Starship Free Attacks

Several questions regarding starship free attacks:

1) Do free attacks occur in the helm phase (when they are provoked) or during the gunnery phase after it is provoked?

2) Do free attacks function like PC reactions? (i.e. can a starship make multiple free attacks in a single round of combat?)

Liberty's Edge

Good Questions. This is what the CRB says:

Moving through Other Starship, pg 319 wrote:
This free attack doesn’t benefit from any bonuses or additional abilities from other actions taken aboard the enemy starship, such as divert or lock on. Any character currently in a gunner role can make this attack. If no one is designated as a gunner (often the case in starships with only one crew member), the enemy starship can’t make a free attack. A weapon used for this free attack can still be used as normal later in the round.

I see that I have been doing this wrong. The attack would happen immediately in the Helm phase. I believe this because of the last sentence that says the weapon can "be used again as normal later in the round".

As far as I can tell, there is no Reaction in Starship Combat so if two or more ships move through a hex with other starship, each ship could be attacked as outline above.

Sorry for raising this post from the dead, but my question is related and I thought it'd be better to post here than to start a new topic...

Does this mean the computer cannot be used for free attacks?

The computer bonus is arguably not an "action taken" the way a captain might boost something. If the computer bonus is set for a gunnery bonus that turn, I'd let that stand personally
