Any chance for a Pathfinder Spell Compendium or similar products?

With Pathfinder 2e on the horizon, is there any chance that we could get a book collecting most/all the spells in 1e in one place? The 3.5 Spell Compendium is still one of the books on my most wanted list, and would much prefer a Pathfinder version. Similar products for other parts of the game (such as feats) would be useful as well, and I'm sure that I'm not the only person longing for these to become a reality. A second Ultimate Equipment collecting what has been published in other books since the first came out would also be very welcome.

That'd be pretty cool.

Anyone else out there who wants to see this? Let your voices be heard!
Eric Mona said in his interview with Know Direction last week that the 2019-2020 schedule isn't completely filled in yet. If enough people speak up, maybe we can make it happen!

I have a player that would love to have a hardback Pathfinder Grand Grimoire of PF1E spells.

Honestly, I would buy at least two hardbacks.

It would be a thick, but interesting, project. XD It could also be done by a third-party publisher if they really wanted to, I suppose - if there was enough interest for them, but not quite enough for Paizo.

If it was a “complete” as in all spells ever (and will ever be) printed for PF1 in all formats; then I would be extremely interested in a product like this. Double bonus if it is given a solid editing pass to standardize all the tags and stats, adjust/rebalance problem spells, and provides an index (with summaries) by spell list, sub-indexed by school.

I would spend as much as $120 on a two-volume set that does all of that.

As long as fun spells aren't nerfed into oblivion while horribly broken ones are untouched. Would be a good chance to add older soft cover spells to the hybrid and occult classes.

I'd like to see the core spells avoided though. What UE did was a waste of pages.

I would agree with this. Everything *not* in the CRB.

Also agreed on not having core in it. Would free up a lot of pages for the other stuff.

I don't know, I can think of three reasons to include Core spells off the top of my head:

- Make sure all [keyword] tags that have cropped up over versions are correctly applied to their spells.
- Include any errata that have arisen since the last printing.
- Update the Summon X lists to allow for the additional Bestiary books which have been released since Core.

I'm sure there are other benefits I'm not thinking of, as well.

I would as well. I loved the 3.5 Spell Compendium, it saw a lot of use.

I would also enjoying seeing a Character Option Compendium as well, that could contain all the Feats, Archetypes, traits and drawbacks from all of the 1e content published.

I do use d20pfsrd and various other apps/websites a lot, but what I really want is a physical copy. It would be very useful.

The latest update was that Planar Adventures is the final PF1 hardcover.

There are spells in the CRB that need to be fixed/adjusted.

Spiritual Weapon, for example. It is modified by WIS only, because there were no CHA or INT based casters that could use the spell in the CRB.

A spell compilation is a book I would keep at my right hand during gameplay, especially as a GM. Much faster than tabbing out of my other resourced to look up spells during the middle of a fight.

Doesn't mean we can't lobby to change that.

They plan to keep going with the soft covers as a product line as long as there's demand, once they're done we might get them as an anniversary release.

I started playing around with this Spell Codex idea. Based on the database at www.d20pfsrd.com, there are around 2900 spells, of which around 600 appear in the Core Rulebook. I wrote up some stylesheets in InDesign to format the database, and including all 2900 spells it's going to come to around 550 pages -- just of spells. If we scrap out the 600 spells in the Core Rulebook, it trims down to around 440 pages. I haven't started messing around with class spell lists (level/name/short description) yet, but those would probably run another 50 pages or so.

I'm not sure what other elements you all would want included in this product, but now's the time to discuss.

A 500 page print-on-demand 8.5x11" book would run about $36 in full color or $7 in black and white -- I would sell them at cost through Amazon CreateSpace. I'm not sure the legality of publishing this stuff, but if everything here sounds good and someone can help me work out the legal issues, I can have something ready on amazon in a few weeks.

If you do decide to go ahead with this, please keep us informed. I do think spell lists would be a must for this.

As far as the legal stuff goes, the best thing I can do is point you to the compatibility license and tell you to talk to some of the 3PPs.

The Compatibility License is a little different, I think. The biggest and most important part would be the Open Game License, which is what allows you to legally take and reprint material. You'll have a very long license section - you need to cite every source from every product with a Paizo spell, basically, which means somehow getting all that info - but I'm pretty sure it's doable.

Even if it couldn't be a physical book I would certainly buy something like this (and a feats version) if it was released as a PDF.

Okay, here's what I've decided: Go big.

I'll include all spells from the Core Rulebook as well, since chopswil's database includes the keyword tags. I won't be fixing/adjusting any spells, since I'm not a game designer.

I'll include all of the spell lists, with each spell's school noted.

And I won't be making anything available until every last PF1 product is published -- I'm fairly certain that there will be spells in Planar Adventures, for example, and I want to be sure to include everything, or else what's the point.

That said, it's looking like it will be more than 600 pages, and maybe as much as 700 pages depending on the way things shake out. So it will probably be split into two volumes.

Sit tight, we'll publish in a year or so.

Honestly I wouldn't even mind a couple of splat books for this, like "Arcane Spell Codex" and "Divine Caster's codex" etc.

Dark Archive

Copying those links are returning Not Found error. :(

That's because Paizo automatically inserts a space in text URLs two letters from the end. You have to remove that space to actually get to the right URL after pasting it into the address bar. ^^ Or you can use the URL tags to link stuff directly.

Dark Archive

Thank you. Derp for not noticing that.

While I agree that this would be useful (and I would probably buy the PDF version)...I much prefer using online spell card databases...such as Perram's Spellbook. It is so nice having all the details right there, with around 8 per page. Even casters like Clerics who get all spells...I pick the ones I will generally use and make a spellbook out of that.

A Spell Compendium would be nice, but I don't think I'd buy a hardback of it....of course, I don't really buy ANY hardbacks any longer.

Full disclosure: One thing that might not be obvious is that I do some post-processing on the spell text to get the text to fit on the spell cards. I don't mess with the spell descriptions, but I do condense the text in the spell "headers" (range, duration, area/effect/target, saves, spell resistance, etc.) and also standardize it so that the spell headers are consistent.

For example, if you read through spells from the various sources, you'll see them refer to "feet" as "feet", "ft.", "ft", and "foot". I change all of these to just "ft."

Count me as interested in a compendium product.

While I can appreciate this...I actually do not like your layout. I don't make cards out of it, I leave them on paper, and I don't want to flip sides all the time to see the description of the spells vs. the mechanical stuff. Perram's makes it all on one side for me.

Now, if you have an option to make them print like Perram's, I'll move to yours :)

Basically, it'd be a spell sheet/grid option: print a free-form grid of cards, not necessarily for cutting out but for viewing on a sheet as discussed in email.

I like the idea. I'll come up with something. It will take me some time that I don't have though. ;)

Would you be including the errata and complete lists of the classes each spell is available to, not updating or fixing them, but rather genuinely completing the database?

Examples would be the classes post CRB and the expanded Summon Monster list from the Bestiaries.

Do you have the ability to crunch numbers and page count for a release that only includes Core Line releases (Role Playing Game)?

It's been stated that they want to avoid replicating D&D books, so an official Spell Compendium is likely out of the picture for this reason as well.

A little off topic, but I don't suppose you have a traits database in the works? The one on d20pfsrd is incomplete (not updated since created in 2014), lacks sources for most of what is there, and, of course, lacks any Golarion content.

Thanks for those you do have listed.. some of them will prove quite handy for a project I'm working on. (Which may or may not get completed and released into the wild, but that's a matter of how dedicated I remain.)

p.s. That last one in your list is Afflictions not Affiliations!

sorry no plans for a traits DB

it's rough going back through ALL the pathfinder pubs to find everything, i did that with feats.

I'm currently working on a traits database - the problem is that Archives of Nethys doesn't have the newest sources in their lists*, and I'm too lazy to add everything manually.

Thus, Player Companions since Heroes of the High Court aren't included yet, and there are a lot of traits in those books (>100). Maybe I'll add them tomorrow.

*) I simply use a spreadsheet to convert AoN lists.

There is no value in the product if they just reprint all the spells. They need to issue updates, and with the change in focus this seems to be a loser.
Ult Wilderness tried to update some things and had a plethora of issues.
Spells are particularly tricky and wording tends to get overminced and parsed. It takes some expertise to write a good mechanic that is well understood. The older 3.5 spell descriptions have legacy issues.

Sign me up for a Pathfinder Spell Compendium. At this point I've pretty much bought all the Pathfinder products I'm going to buy, but I would make an Olympus-sized exception for a PF Spell Compendium.

That said, as hugely as I want it, I was just reading that Paizo is about to leave off publishing 1E hardbacks for good, so this is one of those "as long as I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony" requests.

And the fact that none of the devs has commented here doesn't inspire me with much hope.

After adding the newest traits from Blood of the Ancients, I realized that I totally forgot to post the link after finishing my promised trait database spreadsheet. Here it is!
