The two things I found interesting -

The hyperspace thing is recent. I got that impression from what was said before, but here it is clearly stated. So before the game it was pretty much the solar system, then recently the galaxy (and more) opened up.

The duration of the "Gap" is going to be interesting. Originally I felt it was like 50 or 100 year gap, and the interview basically thousands of years. Be interesting exactly how long, and how that plays out.

It initially sounded as if nobody knows (except all those people who need to travel between planets and can count orbital periods, so that wouldn't really work). If it's some period between the expiry limit of raise dead and the lifetime of an elf, the exact number of centuries still shouldn't really matter, except insofar as it gives the tiniest clues to what happened, which we have confirmed the Starfinder Society is trying to find out.

Agreed. That one just jumped out at me as it was very different from what I had been reading (right or wrong).

I like how they are going to be putting an emphasis on alien races become playable. I did like Spelljammer but at the same time I also liked Dragonstar.

Well this interview just killed a decent chuck of my interest since I don't want to have to get setting lore just to get new crunch. Might just get core at most.

The fact that Starfinder is a Campaign Setting first and foremost has been tacit since the announcement - the interview didn't really make that new.

It's been decided - those of us who want mechanics sans-Golariona will have to strip such out...

It being focused on being a setting =! each book being a gestalt of crunch and fluff and adventures.

Honestly Im alright with that. I tend to take the mechanics and adventures and whatever fluff seems useful. And it's not hard to file some serial numbers off.

If the fluff is off on its own corner then it'll be fine. I think is g cry can into the AP is just consolidating the lines. I wish they didn't because I don't desire every Player Companion, or every AP. It feels like the contents are holding each other hostage.

While from their wording they didn't quite confirm it, it sounds like magic items that just give bonuses are being thrown out in favour of just having them built into characters. If that's the case I'll be very happy!

I also like the prospect of having lots of races to play. I hope they don't go the route of level adjustments for some of them though.

I'm still trying to mentally grasp how such a long gap would affect society.

Is all information recorded during the gap gone, or (somehow) just the historical information?
Did new technologies come about during the gap? If so, do people remember how to use the new technologies, fix them if they break down, and make more?
If people set up a space colony somewhere during the gap, but were then forgotten about, it seems no one outside would know they even exist. Would they be able to survive?
For those who lived through the gap, do they (from their perspective) suddenly know how to use this technology, without knowing how they know? How much of a shock would it be to find that the entire world is suddenly different?

I'm imagining generations of people who now aren't even a memory; people that no one knew ever existed. That's sad. :-(

[I know, MST3K mantra, but still.]

Unless I am playing in PFS I don't give much regard to Golarion anyway. So far I see what they are doing and am encouraged about what is coming. I may step up and GM if and when they put in organized play. But I also like science fantasy space opera quite a bit.

Another thing I see coming out of this is far more use of the Race Builder. With more focus on trying to make Monster PC's more playable, I can see far more Custom races coming out of the woodwork.

There should be an 'Bumpy Forehead Alien' race. Just a race that picks three racial traits from a list and then a 'Hat'. Basically just something to make the universe way more open without having to individually make a race writeup and lore for every kind of alien you can think of. This way you can get past concepts like Klingons and Vulcans and save the real write-ups for the really weird races that either aren't humanoid or have some other extreme weird feature.

I am wondering whether archeologists and other scientists might have some sort of special insight into what happened during the Gap. Computer and written records are gone, as are the living memories of anyone born during the Gap, but physical evidence is much harder to eliminate.

For example, I am imagining that a group of interstellar explorers by chance comes across a colony of humans who speak a Golarion derived language. A physical examination of the spaceship they arrived on might reveal that it landed about 500 years ago after a journey of approximately 100 years -- thus revealing that some culture on Golarion was able to build and launch an interstellar spacecraft about 600 years ago. There might be a wide degree of uncertainty around that date of 600 years ago, but it would still be useful information about what was going on during the Gap.

Oooooh, I like that. And that is probably exactly what the Starfinder Society is looking for. Hard evidence.
