Philosopher’s Stone

Rules Questions

hello everybody

me and my allies has found a philosopher’s stone and i have some question on what we can and can't do, the stone say this

''This rare substance appears to be an ordinary, sooty piece of blackish rock. If the stone is broken open (break DC 20), a cavity is revealed at the stone’s heart. This cavity is lined with a magical type of quicksilver that enables any character with at least 10 ranks in Craft (alchemy) to transmute base metals (iron and lead) into silver and gold. A single philosopher’s stone can turn up to 5,000 pounds of iron into silver (worth 25,000 gp), or up to 1,000 pounds of lead into gold (worth 50,000 gp). However, the quicksilver becomes unstable once the stone is opened and loses its potency within 24 hours, so all transmutations must take place within that period.

The quicksilver found in the center of the stone may also be put to another use. If mixed with any cure potion while the substance is still potent, it creates a special oil of life that acts as a true resurrection spell for any dead body it is sprinkled upon. ''

so can i use it to make 1000 pounds of lead into gold (for 50k GP) and then make a potion of true ressurection or its either transform into silver or gold or make a potion of true ressurection?

thank you in advance for your replies

The way I understand it is, you can only choose one option, not both.

ok, but the thing is that never they say that the substance lose its potency when used to make the transmutation, they only say it lose its potency after 24 hours and as long it has potency you can make the true resurrection potion they say, that's why i am a little confused about that

"The quicksilver found in the center of the stone may also be put to another use." The wording heavily implies this is an alternative use for the quicksilver, not an additional one.

You need to choose which you value more; your money or your life.

ok thank you, since i am not a native speaker i was a little confuse and wanted to be really sure.

i think i will take the money with that we will be able to have the equivalent of lot of raise dead with ''free'' restoration with a staff i am creating or 2 true resurrection

As an aside, is anyone else bothered by the fact that they don't list the price for 1000 pounds of lead?
The price of iron is listed here as 1 sp per pound, so 5000 pounds of iron is 500 gp, giving you a net gain of 24500 gp on transmuting iron to silver. And no, the 25000 gp in the description of the Philosopher's Stone is clearly not meant to be the net gain because according to that table, 5000 pounds of silver actually is 25000 gp which fits.

But I can't find the price of lead anywhere. Did I overlook something? How much does lead cost?

the only way i have find to calculated the price of lead is with the lead golem http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/bestiary5/golems.html#golem-lead

which weight 10,000 lbs and cost 7500 of lead so if we do the division lead cost 1,33 periodically, so for 1 GP 3 SP and 3 CP a thousand pounds of lead is worth 1333 GP 3 SP 3 CP, which is a a great amount of GP gain, so its better to transform lead instead of iron

Edit: if someone can correct me on my math do it, because i know i am not the best at math maybe i have done my calculation wrong (very surely)

Nope, you got it wrong, what you just calculated is how much lead you get for 1 gp which is 1.33 lbs.

It's far simpler. 10,000 lbs costs 7500 gp, so 1000 lbs costs 750 gp.

It's still ridiculous that the rules to work with an artifact in Ultimate Equipment are in Bestiary Freaking 5. But thanks for the answer, anyway.

So, 1 lb of lead costs 7.5 sp.
