@Nefreet, where is the option to combine two sets of clothing? Did not see that under clothing itself or personal items. I definitely would like to do that, being ysoki bulk is a big deal to me.

Grand Lodge

I'm just starting out with Starfinder. There's plenty of advice for new players and necessary equipment in Pathfider society, but not Starfinder.

What indispensable items would you recommend for a new 1st level operative?
Not so much talking weapons or armor, as at 1000CR there's pretty limited choices, but everything else. Should I buy food? Is clothing included or do I need to buy everyday wear? Etc...

Since the untimely demise of my last character I'm looking for an alternate. I love martials and even more unarmed combatants.

So what determines ultimate?

It's not just the ability to kick butt (although that's fun) I'm looking for something that is useful to a party outside the butt kicking times. I don't like the "Snorbag want punch bad guys, wake Snorbag when fighting starts" characters that martials seem to have become.

So what suggestions can any of you make for a new character that has the potential to have useful abilities to out of combat, fights unarmed, and is PFS legal?

I have or can get access to any and all books necessary.

Cons are a real crapshoot. Great chance to get a bunch of games in a short time, great chance to meet a killer GM out to get a few more ticks on their TPK card. It's a tough call if you cannot play often and losing a character can represent 6 to 12 months of play time loss due to a situation similar to yours. At low levels the dice often rule the game.

If you have the option, making Con only character is a good idea. That way you are prepared for the risk.

In celtic mythology there was a magic spear that could be used to automatically hit and kill any being from god to man. It could not be blocked or avoided in any way. (You also had to throw it with your foot while standing in water - celtic mythology is weird)
The downside? The very next time the weapon was used by anyone it slew the person its previous wielder most loved. So let your massive power be know and also let it be known that their is a powerful curse for using it. After using it then the party would have to protect the weapon and keep anyone else from ever using it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Looks like the general consensus is Mutagenic Mauler Brawler so meet:

Roary Acobhran Finnen O'Brogan

Brawler 1 (Mutagenic Mauler)
Human (Taldan)
Member of the Sovereign Court
Chaotic Neutral
AC 16 (18 when mutated) HP 17
STR 19
Dex 14
Con 16
Int 8
Wis 8
CHA 7

Mutagen: +2 Natural Armor and choose one for 10 minutes per day: +4 STR/-2INT, +4DEX/-2WIS, +4CON/-2CHA
Skills: Acrobatics 6, Knowledge (Local) 3, Perception 3, swim 8
Traits: Unflappable, Indomitable Faith
Feats: Simple Weapons, Close weapons, Light armor, Improved Unarmed Strike, Toughness, Weapon Focus (Unarmed)

Roary is a typical example of the slumming son of a noble lord, or he would be if the O'Brogan family had any claim to even the slightest bit of noble blood. He wears shabby versions of noble clothing and frequents taverns where he loudly toasts to Cayden Cailean, loudly sings baudy songs, rarely starts fights but always finishes them. He's never lost a fight, or so he claims. After all, if you run away that just means your biding your time for a rematch so it doesn't count. A hard gregarious drinker, Roary represents many of the positive aspects of Cayden Caileans worshipers. He may jest at your expense but rarely means it and is likely to pick an defeated enemy up off the floor, dust them off and offer them a drink while regaling them with tales of tavern brawls. His favorite drunken boast is about how he will follow in the footsteps of Cayden Cailean and take the test of the star stone once he's done with all this pathfinder tomfoolery. Then the O'Brogans will be the direct descendants of a god, better than any so called noble blood.
When Roary drinks his mutagenic elixir the darker side comes out of him and all his worse personality traits accentuate. Gregariousness becomes arrogance, rough and tumble tavern brawler becomes a callous bully, good natured jests turn to cruel insults. He'll step on a defeated enemies throat and chuckle as they struggle. After the mutagen wears off Roarys memories can be hazy, so far he has written off concerned companions depictions of his behavior under its influence.
That's only 10 minutes a day at the moment, but much like Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde, Roary is developing a taste for the power he feels while mutated.

I rarely get to play so leveling up multiple characters is just not an option. After the death of my only leveled character at Gen Con I need to make a replacement. (Seriously, attacking brand new players while they are down? Bad GM, tsk tsk. Waggle finger menacingly)

I'm torn between a Mutagenic Mauler Brawler or a Magus. Both have interesting characteristics, look fun to play, and can be effective.

So I ask you, if you were going to play with a random throw together party, who would you rather party with? A Magus or a Brawler? Who contributes more to a balanced party. Which would make you groan and wish there was somebody else to sub in.

Grand Lodge

I don't mean do you get age modifiers, but personally do you age your characters a year for every time a season changes.

Or do your characters stay young forever.

(Not a rule specific question but I'm asking if people purposefully age their characters to represent the passing of in game time?)

You could also dip Alchemist to get a mutagen and Enlarge Person. Not sure if you consider that a "spellcaster".

This may be exactly what I am looking for, as it's a "Dr. Jeykyll and Mr. Hyde" type of character I am envisioning.

So I have a pair of minis that would work great as a brawler and his enlarged person version.
What are my options, in Pathfinder society, to be able to cast this on himself?

Use Magical Device and a wand?
Potions

What other options exist?

Grand Lodge

Excellent, thanks. I'll have to add Archives of Nethys to my favorites.

Grand Lodge

trying to find out what sourcebook Nightstall Urchin regional trait is from so i can see if it's on the list of additional resources and legal for PFS play. Anyone know what I'd need to buy for that one?

Grand Lodge

I'd like to say thanks to all the GMs who volunteered their time, they made this event work.

Highlights: Every leveled character I had dying a permanent death (which sounds scary but I only had one, I could gripe about getting a GM who was collecting TPks at the con-quite proud that he had two the first day-one being my party and was hoping to "score some more") but other than that it was a blast.

Made some new friends and got to see some very interesting characters.

Grand Lodge

Although this is not my first Gen Con, it will be my first as a member of the Pathfinder Society.
Other than two miniature war games that I am running, my whole con will be Pathfinder society.
I'm hoping to have a great deal of fun with some great people, and maybe get a level or two if I don't get killed off.

Bringing 5 characters so I will have to die every session before having to use a pre-gen.

Grand Lodge

Aspis or Sczarni would happily do the deed and set everything up to point at the other group. Frame your rival then move in to "protect" the remaining populace, with appropriate charges of course.

Used to be that your INT score x10 was your IQ. So INT 5, 50 IQ. Forrest Gump was 70, just for comparison.

If they want to make a fortune for some lucky charity, they should put one (and only one) goblin racial boon up for bids.

Grand Lodge

So when I joined PFS some months ago I made one character and played him. Now I have 4, 3 more in progress and every time I make a new character the very act of it sets me up with 3 new ideas for more.

I could play every day and still not play all these PC ideas.

How do you deal with having more characters than you can potentially play?

Grand Lodge

I thought buoyant balloons could only lift 20lbs, that doesn't seem to be enough to get a skinny halfling out of trouble much less a typical armored adventurer.

Grand Lodge

Smoked Goggles.
APG p183, Oh man I wish I had these yesterday, we nearly had a TPK from 2 young basilisks.
10 gold for a +8 vs gaze attacks with a 20% miss chance, much better than turning your gaze away (50%). -4 Perception while worn, so I'd keep them off most of the time, but at low levels potentially a real life saver.

Grand Lodge

I have had my first character survive long enough to make 2nd level and am now working on the level up.

I am playing a battle cleric of Gorum and am wanting to take a level of fighter so I can get hvy armor feat (and be properly attired for the god of battle in massive iron plate armor) and weapon focus greatsword. so the question is this, as I have not yet played this character at second level, can I set him up as if he was a fighter at first level and take cleric as the 2nd? I played him up to this point as a cleric. The difference would be a couple hp as the starting amount for fighters is higher.

Also, is this a good idea? I'm intending to stick with cleric for the rest of his career, will a 1 level dip in fighter be crippling to my clerical casting?

What about changing race? I found a mini that looks more Kellid than Shoanti (has hair) so can I change my ethnicity before playing level 2

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Society often seems about economy of resources. In my short time here I have seed many posts on "How should I spend my money" and "How should I spend my prestige."

So the question I have is what have you bought that does not give you a character advantage other than RP? Patron of the arts and buy a painting? Did you spend extra to have your life story engraved on your armor? Start an animal sanctuary or just hire an executive chef. I'm curious.

Myself, I am planning the life story on the armor thing. I'm thinking to spend double the Masterworking cost with no effect other than aesthetics.

Yes John, it was the Santa Clara group. Too bad about the larger side room being closed, and I definitely should have communicated better about my time commitments and hearing issues.
In the long term I think time is going to be an issue as I work at 11PM on Monday nights normally, just not for the next two weeks.

I did sign up for another event on the 23rd and am looking forward to it. Thank you all for being so welcoming.

Grand Lodge

I'm going to give them another try next week and be a bit more vocal about my needs. I don't have to work that night so I can stay as long as needed. I'd hate to write a group off from one mediocre experience without at least trying to address the issues.

Grand Lodge

It was OK.
The people were nice, accepting and helpful of the newbie.
The venue had 40 people in a small room (the store has a huge unused room right next to the small one and it's loaded with tables I am not sure why nobody used it all night) and in short order you had to shout to be heard and I missed almost all the module because I'm a bit hard of hearing.
I also had to leave before it was finished. I had thought that since my job does not start until an hour after the event is supposed to end I'd be OK, but found out when I got there that the events rarely end just an hour late and usually are multiple hours late.

So overall it was fun, but I'm not sure I'll be going back to that venue again.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Found a local PFS group, attending my first session as a player tonight (have not role-played in 8 years) wish me luck.
Hope you're all as awesome as you seem...

So I am going to try out the pathfinder game and pathfinder society for the first time at Gen Con this year.
I played 3.5, own pathfinder, have read the rules, but it's been years since I RP'd at all. Figured why not wrap myself in bacon if I am going to be thrown to the wolves and signed up for 4 society events.
I want to be prepared so I have made a character that will hopefully be useful in multiple situations and fun to play. I'm trying out cleric archer which I have never done before. Going for hang back, support, snipe.

Human (Osirion) Cleric 1st of Erastil
STR 12
DEX 17
CON 10
INT 12
WIS 15
CHA 12

1 skill point in Diplomacy, heal, knowledge (religion), Perception, and profession (brewing)

Traits: Secrets of the Sphinx (engineering is now a class skill), Patient optimist

Languages: Common, Osiriani, Kelish

Domains: Good, Community: Calming touch, Touch of good

Feats: Point blank shot, precise shot

Spells: Bless, Shield of faith, Divine favor

Not sure what to take for Orisons

Have not yet bought equipment.

Since it's possible I could level if I survive all the games, I intend to pre-level the character and have that ready.

The basic concept is a Priest of Erasil who is traveling the world in order to help revive the past glories of Osirion, but more importantly, to learn brewing tricks from other nations and bring that back to Osirion. After all, as the cradle of civilization they were the birthplace of beer.

So I am looking for comments, tweaks, "good, bad, ugly" to make sure this is a viable character that can contribute to the party in most situations.
