What I figure though is that Technomancers and Mystics DO have some access to 7th-9th level spells, even if not through spell slots or spells known. If both Starfinder and Pathfinder classes have access to 9th level spells, it's not as bad.
Where I'm still shakey however is that 9th level spellcasters traditionally gain spellslots and spell levels far faster than 6th level casters. If Mystic and Technomancer are inherently worse spellcasters than Wizards and Clerics, well... I guess it's a good thing this is a third party book.
I trust all of you. I'll pay for a hardback of this and its companion sight unseen. I imagine you guys are about to explode because you can't actually talk about what you did and why because Starfinder isn't out yet. I mean, you can only dance around it so much without giving away privileged information. I imagine that once Starfinder releases you'll be gushing all over the place.
I really liked Star Wars SAGA edition and between the teasers and forums I have a good idea what to expect at this point. I'm still keeping my expectations under control because I want to be pleasantly surprised when I actually get my hands on the book.
I've been thinking about redoing a bunch of the classes to update and reduce them but I put that on hold when I heard about Starfinder. I have a feeling I'll be rebuilding them to use the core mechanics from Starfinder. The Starfarer's Companion will go a long way to making that process so much easier by giving me templates to work from instead of me having to do it whole cloth with my limited time.
September and October are going to be really expensive months this year.

I notice you didn't mention the Monk as one of the classes in your blurb at the front...does this mean you don't have a conversion because there's already a Monk in the Core book or you don't have one because it doesn't fit OR you have one and just didn't put it in the blurb????
(I love Monks)
I think Rogue One: A Star Wars story proved that monks have a place in sci-if.
However, we didn't do a monk for this book for a couple of different reasons, the biggest being that it wasn't high on my or Matt's list to tackle. We mostly picked classes that we felt had design problems that we wanted to correct and improvefor SF. (For example, I set out to fix the fact that no combat bardic performance that bards get ever competes with inspire courage, and both Matt and I wanted clerics and wizards to have meaningful choices.) We felt that the monk had less of a need. However, if SFC proves as popular as we hope, it's officially a real contender for the sequel. ;-)

There is no monk in our book.
I actually CAN'T SAY what's in the core book, because Rogue Genius Games is under an NDA regarding all the material we had access to.That said, none of the official Paizo Starfinder threads have hinted at their being a monk in Starfinder, so take that for what it is worth.

The first of those two. I publish all of my work under the name "Matt" (not "Matthew") in an attempt to lessen confusion.

In our book? We didn't have room for archetypes! There's something crazy like 200 spells in this book.
As for the grippli, I think I did alright by them. They're mostly true to their PF roots, but I think the art and the Blood Space flavor sells them hard. (Of course, if you want to play a grippli from Paizo's setting you can.

I expect the Solarion to fit my idea of a space-monk. However, I like my RPG monks to have mystical powers that come from being one with the universe. (Incidentally, I see Jedi more as space-monks than space-wizards; at least the more martially inclined ones).
If you just want a class that is good at kicking and punching people, the Solarion is probably less good a fit, and there's room for RGG or another 3PP to design a class around that. Not sure if that would involve high-tech brass knuckles a-la Shocker from Spider-Man, or maybe a class concept similar to Physical Adepts from Shadowrun...

Solarion can actually be very effective at punching people, as the solar weapon they create can take any form. If it's just a gauntlet or brass knuckles made from light, it's an easy stand in for either Iron fist or ShoNuff.

@Owen
So how much of this is just you making Starfinder the way Paizo wouldn't let you do it? :P
None of it.
With each game company hat I wear, I make the decisions that I think are the best for that company. While as with any collaborative effort there are things I would have done differently if I had ultimate game design power (not that I'd ever have finished the game if I was doing it all myself), none of those calls are about races or classes or new feats, or any of the stuff in Starfarer's Companion.
Wearing my Starfinder Design Lead hat, there's nothing in Starfarer's Companions I'd shove into the core rulebook at the expense of taking out equal word count of something else even if I could. I think the designers (myself included) made the best decisions that can be made for the Starfinder game.
Wearing my RGG hat, I can see that some people might like someone to do a professional level job converting Pathfinder stuff into Starfinder for them. There's a design paradigm difference, some subtle changes in philosophy, and lots of different paths that could be taken, with some cooler than others. That makes sense to me as RGG publisher as an add-on product. But that's all supplemental, designed to build on the framework Paizo has built for this new game.
And, some players want lots and lots of options. RGG wants to give them some of those. Paizo can only produce so much material, so fast, and will prioritize things that build the world they want, not the dozens or hundreds of similar campaigns you could do with the Starfinder rules + some stuff.
This is RGG's first run at "plus some stuff." It absolutely is NOT anything I'd have added to the core rulebook in any capacity. It's not more official, or somehow a secret preview. I'm not even the person who wrote it -- two freelancers did (hi Alex and Matt!).
RGG material is not conceptually or ecologically better than any other 3pp content for Starfinder, and I am looking forward to seeing what a lot of our fellow publishers do with THIER Starfinder-compatible products, both on day 1 (which Paizo made possible for all of us), and afterward.
I think RGG's stuff is *good*, of course. But it doesn't have any special relationship with what went into the core rulebook, or what will go into the future official Paizo rules. It's just more good 3pp content.

Mmm, yes and no. I could go into it, but Owen and I haven't talked about releasing more information about the Campaign Setting yet. I'll mention it to him. :)
In any consolation, the Starfarer's Companion paints a pretty good picture of it using its rules (i.e. many of the new Starships are based on Blood Space names and ideas, and all of the races have the aforementioned 'Blood Space flavor'). In addition, we have stuff further down the pipes that'll help answer your question too.
Sorry I can't be more specific (for now)!
| GM Rednal |
I'm gonna guess blood is involved somehow. 8D
But I can think of a couple other ideas to bounce off the walls, including:
• There's some really powerful blood artifact somewhere in the setting that affects the region of space and changes the races.
• War. War never changes.
• Genetic experiments changed the local races from their 'base' versions, possibly gifting them with powers rarely seen in other areas.
• Lots of areas are associated with various 'clans' or other sorts of groups (maybe or maybe not mafia-like) that are competing with each other (and maybe cooperating on occasion).
• Literal blood space. Like, actual sphere of blood surrounding the area (from what? Don't ask), and maybe serving as a kind of cosmic ether people travel through to reach other worlds in the setting.
• The Evening Star said hi.

Well, what are you waiting for? Go and talk to him! :)
He'll see this is a perfect opportunity to continue to raise awareness and excitement about this product. :)
In the meantime... Blood Space to me sounds like a horror/fantasy themed sci-fi campaign. Maybe tech is not as reliable in this part of space or something like that which makes magic more prevalent (hence the fantasy classes).

Owen knows the value of getting people excited for a product. Owen also knows the harm in telling people SO much about a product that they're sated on your idea before the book ever comes out and end up not buying it. The man is a GENIUS with many more years of RPG industry experience than me. Like I said, we'll talk about it. :)
Tonight isn't a good night for that talk, though, because he has (now had) an appearance on Know Direction with Jason Keeley. :D

I know that this is a silly question, but will this be available through the Paizo store?
Absolutely. The pdf no question, and my plan to to do a run of at least some POD books, and physically tote them over to the office myself, so they are available. the better sales are, the more of those I'll tote over.

It's okay Alex, we can have this conversation publicly. In code.
Tell them about the reason why Blood Space is called "Blood Space." But don;t mention the name of the thing we may rename, or the name of the thing that name is based on, or the names of the people fighting over the stuff from the thing.
...
And do it in 25 words or less. :D

I just want to know how we explain the supernova not wrecking the planets. XD I hear 50-100 light-years is about the point where it's 'safe', so... can we assume the setting is at least that big?
(...Hey, it's a science fantasy game. XD Presumably something at least vaguely resembling science still applies - although the fantasy bit leads for easy explanations when things don't make real-world sense. Also, I'm mostly just lobbing these thoughts for entertainment.)
