Module: Crypt of Everflame

GM Discussion

Hi, first time doing a game for PFS credit and have a few questions...

*I leveled the characters to 2nd during play, rather than waiting. Does that matter? If so, is there any way to salvage some credit such as breaking it into two runs (ie one with 2/3 success conditions and another with 1/3)?

*I gave players the bonded mind team feat for free. Again, does that matter?

*Where are the success conditions located for Crypt of the Everflame? They are not in the free download on the modules page here.

*How many PP do players get? The PFS guide says the GM gets 4, but not sure that is the same amount for players.

*We played 15 pt buy, not 20. Matters?

If this seems odd, its because we waited until after playing to decide to make it for PFS credit.

It's only available for PFS credit when played with PFS characters using PFS rules.

It seems clear to me that this was not the case in this instance.

Ok, is the following PFS GM style applicable to any other modules:

Quote:

Alternatively, you may play the entirety of The

Dragon’s Demand, afterward receiving credit for playing
the sanctioned portions of the adventure as if you had
played a pregenerated character. In this case, GMs
running the module are not bound to the rules of the
Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign (such as
20-point buy, unavailability of hero points, etc.) when
running the campaign or the sanctioned portion of the
adventure.

Also, isn't that kind of how it works for APs? Not saying that justifies anything here, just asking.

AFAIK, it only applies to APs and Dragon's Demand.

Alright, thanks. The roleplaying guild guide mentions a "sanctioned content document" available for each sanctioned module on its product page, but I only found a chronicle sheet for crypt (no details about success conditions, breaking it into multiple sessions, etc). While not nearly as long Dragon's Demand, I would think its much longer than a normal scenario.

Wait, sanctioned modules can't be run in "campaign mode" anymore? When did that happen? P. 11 of the guide clearly states that they can.

The only modules that can be run in campaign mode are the 64 pg newer format modules that explicitly allow campaign mode in their rules for running, which is found in the download that includes chronicles. Dragon's Demand and modules printed after it are the only modules with campaign mode on the table. The entry for module mode on pg 11 of the guide states that most modules only give credit to PFS legal characters. The modules have to specifically include the option for campaign mode.

Alex: Campaign mode for modules was gone from the guide as early as Season Five, I don't have a copy of the earlier Guides so I don't know exactly when campaign mode for all modules was removed, but the first module to have campaign mode since I started back in 2013 was Dragon's Demand.

Mitch, for future reference where can I find that rule, is it mentioned in the guild guide? I will definitely take a look at the modules listing post Dragon's Demand for my next attempt.

If the download only has the chronicle sheet, than the module is only available in Module Mode as laid out on pg 11 of the Season Eight PFS Guide. For an example of one that gives access to campaign mode, check out the download for Dragon's demand.

Edit: The rules for additional sactioned content like modules and AP's are on pg 11 of the Guide. The wording isn't as clear as it could be, but the intent is that a module only has campaign mode if it's download says so.

Hmm, I don't doubt you, but yes there is no way anyone would infer that from the guild guide text...zero mention of downloads, or two types of sanctioned content.

Granted we decided to do PFS at the last minute and the issue probably wouldn't come up for others.

Actually you can play any module in campaign mode, as per page 11 of the guild guild. Look at Campaign mode, under the 'Additional Playable Content' header

Actually, the wording got a bit vague in the guide.

If campaign mode is available for a module is stated in the sanctioning document of the module.

As a general, the old, 32 pages modules and free RPGday modules do not have campaign mode, and the new, 64 page modules do have campaign mode.

There's nothing vague about the wording at all.

Adventure Paths, GMs are allowed to use their own
rules for character creation and running the presented
content (the entire book or series)."

Due to a major overhaul of the guide for season 8, the current text in the Guide is wrong on a few things and misleading on several others. There are several things that could be construed as policy changes"--things like new reroll rules, accidental campaign mode, ability to play a tier 1 adventure at level 2, etc. that were not intended. Because they weren't intended to be policy changes, the old rules are still in effect.

Unfortunately, this means that you cannot trust the Guide right now; hopefully with the release of the Season 9 guide the unintentional policy changes will be cleared up! Check with a knowledgeable venture-officer on edge cases at least until the new guide is out.
