Isabel Rhelian |
Hi Everyone.
I'm posting on behalf of the players of THIS Hell's Rebels game, which died out about 9 months ago due to the GM's real life commitments.
We've just decided to try and revive the game and we're looking for a GM who is willing to take on the challenge! We're about half way through the Fair Fortune Livery - although I imagine if a GM wanted to go back to the start of that dungeon, or skip through to the end then there would be no objections.
Current players.
Darian Aulamaxa - Arcane Duellist bard
Varian Tanessen - Hidden Priest cleric
Isabel Rhelian - Mesmerist
Avrora Vikta - Warpriest.
I'm yet to hear back from Galen (psychic) and Phineas (Negotiator bard) but there's at least 4 players, maybe 6 interested.
Hope someone is interested!

How much work is this one for the GM? Would a GM need to keep a stable of NPCs and chart hidden intrigue? I just want a clear picture before I dive into reading the AP (which I already own, no worries) and make you promises that end up being super time intensive and force me to bow out in a similar fashion.
Isabel Rhelian |
The big thing with this AP is keeping track of the rebellion - we haven't got that far in the story (but I own and have run the AP so I know it :) ). It can be book-keeping intensive but equally with a PbP that's something the PC's can do fairly easily. Equally you can just dispense with tracking it altogether and just say 'as long as you spend X weeks on the rebellion it grows to the next rank".

I can't commit to anything yet, but give me a chance to glance through the GM sections of the AP and and skim your thread. If there are any house rules or specific allowances made for your current PCs outside the norm that would be important to know, please advise here or in a PM.
Here's my GM alias, if you would like to see how I handle things. My two active campaigns as GM differ wildly in style as one is a Kingmaker driven by a lot of my own ad lib creation, and the other is like this one, a pick up of an another GM's RotR game which I have been playing straight as written.
Obviously, if my credentials aren't up to your own expectations, no hard feelings. ;-)
EDIT: I'm glad to see Roll20 involved. I already use it, so that would certainly make the transition pretty painless.
GM Space Duck |
I'd be willing to look it over for you all. I am GMing this campaign in meatspace and didn't initially want to do a pbp from the GM side, but I can look to help you out.
I always throw a few odd things into a campaign with a little homebrew flair. Some love it, some not so much. I'd be happy to talk out what you like or don't.
I am also looking to get a GM for a team that I have together. a bunch of recruitment misfits that made our own team and are looking for a GM.
pinvendor |
So I started reading with the recruitment thread, and wow...your former GM certainly hit the ground running with optional rules!
I'd definitely say that if you ever find yourself recruiting a GM for another thread, you'll want to start off mentioning that next time, lol.
Before I dive into this any further, I can tell you I certainly don't have all the encounters adjusted and ready to go, especially in light of Automatic Bonus Progression and several other Ult Cam and Unchained options being included from the get-go. I have generally been a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants GM since PbP usually allows plenty of time for rules adjudication and encounter modifications as things unfold.
My ask is if I were to take up the GM mantle, will your group have the patience for me to try and figure out things as we go along, or do you need someone more experienced with those optional rules and adjustments from the onset?
Quite frankly, if you need me to be 100% up to speed to get started again, you'd probably be looking at a few weeks of prep work from me before I'd even begin to be ready to follow DM Crustypeanut's incredible start on this. Playtested the campaign himself with parties of different point-buys? Holy crap, that's some serious readiness. I have no doubt that he had everything all set up ahead of time basically rewriting the AP's encounters himself based on the confidence he displays in the Recruitment thread.
I'm feeling pretty interested in GMing for you, but I got to admit the guy before me definitely left some huge shoes to follow. Obviously, recalibration back to "AP as written" expectations could also be discussed, but I'd certainly want to take away as little as possible from the awesome experience DM Crustypeanut had planned for you if I can help it.
GM Space Duck: You'll definitely want to read at least the first Recruitment thread post. Their character creation and campaign set up includes a hell of a lot of information.

Greetings, ya'll!
I'm one of the players from the original game and am extremely excited to see there is even a glimmer of hope for a brave, ambitious GM to breathe life back into our promising story. GM Crustypeanut ran a very involved recruitment and was able to select a very cohesive team of players. Our game, though short-lived, is one of the most memorable experiences I've had on the boards, and I still compare just about every game I play to it.
Did I mention I'm excited?
Anyway, @pinvendor, @GM Space Duck, I think it's incredibly charitable of you to even consider picking up an existing game and adapting it as your own. GMing is a lot of work anyway, and trying to catch up with and carry on an existing campaign with existing characters is no small thing!
As to all the rules and crunch, I can't speak for the others, but I wouldn't mind doing away with all the optional rules, including automatic bonus progression, and simply playing the AP "straight."
I'll keep my eye on this thread to help Isabel answer questions.
Cheers!

I don't want you to think I'm unwilling or incapable. I just want to make sure you'll be patient with me while I sort things out even as we move forward.
I just don't want to disappoint if you need someone who is on point from the start. I can imagine I might mess up as I get calibrated to the optional systems and how the AP needs to be adjusted for them.
On the other hand if your experience using them actually led to a desire not to use them, then of course, I would do my best to accommodate that as well. Personally, I like the ABP concept, I just haven't personally implemented it, so I would just need to bone up and make sure I could make the right adjustments for encounters and item reward.
GM Space Duck |
The only ruleset among those that I am not familiar with is words of power. I have my own abp system based on the unchained system that I personally think is smoother, but am open to player votes on the system.
The biggest difference I have with the old GM is that I actually don't like leadership for the sole reason that the cohort tends to clog up combat and encounters. If one of you is intending on that path already I will cooperate, but otherwise I would overturn that one. Also, to protect the challenge of the AP, I reserve the right to deus ex block a called shot. Sorry :P

I second Avrora, it's great to see people kind enough to consider taking this game over for us.
About the extra rules - we're level 1, apart from background skills I don't think we've used a single optional rules system so I'm also happy to just strip them out, particularly if that makes it easier for a new GM! :)
-> ABP: never come into play since we're level 1.
-> Called shots, Words of power: No-one built their characters to use them so I don't imagine it will be problem to drop them.
-> We've never crafted anything either.
So yeah - please don't worry about those, we can lose them easily :D

Then it Is now up to you as a group to decide. It does sound like Space Duck has some experience with this AP and could manage it with the optional rules in place if you prefer. Seems like he would be a good choice if you're looking for a fairly seamless transition.
Personally, I'd probably dial some of the rules back a bit. ABP and fractional BAB are ones I like so they would make the cut while some of the ones Crustypeanut himself considered experimental would have to be examined a bit before they made into play, if ever. As I hinted at before, I'm a bit more loose with some of the rules as I'd rather judge a character's actions in the moment. PF is a little less forgiving than some other systems in that regard, but I think I still do a decent job most of the time, lol.
Let us know what you decide, so either Space Duck or I can send the petition to be given control of the campaign unless you'd rather we start a brand new thread, of course. :)
GM Space Duck |
I'm happy to be in consideration. I am very familiar with this AP. I am running it in meatspace with a group of six.
With me you're getting a wildcard. I have a few homebrew elements I like to put in such as dream sequences and character specific sidestories. I try to run a thin line between letting characters feel powerful and continuing to challenge them, and that is not easy and I don't always succeed.
Full disclosure, I can post several times a day usually, but there will be dry spells that last a couple days at times. Not often mind you, but they happen.
Good luck with choosing, and I'll have another thread looking for a HR GM as soon as this decision is made, as I have a team that is looking
Phineas Aceron |
Phineas here! I would be interested in starting back up again, this was quite a fun campaign with a lot of interesting roleplaying and possibilities. Since this campaign, I started doing some PFS PBP, so I am in more games than I was when we were originally running this, but I should be able to post daily still.
I also don't mind dropping most of the optional rules systems if it makes things easier to run. None of them except background skills have really come up yet, and I am less familiar with some of the systems like called shots than with the base rules, so would be fine with going back more towards the base rules.
Isabel Rhelian |
Well this is a nice position to be in... three GM's interested in running for us! We'll have to put our heads together and see what we come up with. :)
A question for all the GM's: would you continue using RollD20 or something else? It was used effectively for the game so far so it would be nice to know what plans you guys would have one way or another.
Varian Tanessen |
Hey everyone, Giuseppe here. Just like the others, I've always thought this game to have a huge potential. Roleplaying was fun, and the overall quantity of daily posts from the players was more than acceptable. I still remember the roleplaying recruitment with the scene between Varian and Avrora. I'd like to see this game starting over again!
As for the optional rules, I don't care for them at all. Rules are not what makes a PbP game a good game. It's instead posting consistency on both the GM and the players' part.
Hey, Baolus, well met!

I know, right? We're very fortunate to be offered a choice, especially after such a long period of downtime (the GM left last March). It's difficult to turn down anyone who's offering to manage the game, but I think it would be tricky having more than one GM ;).
We've started trying to figure this out, and will post to update you all ASAP!

To be completely honest, I'm not intending to use RollD20 at all. In all my games I've simply used Goggle Drawing for the maps, and I think it always worked OK (at least I think so). After all, I have no idea about how to handle RollD20 and I don't think so it is worthy to try...
About the optional rules, I'd probably prefer to drop the Automatic Bonus Progression, Words of Power and Called Shots.
pinvendor |
I find Roll20 to be extremely easy to use, so I would definitely use it.
As far as the optional rules, it seems most of you are more in favor of foregoing them which would be perfectly fine since I would have to make little to no adjustments beyond CR for party size occasionally I imagine. Assuming it remains at six, of course.

We've not heard from Galen so we're looking at 5 right now. I think the fact that we are all 3/4 casters or better means being one down shouldn't be a problem though :)
GM Space Duck |
Ooh you guys are in the rat fight... Things are gonna get good!
In my meatspace game the charismatic rogue managed to convince the big dumb Warpriest that he had killed our Ratfolk Alchemist. Hilarity ensues as he laments and wails over the unfortunate rat until the alchemist jumps out from hiding yelling "YOU RACIST OAF!"
Isabel Rhelian |
Is the warpriest your front line?
We don't have a 'front line' per say - more a 'scatter and maybe that will confuse them!'. We're all 3/4 BAB and 3/4 casting so we play fairly well both ways...
After putting our collective heads together we'd like to invite Sir Longears to take up our game if you are still willing.
Thanks very much for the interest guys - it's really flattering for us to have had so much interest and we're all really appreciative!
