Ray a weapon or the Spell the weapon?

Rules Questions

So if I picked up Weapon Focus Ray. Does that count for both Ray of Frost and say Scorching Ray or would I have to pick up one for each?

Weapon focus ray should work with any spell that requires a ranged touch attack.

It only works for spells that call out that they produce a Ray, but it will work for all Ray spells. So you only need to take Weapon Focus (Ray) to benefit both Ray of Frost and Scorching Ray, but Acid Splash wouldn't be affected because, while it is a ranged touch spell, it isn't a Ray.

Weapon Focus (Ray) applies to any spell that specifically produces a ray. So, yes, it counts for both Ray of Frost and Scorching Ray (granting you a +1 to hit with those spells when making their ranged touch attacks).

EDIT: At least, that has been my understanding of Weapon Focus (Ray) all these years, haha.

yeah thats right. rays are a subset of a really fuzzily defined set of things called weapon-like spells (loosely you can say that this category includes anything that is the result of a spell but which requires some sort of attack roll). So Weapon Focus(Ray) will affect rays but not other weapon-like spells such as acid/flame/frost touch.

As i said its fuzzily "defined", all of the support for it comes from faq's. i made a list of them in another thread about the definition of a manufactured weapon.
