Three hours after my initial post on Friday, I suddenly began running a fever. Two hours after that I realized it wasn't Covid but a vicious stomach virus. I didn't sleep until 2 am this morning and am still not over this damned thing. But there weirdest thing is the muscle spasms in my left shoulder and my never-ending knee pain has stopped. I'm certainly glad of that, but if this is the cure? No.

That is weird. I hope you feel better soon.

Reminds me of the joke my dad used to make when I would complain about an inconsequential pain or discomfort, and ask if he should punch my arm. When asked how that would help he’d say that it would stop me from thinking about the other thing that was hurting.

I should note that my father did not believe in corporal punishment so this suggestion (including “oh, if it hurts so bad we should probably cut it off”) were always attempts to lighten the mood and reframe how I was viewing life in the moment

Thanks! I spent all day yesterday cautiously optimistic, but I'm pretty sure it's run its course.

LOL my dad used to say the same types of things. Someone suggested it might be something called Psychoprophylaxis, a condition in which the brain can only process so much pain at one time so it "shuts off" pain signals from one source to process pain from another, which is what the arm punching bit would be an example of. I asked my physical therapist about it yesterday, and she said that is exactly what occurred.

I feel like I need something like they right now to handle my stress. Maybe I’ll call up my brother and see if he wants to punch me in the shoulder.

I know what I'm doing this week and weekend! Packing up so I can move out of the house with my ex-wife and into my new digs the first of the month.

It's absolutely nobody's business but your own, but your posts about your divorce did come as a surprise considering some of the older posts I recall seeing about what you and your wife got up to.

Yes, it was a complete surprise to me as well.

Life is weird is my only explanation.

One minute it seems everything is going great and the next your wife is starting to spout crazy conspiracies about government conspiracies against her and talking about how much she loves god and suddenly files for divorce.

So yup, it's been a very weird winter-spring-summer.

Ah, okay. Sucks that it took you by surprise like it did.

You seem to be making the best of it, though.

...

I'm trying to think of other cliché responses to fill an awkward silence.

Um, chin up!

No plans here this weekend, at least none at present. I usually just let the universe plan my calendar for me anymore, anyway. How about everyone else?

I hate things ended up the way they did, Cap. Good luck going forward, and if nothing else comes of it, I hope she at least gets the help she needs.

My sister's birthday has passed, and we are getting together for a celebration dinner. And then various activities to prepare for the first day of school on Monday.

I have a twisty bit of wood I want to turn into something; beyond that, a bit of exercise, some music, some beer, and a couple of nice sleeps before PF2 on Sunday should do it.

I wish schools here started later in the year than they do. Public schools here in Arkansas started August 14th. It's also damned hot here, and even the school buses that actually have air conditioning (something I wish we'd have had as kids lol) the interiors of the buses can exceed 110 Fahrenheit.

Dinner today to celebrate my SO's grandmother's birthday.
Tomorrow hopefully making some more plum jam.

FRIDAY! Who's doing what this weekend? I'll still be staying at my ex's house to care for her dogs while she's recovering from surgery in the hospital. And even after she comes home someone will have to be there to help her with them for a while.

So who's got big plans?

Strange Aeons once again this Sunday. Hopefully we’ve done enough side quests to earn the trust of our patron.

One of my partner's pals is doing what appears to be a combination DJ set and calligraphy performance at a local (ish) sculpture park. I'm unsure as to how that will work in practice, but we'll see.

Two things: working on my new kineticist's backstory, and reading the new Playtest document more closely. And napping. Lots of napping. :-)

Napping is a beautiful thing, man.

I'm pretty curious about this. Let us know how it turns out.

Moving into my own apartment!

It turns out living with your ex-wife who actively dislikes you isn't as fun as Hollywood says it is so this is a good change I think.

Congrats on the new pad! I guess I'm very lucky that my ex-wife is really my best friend. We were married 30 years, but we lived apart off and on for half of that, mostly due to my depression and anxiety issues. I get really uncomfortable sharing my living space for very long at all (even a few hours with anyone starts to kick my anxiety in gear). We never had an actual fight in all the time we were married, either. Sure, we got angry and irritated with each other, but we worked it out before things escalated.

As someone brighter than me might have expected, there was one bloke DJing (playing Sufi music/Quawwali/Devotional Muslim songs, which aren't something I know much about at all) and another chap doing calligraphy while he played records. It worked well - they were both great at what they did, and the day was beautiful, so I'm glad we went.

I saw the Barbie movie with my wife and daughter today, and I'm seeing Blue Beetle with my son and one of his friends tomorrow. We may see an old friend passing through town if he's not too jet lagged, but if not, he's moving back into the area soon, so no biggie.

Other than that, just a long weekend relaxing after a very hectic week.

That sounds like what my friend did recently. She called me and said she impulse-bought a new house...lol

Ha ha, I'm not that bad.

My wife and I have been talking about replacing the small couch in our bedroom for a while, but I can never tell when she's actually ready to make that sort of decision, and when I try to move forward with that sort of thing, she gets frustrated if she's not ready. So we went into IKEA just to look around... or so I thought.

It turns out, my wife was ready to buy, and she saw a couch she liked, and she confirmed that I liked it, so we ordered it. But since I wasn't expecting it, it felt like an impulse buy. What fun!

Hey, gang! What's going on this weekend? The big news here is my ex if getting to come home today after spending 10 days in the hospital recovering from lung cancer surgery. They had to remove the upper lobe of her right lung, which was a major factor in her having to stay longer than expected. I'll get to sleep in my own bed tonight for the first time since last Monday! Woot!

Tyrant’s Grasp tomorrow morning, followed by Blackstone Fortress on Sunday. I think Monday night will be board gaming, so it’s a packed weekend.

Hope she's doing well considering the circumstances, Cal.

Work tomorrow, trying not to think about the layoffs coming up.

I'd like to be doing that. This week was a lot of early mornings. Cyz met with a new neurologist for a fresh look at her CIDP. Going to have some more tests run to see if/how it has progressed.

This morning was less stressful, stopped by Battle Foam and got the storage box for the Gamblers Chest expansion of Kingdom Death. Still too early for me.

I had today off of work, so the day was spent meeting with my kid's teacher about my kid's ADHD, my wife and I sliding a boxed up IKEA couch up our stairs because the delivery guy couldn't get his hydraulic dolly up our stairs, and then I got a surprise text from a collection agency!

It turns out that I have been billed for lab work done in April, but the lab had an old address, so I only received two of the three invoices they sent out. The third one is addressed to (and was delivered to) my current address, so I have no idea why the first two weren't sent correctly. I called the lab's payment service, and I've hopefully got it sorted out and it won't affect my credit.

I'm also dealing with getting rid of the old couch. I am maintaining a Craigslist ad, a Freecycle.com posting, and a Facebook Marketplace post for this free couch. The weird thing is that I receive so many messages from people asking if the couch is still available, I reply 'Yes,' and then they never respond. It's very weird, and I'm wondering if they're bots or whatever. I think I have one lady who is a real person, doesn't seem like a flake, and will be coming tomorrow afternoon to pick it up.

Saturday night, I'm going to a pub with some neighbors.

My sister haunts FB Marketplace a lot and she said that is an extremely common occurrence.

She tires pretty quickly, but getting the chest tube removed took away some 75% of her pain immediately.

Layoffs SUCK. I hope you make the cut and get to stay on.

I had a go at the very rules-light dungeon crawler One Shot In The Dark this afternoon. Quick and easy to play, whether on your own or with others, but potentially pretty lethal - I had to give up halfway through level three, as two out of four party members had been killed by a combination of Evil Cultists and a carrion crawler.

Wow! Sounds fun, though.

Hi, all!

What's going on this weekend? Mine started last night with my son's 30th birthday dinner and tomorrow is his mom's. In between those two events I have come down with another stomach ailment and this (5:14 pm) is this first time I've felt strong enough to get out of bed for anything except screaming dashes for the bathroom.

So, I don't recommend anyone do that for the weekend, but what are everyone's plans?

Strange Aeons again, we've identified some cult members and gotten a name of their leader. Not sure what we're going to DO with that information, probably nothing good for their healt.

Well, there goes my plans for the weekend.

Not much going on this weekend, which is kinda nice.

Woodraven's brother invited me to join his regular PF group, and it looks like we're playing tomorrow. They needed a spellcaster, so I built an absolutely busted Conjuration wizard. First time I've played in a non-PbP game in years, and my first time playing something other than a fighter or a rogue in even longer. We'll see how this goes...

Watching Cohh play Baldur's Gate 3, mostly, while I wait (another week I think) for the Mac version of the game. Playing around with my new halfling kineticist healer, Harmony Vonn. Rereading Honor Harrington (I'm up to A Rising Thunder so far).

Looks like good weekends all around!

Turns out we weren’t bad for the cultists health (yet) but boy did we find something unhealthy!

Tonight we’ll probably get in a game of Spirit Island. I can only guess at which invader we’ll be repulsing, and what shenanigans they will have in store. Probably Russia again, if the dice have anything to say about it.

Things I now know: summoning a fiendish constrictor snake in the first round of a boss fight is a good way to make the rest of the boss fight very, very boring.
