So I have a question. Why is it that people keep coming to the defense of slavery? There is always an outcry of "slavery isn't inherently evil" whenever someone states that it is. Yet other similar evils are accepted? Is the burning of books and the burial of scholars a neutral acts? How about executing children who might have a better claim to your throne when you take power? What of forced religious conversion? I mean all of those things were common throughout human history and "accepted" as a normal way the world worked. The Byzantines were noted for being exceptionally compasionate for merely disfiguring and exiling rival clamants to the throne instead of having them killed. So was Shakespeare giving Richard 3 a bad rap because what happened to the Princes in the Tower was clearly just lawful neutral?

Because moral absolutism has gotten a very bad rep over the past fifty years, for any number of reasons. Partly it's a result of the rise of postmodernism and similar philosophies, which have given "us" an inherent trust of metanarratives such as moral progress. Part of it is innate contrariness, which has been amplified over the past fifty years with the collapse of our trust in society and authority.

But the effect is that if I say "such-and-such is inherently evil," there are thousands or millions of people out there who will instantly jump to their feet and start to defend it. Similarly, if I say that "such-and-such is inherently good," there are thousands or millions of detractors, some of them even the same people.

As someone pointed out on another thread (that's still going on, but I'm too lazy to find the link), people on this forum are happy to try to find ways to redeem demons, but are also completely happy to murderhobo their way through a temple that they've been told to loot, to the point of killing the cleaning staff just because they don't want to risk anyone escaping.

And it was obviously memorable, so I congratulate you!

Locking. Given the trend for discussions like this one in the past few months, threads about "slavery in gaming" have become circular in way that does not benefit our community (in fact, in some cases, working to drive wedges within our community through racially/culturally insensitive posts). There is a fine line between discussing mature/socially unacceptable themes in a game and having that rhetoric come across as advocation of real world issues, not to mention that it's particularly difficult to parse folks' intentions. We're not OK with comments that endorse or skirt around endorsing real world slavery on our website. If you really want to discuss this take it to private messages or another venue.
