1st level starting equipment for an operative

I'm just starting out with Starfinder. There's plenty of advice for new players and necessary equipment in Pathfider society, but not Starfinder.

What indispensable items would you recommend for a new 1st level operative?
Not so much talking weapons or armor, as at 1000CR there's pretty limited choices, but everything else. Should I buy food? Is clothing included or do I need to buy everyday wear? Etc...

Buy clothing. Actually all of my characters spent the extra money to combine two sets into one. My –701 owns Travel/Cold, Travel/Hot, and ZeroGrav/Everyday. My –702 always wears Professional Clothing.

You don't need to buy clothing. Naked seems socially acceptable, and armor covers you well enough. But clothing provides useful skill bonuses.

My Operative honestly hasn't purchased much. I'm hoarding credits for a big purchase down the line. She still uses Level 1 weapons because her Trick Attack Damage scales with purchasing something better. Her skills are off the chart so she doesn't need skill-boosting items. And she's mobile so hasn't needed the best armor.

Operatives seem very self sufficient with little gear.

tool kits: engineering, hacking, navigator's, profession, trapsmith
fire extinguisher
serum of healing mk 1
1 day of rations
flashlight and gear clamp to hold it hands-free
Professional clothes add +1 to day job check if you have a profession.

But be mindful of Bulk.

My Halfling Operative went to a x2 gravity planet and hated life.

Or do what I did and spend 400 creds on replacement prosthetic limbs for my arms and legs for background reasons and then wonder where all my money went.

@Nefreet, where is the option to combine two sets of clothing? Did not see that under clothing itself or personal items. I definitely would like to do that, being ysoki bulk is a big deal to me.

It's in the description of Environmental clothing: "The benefit of an environmental outfit can be added to another type of clothing (including a different environmental outfit) by doubling and adding together the price of both types of clothing."

It seems like a good idea, especially if you're concerned about bulk and don't want to haul half a dozen different sets of clothes. By doubling and adding, does it mean a combined travel/environmental set would be 20 + 20 = 40 credits? If credits are tight at character creation you might not need to get that right away; with a couple missions under your belt that becomes affordable.

I’m glad you started this thread, HabeneroHN - I was looking for an “Items that can save you in Starfinder Society” thread, but maybe that needs to wait for the Armory coming out next month.
