Today provided me with a couple of nice gifts, one being the fact that someone's offloaded their jazz CD collection to a local charity shop/thrift store, which means I got five very decent albums for £1, and the other being a bag full of ex-Halloween pumpkins my wife told me to put in the compost. I did, but not before doing a spot of test cutting in the back garden with one of my live blades. I haven't had the chance to do that for ages.

Friday! Thank God it's Friiiday! (singing horrible disco theme song to a horrible disco movie).
I have the GM buzz starting to sound softly in my brain and for the first time I'm seriously considering using, or at least mostly so, the Midgard Campaign Setting from Kobold and Open Design Publishing. If you've never looked it over, it's fantastic, focusing on Slavic and Scandinavian settings with appropriately themed beasties. The setting also expands outward to include The Southlands, a realm of eldritch magic, and more. I'm focusing on the Slavic aspect of it and have been digging around my huge number of gaming .pdfs and such, gathering any pertinent material I can. I might never run this campaign regularly, or any campaign regularly again, but it does feel good to finally have that little imp on my shoulder whispering ("you need more traps and fey") again.
What's everyone else doing this weekend?

Holding my wife's 50th birthday party this weekend! A nice-yet-casual restaurant and then over to a bar with a 2nd story patio for drinks afterward. 12 people were invited!
I hate planning social events!!! Even easy ones like this!! But I'm doing it for my wife!
She'll love ya for it!

I’ve got two things planned, first I’ll be setting up a discord server to run a campaign where most of the mechanics are kept hidden, both to help players focus on the world (since I don’t want “playing the mechanics”) and also because I’m testing out various mechanics and this way I need less buy in from players and less explanation about them. They are supposed to be simulationist anyway.
The second thing is that I will be working on programming a game, a sort of mix between minecraft and dnd. This first iteration is mostly just a simulation sandbox so I can test out my AI designs and such, but it lays the groundwork for building and playing your own character. The end goal will eventually be a mix of minecraft, dnd, and breath of the wild, where the terrain is alterable, you can climb and glide and fly, use skills, cast spells, etc.
The sandbox simulation part will be using the 3.5 ogl as I saw a paper once where someone supposedly ran a simulation to see how common various levels of magic items and spells would actually be, but I think I can do better.

Yes, the aim being to make it as chaotic as possible.
The players also want to rob (or take over) the local bank, but I've already determined several ways in which this can go catastrophically wrong. No doubt they'll try to set it on fire - that always happens, so I've used that as my starting-off point.

How did the bank robbery go?
I'm posting my Friday thing tonight because tomorrow will be a long, difficult day. My ex is having to say goodbye to her beloved Rigby Dog tomorrow. She found out only a month ago that he has bone cancer and it's rapidly progressed to the point the femur in his left leg is basically disintegrating. She learned on Monday he has a week left at most, so rather than take the chance on it breaking and him suffering before she can get him to the vet that tomorrow will be the day she says goodbye. She's in terrible shape right now so I'll be with her a lot tomorrow and might forget to ask...
HEY, EVERYONE! WHAT'S GOING ON THIS WEEKEND?!?!
Andostre |
My condolences to everyone who loved good boy Rigby. I hope his passing went smoothly.
This morning I ran a 5K with my daughter for her girl's running group. My knees hurt a little bit less than they did last season!
The rest of the weekend is gearing up for Thanksgiving. My sister hosts the four of us and my mom, as is our tradition. What's more, the kids are staying with her for a couple days before Thanksgiving, so that's a nice treat for me and my wife.

Thank you. His crossing over to STo'Vo'Kor went smoothly. He will now fetch glory for his House for all time to come. Qapla'!
Sounds like you guys had a good time! We'll go to my ex-wife's brother's house for Thanksgiving like always. As time goes on, I feel less and less comfortable around him. I'm pretty darned good at reading the signals people give off and it's more and more clear I'm not really welcome there anymore, despite the fact my ex and I get along probably better than we did when married. He's a Red Hat person and so is his gf and her daughters while my ex, my son, and his gf are NOT. This will be an interesting dinner this year!!!
The bank robbery thing was for Limeylongears post above mine, as a band robbery was being planned for his recent game. Sorry for the confusion!

My close circle of friends is mostly conservative, except for the elder sister of the main family, who is constantly telling us "no politics" at the slightest hint of anything on that subject. <shrug>

They opted not to rob the bank, being more interested in treating their hangovers and taking part in the Gremlin race.
Hope the trip to the vet went alright, or as well as it could under the circumstances.

Turkey day will be moved to next Saturday here because anything sooner is a pain for our schedules and anything later is getting dangerously close to Christmas.
Christmas looms ominously and joyously on the holiday horizon.
You're in....Norway, right? Is Thanksgiving widely celebrated there?
DungeonmasterCal |

No. The only thing related to that holiday we've imported is Black Friday (Black Week, rather, because why the hell not?), but my mother is American and Thanksgiving has a lot of good food we like.
The silly thing is we can make any of that food any time we want, but somehow saving it up for the holiday seems to make it special.

If you had that sort of meal all the time it wouldn't be special. Same with Christmas food here.

I need to know more lol

Short version, Christmas dinner is very traditional in Norway, with only a few dishes being common. As the video points out, pinnekjøtt* and ribbe** are by far the most common, and who eats what depends greatly on where in the country you are or where your parents/grandparents grew up. The regional differences are primarily what sort of meat was most common in the area back in the days before modern just in time logistics and easy cargo transportation. In the Oslo and central Norway region ribbe is most common. Pinnekjøtt is more common in western Norway. Various fish dishes are common in coastal areas that relied heavily on fis. Lutefisk is fairly rare but extant, and some have Christmas cod.
My paternal grandfather was from the west so Christmas eve is pinnekjøtt. My paternal grandmother was from the north so we have reindeer on Christmas day and halibut on the 26th.
Since my mother and sister are not particularly fond of pinnekjøtt we also cook medister (suet) sausages for the 24th.
Most of my girlfriend's family is from the Oslo area so they have ribbe, though they have taken to the heretical practice of having both ribbe and pinnekjøtt in recent years.
*Pinnekjøtt, literally "stick meat", is dried, smoked and salted mutton ribs. Soaked for a day then steamed with birch sticks (hence the name). Traditionally served with potatoes and surkål (lit. 'sour cababge' - cabbage cooked in vinegar and caraway).
**Ribbe is pork belly roasted with scored hide to get crackling.

I've never had smoked OR deep friend turkey. We do ours a little differently than most, but it's still cooked in the oven the way The Good Lord intended lol. My son is in charge of the turkey and has been for several years now. He prepares it to put into the oven using a spatchcock method and it's always delicious (and cooks faster!).

I've loved pinnekjøtt ever since I moved on to solid foods and could suck on a bone. When my grandfather and uncle kept sheep they made their own, which was always superior to the store bought stuff.
These days my family mostly gets packs of turkey breast in the store rather than a whole turkey. Far easier, especially when my we don't eat as much as we used to, but I do miss the drumsticks and the turkey soup Mom made of the leftovers

I hope everyone has had a great week. I capped mine off by falling today and skinning my left shin severely and bonking my head off on a concrete step.
What's everyone doing this weekend? No plans here. My GM has no immediate plans to resume our campaign (which I fully expected to happen) so I'm not sure what my gaming future looks like. I'm feeling creative again and while I don't know that I'll ever run a campaign again it just feels good to have the process of creation going again. I'm not rushing to complete anything, just putting down ideas as they occur to me, and I'm really enjoying it.

Hardcore. (I hope you heal up quickly.)

What happened?
We finished our Delta Green game last weekend. Three of the five of us reached our breaking point and had some sort of negative effect. For my character's event, the GM rolled that I flew into a violent rage. There were no enemies in range, but one of the PCs was being kind of an asshat. I had a knife thrown by a ghost stuck in my leg (this is what led my guy to reach his breaking point), so I pulled the knife out of my leg, threw it at the PC and screamed "SHUT UP!" The player was stunned, but everyone thought it was very appropriate for the circumstance. Lots of surprised guffaws. Fortunately, the remaining turns of my breaking point effect were spent fending off an undead housecat that appeared.
It was fun! Part of that was because it's been a while since I was able to play an rpg in-person with other people. The GM doesn't plan on continuing with any sort of game for now; it was just an itch he needed to scratch. This is good, I think, because I don't know how much I could commit to a long-term game.
This weekend, my son has a debate tournament (the first of the school year, because the teacher who ran the debate team last year didn't return this year), and my wife and I are touring a high school that he's interested in attending next year.

Mom is visiting this week and next, so we've had some quiet evenings and meals together, while my brother takes her out during the day to see things while I keep an eye on the pup and the house. Sunday is Strange Aeons, then anime night on Monday where we'll continue with Spy x Family.
Next week I'll be back on work, the PTO has really helped me recharge. Mom will get to see me work, so less out and about doing things before she takes off back home. But I don't think it's a bad thing, a pretty good trial run for if she decides she wants to snowbird over the winter in the future.

Getting the MidWinterFest supplies before the mad rush starts, weather permitting.

Starting a campaign and having it just peter out is sort of his trademark. But the presidential election result has him in a deeper funk than mine, I think, and he's contemplating moving to a bluer state or even to Portugal with his gf. He said he's completely unable to focus on anything game-wise.
