Possession - how to tell someone is possessed?!

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

Title says it all. I havenˋt found a way for a pc to discern if someone is possessed or not...
Any hint or help is really appreciated.

Sense Motive is your friend.

Sense Enchantment: You can tell that someone's behavior is being influenced by an enchantment effect even if that person isn't aware of it. The usual DC is 25, but if the target is dominated (see dominate person), the DC is only 15 because of the limited range of the target's activities.

Although it doesn't specifically reference possession, this should work in a similar way.

I believe there is a specific system referencing possession, also using Sense Motive, but don't recall offhand where to look it up.

Would Detect Undead work if someone was possessed by a ghost or other undead?

I would say so.

Incidentally, Council of Thieves #4 had a lot of stuff on possession, including special feats, ways of influencing others, avoiding detection, et cetera. It's a good resource for GMs who want to have a possession-type enemy. XD

Possession isn't control of the host's personality, though, it's control of the body by a different free mind. I agree that bluff vs. sense motive should work (per GM call), but it wouldn't be flat check against a low DC, you'd have to have specific interactions and beat the possessing creature's bluff. This should be modified for the actual interaction specifics, like if you asked him about something the possessing entity doesn't know but the host would, but note the possessor can mentally communicate with the host, so he could threaten the host into giving up some information. (Tell me the password or I'll jump off this cliff and wake up safe in my own body.)
