come into play still high levels.

Thing is, player characters can also loose an eye as well, and as improbable as it may sound, there's every chance they'll loose all their eyes and become blind. Which depending on their build, may make them unable to effectively fight in combat.

So this leads to the obvious question: If a player character is unlucky enough to loose both their eyes (assuming they started with two), should they be able to get around the resulting blindness with a prosthetic eye?

More to the point, how much should it cost, and at what item level?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Wide-Spectrum Ocular Implants. Replaces the eyes completely, level 5 item, 2,825 credits.

"These cybernetic spheres replace your eyes entirely. You gain low-light vision, as well as the ability to see infrared and ultraviolet light. These enhancements grant you a +2 bonus to vision-based Perception checks and allow you to notice some things people who can see only the red-violet light spectrum can’t, including the lasers from darkvision capacitors. This doesn’t grant you darkvision, but in darkness you can see significant sources of heat due to your infrared vision."

Also, Darkvision Capacitors. Starting at level 3, 1,750 credits.

"These replacement eyes allow you to see in total darkness, giving you darkvision with a range of 60 feet. They operate by sending out low-powered ultraviolet lasers that are then detected by receptors within the capacitors. When your capacitors are in operation, their lasers can be detected by creatures that have darkvision capacitors or can otherwise see ultraviolet light.

Advanced darkvision capacitors have the benefits of a wide-spectrum ocular implant. Long-range darkvision capacitors function like advanced capacitors but provide a darkvision range of 120 feet."

I believe that Thursty and Owen ruled that, for Starfinder Society, you could get essentially any destroyed organ replaced for the same cost as an arm or leg prosthetic, i.e. 100 credits, or 110 credits for a biotech version with Adaptive Biochains. The replacement has no other capability other than to replace the workings of your natural organ... so a replaced eye would only have darkvision if you had darkvision naturally. It also counts as your augmentation for that slot, so there is an incentive to upgrade or shell out for a regeneration spell or table.
