Well...the point of this bestiary was to be high level, and to also crank out a lot of major demigods that have been fleshed out. Archdevils and Horsemen have been completely put to bed, and Qlippoth Lords and Great Old Ones are pretty tapped out as well. I'd like to see more demigods in future bestiaries, but maybe only one or two sets. Like the Elemental Lords and the the Queens of Darkness for Bestiary 7. Although in general I do agree that we don't really need quite as high a number of high level threats in the next book.
Emphasis mine, for a quick note: I think Strange Aeons presented one GOO in every single issue, so yeah, I agree that we have a lot to use for a while now :P
My point is that if they want to add high-CR creatures in B7, they can and I welcome them to do so... but please keep it under 10 creatures at least.
Plausible Pseudonym |
Personally I wish they would just make a hardcover book of demi-gods and mythic heroes. We can have stats for Eldest, Protean Lords, Old Ones, Mythic NPCs, Empyreal Lords, Demon Lords, etc. in there own book. So we can free up the hardcover bestiaries for more useful/practical creatures.
That would be like your cable company unbundling ESPN and Home and Garden. Never going to happen, the merger of the two gets more sales revenue than both as standalones.

Some balanced races with ...intriguing possibilities! A friend created an NPC race that molts into a new form, radically different from the last, bringing great challenges as a PC race. Alas, severely flawed in so many ways, the race barely works as npc material.
I have players that would like more 'tiny' races for some ability and another has been moping about a size changing race (+1 step when raging). I would like a Aasimar/Tiefling take on the Planar races, having multiples of each (Ash or Soot, Burning Land, City of Brass, Inferno...actually the most hospitable, and Dessi of No Water..the deadliest).
I recognize that having Horror, Occult and space, the Golem can't concentrate on just what I want, but dual settings for some critters might be done, Sylphs living on a low G world, Oreads on a high G. A local game uses Hobgoblins as Klingons and Elves as faux Romulans. H Beam Piper's Little Fuzzies are the Halfling counterpart and hairy half-Orcs are wookie stand-ins. Other than Humans, those are the only ones I know...I think.

Outsiders: Oitos Kyton, New Rakshasa, new Asuras, new Manasaputra, the last six Oni to finish out the roster from CR 2-20, Xiuh Couatl, other couatls.
Folklore: Isiququmadevu, Kamakiri (maybe as an Advanced Familiar option?), Bakunawa (it swallows the moon! How's that for high level!?), Huayramama,
The Children of Ana: Poreskoro, Minceskro, Lolmischo, Bitoso, Schilayli, Tçaridyi, Tçulo, Lilyi, and Melalo
Fearsome Critters: Terrashots, Slide-Rock Bolters, Squonks, Whirling Whimpuses, Agropelters
Literature: Uliri (the Martians from War of the Worlds), Aihai/Yorhi (Clark Ashton Smith's Martians), Sorats and Calots (ERB's Martian cats and dogs)
Yes, I do want all the martians I can get. Akiton is just WAITING for a module or AP. I'd be asking for Malacandrans if they were public domain.
Dragons: We haven't had a paired set of dragons since original D&D gave us Metallic vs Chromatic. I know we're only ever gonna get 5 True Dragons at a time, but it'd be nice if B7's set could be paired against the Primal, Outer, Esoteric, or Planar Dragons.
Lastly, I think the last of the closed content D&D Classics without Pathfinder Original or OGL substitutes are the Beholders - I'd love to see that last perceived gap plugged.

Folklore - Any, I love critters from folklore.
Literature - What no Banths, Thoats, Plantmen or Ulisos? How about Theskar and Kanagans from Venus, or the Skeleton men of Jupiter? (Not sure that the last three are in the public domain though, but the 1st 4 are [since books 1 - 3 managed to slip into the public domain])
Dragons - Not sure, I think we have enough; but if they were to do a paired set, how about a set of counterparts to the Imperial Dragons?
Closed Content - Where is there a Pathfinder Original or 3rd party equivalent to the Mind Flayer (I really want to know this, not being sarcastic).

Even if they are very different from my Ooglers, floating eyeballs were never a D&D invention. Take away the rocky exterior and replace levitation with a gas bladder and it's a whole different aberration.

As Dragon78 has said, after so long, I have lost my hope in the possibility of Paizo ever publishing a "dragonborn" or a "feyborn" race that works like aasimars and tieflings.
Kobolds and Wyvarans are what we are getting for dragon-like 0HD races, and the gnome are our First World human-like playable race... =/
Well, at least we have enough races to take as examples to design our own "dragonborn" and "feyborn" races. Supporting material for more balanced rule options and flavorful books are what we are not getting...
I would love if Paizo ever published a book focused on completely new playable races! *-*

Well, let's see here, for new content, in no particular order
- boabhan sith (CR 8 blood-drinking dancing fey fey)
- The Questing Beast (abberation or fey, maybe magical beast)
- Giltine Psychopomps (I feel like these should be CR 19, possibly as ones who enforce the rules of Purgatory on outsiders and immortals and other powerful entities)
-Mor Psychopomps (CR 6 Serpentine Psychopomps who maintain a presence in the mortal world, silently and invisibly following indivduals of potential importance to fate)
- Knuckers (CR 8 flightless dragons who lurk in wells and rivers and strangle their prey)
- Anasi (CR 12 Native Outsiders, spider-like trickster spirits)
-More Inevitables
-More Sahkil
- More Proteans
- more Asura
- more celestials
Reprint wise, the rest of the Council of Thieves devils, the dwoemercat and skirk nettle from Kingmaker, the new leshies from Ironfang, and pretty much all the fey that havent been rounded up yet.

I want Granfaloon from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Easily one of the most unique creatures from the Castlevania franchise and would definitely create a unique scenario if it existed in PF. I would see the creature itself as an abberation with it's zombies (should be called Legion) as undead.
And I think the name Granfaloon is better than Legion, even as a fan of Cat's Cradle.
FormerFiend |
I'd really like to see a goliath expy. A player race that's basically a medium-sized giant. I don't need the "uses large-category weapons" racial ability to go with it, just the fluff of a half-giant style race.
I'd also like a second aberration player race. Preferably one that doesn't look absolutely ridiculous, cough yaddithian cough. I'm sorry, had something in my throat. I said yaddithian. I would personally prefer a cthulhu-humanoid player race but I understand if they can't do that without skirting too close to the mindflayers, but give me something that doesn't at best look goofy and comical and at worst evoke over the top racist caricatures.
Staying on the playable races train for one more suggestion, I've seen people bring up fey and dragonic equivalents of aasimar/tieflings/geniekin/fetchling/ganzi, which I'm all for, but we also don't have an Axis/lawful aligned equivalent of the same and I'd like to see that niche filled in as well. No idea what it would be but I wanna see it along with those suggestions.
Far as high level baddies go I'd like to see the kyton demagogues. I feel the time is right to put a hurt on some demagogues.

I'd like to see Chicheface and Bigorne as a single, sexually dimorphic, species of monster with distinct stat blocks for each sex. It would probably be a good idea to lose the misogynist overtones of the original folklore, though.

Given the origins of that monster, that would be a really really tough monster to adapt.

On the subject of old literary aliens, I'm not sure how many are open content but Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials describes a ton of them.

Yes but can all those creatures be used legally?
Hitchhiker's Guide, absolutely not.
Lovecraft's peers? some might have complicated copyright protections, although I think Robert E. Howard is at least fine...CAS/Frank Belknap Long/Donald Wandrei...no clue
The rest should be fine, although I will note the Book of Imaginary Beings also has some stuff straight up from mythology/folklore, like the Hidebehind.

Most of them [i]should[i] be.
Most of Donald and Howard Wandrei's works were published between 1926-1987, the vast majority of them were written before the 40's. Clark Ashton Smith may be a little difficult (aside from the ones that are not named, but described.) He started writing in 1910, and was still writing poetry when he died in 1961. Long's creatures should be mostly okay to use as well. His short fiction was largely written between 1920-1994 and are technically more difficult to track copyrights (the only technical contention with some of his usable creatures would be Petersen Games or Chaosium).
Also, MMCJawa, almost Everything in Book of Imaginary Creatures is either from Mythology, The Old Fearsome Beasts of the Lumberwoods books, or some early weird fiction (Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, Franz Kafka)
On a Separate Note, there is an absolutely amazing creature from Polynesian Mythology that has previously escaped my notice, and since I found out about it a week ago, I thought I'd mention it:
Pe'ape'a-maka-walu (Eight-Eyed Bat)

Well...Borges CLAIMED that everything was from folklore/mythology/literature, but at least some creatures appear to have been invented by him. A Book of Creatures blog discusses this at some length, with Peryton being a pretty famous example in DnD circles.
My sense was that the CAS stuff wasn't completely clear, which was why Paizo teamed up with Chaosium and put some CAS creatures in the Strange Aeons bestiaries. There is also the added difficulty that some creatures are vaguely described, and so the Call of Cthulhu describes them in more detail, with that version being the default.
But I mean I am all for more pulp creatures, including the named creatures on that list.
AmbassadoroftheDominion |
the CAS creatures that have names aren't clear cut. Honestly, most of the creatures he mentions are either mythological, or are just descriptions without names, so Paizo could legitimately use them for inspirations. of the roughly 3000 names or descriptions I have typed down (in a handy dandy excel spreadsheet where I am attempting to catalogue creatures mentioned by or developed by notable weird fiction and sci-fi writers, beginning with Lovecraft and his correspondents) from his Fantasy, most of them were plants.

Now, speaking about Bestiary 7 theme, what would you like it to be?
We have got the following themes up until now:
B1) Classic Monsters
B2) Fantastic Beasts
B3) Mythological Creatures
B4) Mythic Monsters or Alien Monsters
B5) Occult Powers
B6) Legendary Foes
I would like to see a bestiary that focus on populating the setting with "monstrous societies" like never before, with At least 10 brand new 0HD races and a new creature "subtype" for each of the following creature type: aberration, fey, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, plant and undead.
Groups like the Blight Ooze or the Wild Hunt introduced on Bestiary 6 and earlier ones like the Formian and the Thriae, they really help GMs into populating vast areas with creatures that are easily related. I'm really a fan of monstrous societies/categories/groups/subtypes (or however you like to call them)... I would love to see a bestiary focused on introducing more of them.
Wannabe Demon Lord |
My current (actually greatly reduced, but still massive) wish list of mythical creatures for the bestiaries. Bolded creatures are in the game but haven't been reprinted for a bestiary, *creatures are gods which I'd like to see a non-divine race or a demigod based on, **creatures are in the books, but I'd like to see another take on under a variant name.
Edit: Seems like the bolding didn't work.

A lot more mythological creatures especially Japanese, Native American, Australian, Celtic, Polynesian, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, African, Middle Eastern, and Indian. Also I wouldn't mind some aliens, robots, and occult/psychic related creatures as well.
Moana has totally made me want more Polynesian myth ^^
Also, yea, more robots!

I would still like a beauty and the beast style cursed template to turn a humanoid into a monstrous humanoid and another one for his furniture/object cursed subjects. In fact there are plenty of things from fairy tales that could be used. Like who and what was Rumplestiltskin, he could be interesting fey creature. A template that turns animals into talking magical beast with a list of different powers to choose from like fire breath, wings, teleport at will in woodland areas, walking on water or clouds, magical horn, freedom of movement, tongues, and even granting a person 1-3 wishes.

Sure, it's all fascinating to use in a story, a fable, or a tale.
But this is game. Do you ever pause to think "wait, would that work in a tactical wargame that's about killing things and taking their stuff"?

You could say the same thing about having stats for CR26-30 demon lords/arch devils that can kill a party of 20th level characters easily by themselves not including their vast armies and so high mental stats that you could never out smart them or get away. That doesn't sound like any fun at all to me. Unless your actually roleplaying and not thinking of the game as murder hobos. So if you are using your imagination then anything can be useful depending on the theme of the adventure.
