I know a lot of people are worked up about how hunt target is not the same kind of effect that favored enemy was and how now the ranger is less of the reckless sledge hammer against its enemies and has to be a lot more cautious to be as effective. I don't have a problem with this on a purely conceptual basis, but on a practical level the ranger design does seemed like it has been pushed into the lone, cautious jungle-fighting Rambo, and away from kick in the door to the roof and shoot down the helicopter Rambo.

The reason I see this as developing into a problem is that it kind of mimics why the rogue is always the first to die in PF1. Snares and sneaking and caution can be a lot of fun to play, but not if the entire party is not built to support it. And the problem right now is that it is pretty difficult to have a party of 4 characters that do completely support that party.

The way it looks to me, a lot of PF1 rangers are now archery fighters and I look forward to trying that build in a playtest, but the ranger is looking like a class that is only going to be fun to pick in situations where the party plans out their builds in advance and is willing to commit to the stealth assassin team.

I am struggling to figure out why you would build a two weapon fighting ranger instead of a fighter so if it seems obvious to you, please let me know.

I actually like the new Hunt Target class feature. It is reminiscent of the slayer's Studied Target, which is one of my favorite class features. I don't feel like it forces you to commit stealth assassinations (my Slayer uses her Studied Target every time, and has been involved in more head-on battles than stealth attacks), or to not be the "kick in the door to the roof and shoot down the helicopter Rambo" (again, taking my Slayer as an exemple, she is primarily a scythe-wielding warrior who charges into battle and do Power Attacks). Hunt Target does not state that you have to be stealthy or cautious. You want to be a bruttish half-orc wielding a giant battleaxe ? Sure, you can. And you still get 3 out of 4 benefits from your hunt target (the only benefit you don't get is the ranged attack penalty removal).

(Edit : I always found Favored ennemy to be too situational for a PC, and too powerful for an NPC)

As for the two wepon fighting ranger, yeah, if you want to only focus on two weapon fighting, you're better off playing a fighter. You would play the ranger if you want the ranger's other feats and class features (Hunt Target, animal companion, Monster Hunter, Camouflage, more skills...) that can't be taken by the fighter.

If Hunt Target was a flat bonus to attack, I would agree with you, but if you are moving in to combat, and turning it on on your first round, you are not benefiting from it until your second.
Which means that the ranger that did sneak up and turn it on before combat is much better off than the one that kicked in the door.
