Keeping animal companions relevant in a mythic game

Due to an inglorious death and a great GM, I'm going to be playing a mongrelman hunter in our Wrath of the Righteous game soon.

I'm trying to come up with ways to keep his animal companion relevant during mythic play. It seems to me that there are so few options out there for the animal companion of a mythic character. Does anyone have any good advice that will keep my poor pig-lizard from getting totally left behind?

If Third Party is okay, I think the Mythic Heroes Handbook (which fills a lot of holes in the Mythic rules) has a universal path ability that makes your Animal Companion/Eidolon/etc. mythic itself.

I think the "Saint" Mythic Path introduced in that book also has animal companion stuff (and I honestly like the idea of a sainted Mongrelman, personally.)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Guardian and Marshal both have mythic tier abilities that effect animal companions and other Mythic characters. Since the game is a Mythic Game, once your AC obtains 3 Int you can make it learn the Mythic Companion feat which allows it to consider itself a mythic creature of abilities.

The Guardian has the Beast's fury base power which allows you to command your AC around, Mythic Companion which gives it up to 10 surges per day, Raise Animal to allow you to keep bringing Snaggles back from the dead, Impervious Companion if you want to invest in DR/Epic [Though I'd personally avoid this], Shrug it Off for critical immunity for both yourself and your AC, and lastly companion power to grant it a 1st level guardian ability.

The Marshal gives your AC the ability to heal whenever you surge and bonus damage on a Lance Charge, not useful for your character since I do not think you plan on ridding Snaggles around, but something to remember.

Additionally, any Mythic ability that effects allies will effect your AC. So taking the defensive Guardian options or the utility Marshal options (or both with Duel Path) would probably help with keeping them useful.

Don't forget Mythic Spells, Mythic Companion Mind Link will make Snaggles absurdly smart for a few precious minutes. Mythic Magic Fang works on more natural weapons, and Mythic Greater Magic Fang is awesome. There are other potential Mythic Spells that might come in handy as well.

I found that the animal companion of the Ranger PC in my Wrath campaign continued to be of use until the end game, with spell buffing and magical gear it could hit and do signifigant damage and indeed at one point solo killed a Balor
