I'm more concerned with the 'buy 100% sell 10% all time every time, across the universe'. It makes no sense, and destroys the immersion. It's not required, plenty of other systems have buy/sell that doesn't require non-merchants to be drooling morons.

that's about right when you factor in that modern business are not generally in the business or purchasing from the consumer. i mean your not going to be able to go down to Walmart and sell a shovel you bought at the farm store. yes some specialty stores will purchase used items at a significant loss to you, but those are called pawn shops and you get about 40$ for a a ps4 unless they have a high demand for what your selling them.

why would starfinder be much different?

I can buy a $500 tv from Walmart today.

I can, in 6 months, sell said $500 tv on E-bay, LetItGo, Consignment Stores, etc for $300. If I limit myself to pawn shops, then yes, I can sell it for $50.

By the same token, if I go out to buy a TV from the pawn shop, I will pay, for that same $500 tv, about $200. Or I'll go out on E-bay, LetItGo, or the local Consignment store and get it for $300 if the local pawn shop doesn't have one.

What Starfinder has done has said 'there is no secondary market for anything, all you can do is recycle things, nobody will ever buy a used product, so everything is pushed into a recycling nano-factory and you only get salvage value for it'. That's not realistic.

That $40 PS4 you posit is proof that it's hosed up, because you are ignoring the fact that I could go in and buy that PS4 for $80, far below the retail $500.

Starfinder core rulebook, page 168:

"Weapons that use standard ammunition (arrows, charges, darts, mini-rockets, petrol, rounds, scattergun shells, etc.) are sold preloaded"

Would this not mean that a character could purchase a 100-credit scattergun to gain a 330-credit high-capacity battery?

High capacity batteries are level 4 ammunition, you can't get them at level 1 character generation. *Loophole closed*

Starfinder core rulebook, page 218:

"Items specified with a usage use a battery that comes fully charged when purchased. Such batteries can be recharged as normal using generators or recharging stations (see Professional Services on page 234), or they can be replaced (see Table 7-9: Ammunition for battery prices)."

Lower down on the same page:

":Capacity: This lists the maximum capacity for an item that requires charges to function. An item that holds electrical charges can be replenished with a battery (see page 190)."
Replenished not replaced, because the item itself holds the charges not a battery. Though the fault here lies with Paizo for not being able to keep the rules consistent ON THE SAME PAGE. *loophole not closed: Paizo please!*

Why would anyone assume that a weapon like a scattergun (which fires shells and does not use up battery charges) would have a battery at all?

I chose to ignore that fact and focus on the idea that s/he was getting much better equipment at character generation than the rules allow.

They shoot D batteries.

Shadow Lodge

Hmm. I assumed items with charges were like they were in Pathfinder; there's batteries, and there's the item, which has its OWN battery. The batteries you buy are basically a fuel take for charge.

To me, the problem isn't the infinite loop, but the fact it makes charging a waste of money.

Why would anyone recharge that battery? Buy a new gun, pop the battery and throw the gun in storage. Use it for trade with local thugs. Donate it to the local orphans. Heck, throw the gun away and you are still ahead financially.

Because sometimes you are in a place where there is no vendor conveniently around the corner.
