Nagaji Druid - Crocodile Farmer (farmstead vanity uses Handle Animal)

Characters with spellbooks - Craft Calligraphy (1 rank)

High-Wisdom characters - Profession Sailor (Pathfinders spend a lot of time on ships, might as well get paid for it)

If a skill is being bought just for day job rolls, I only put one rank in it.

I rarely pick one

Profession (erotic haiku author)

Dark Archive 5/5 5/55/5 *

Here's my list (maybe I have too many PCs?)

01) Paladin/Bard of Abadar (17.0) - While he has a caravan, he spends his free time managing his hair-cuttery, the Excellent Taste Salon

02) Pathfinder Delver (16.7) - card carrying Thieve's Guild member, so Sleight of Hand is how he makes his downtime cash.

03) Sorcerer/Hellknight Arminger (15) - owns Miss Chelzy's School of Dance & has a tattoo studio in the back.

04) Alchemist (10) - Craft Alchemy

05) Blackblade Magus (14) - Craft Weaponsmith

06) Monk (9.7) - Captains a ship named the Wave Dancer, so Profession: Sailor is her day Job of choice.

07) Inquisitor of Torag (13.7) - Profession engineer

08) Swashbuckler (9) - He teaches dueling, but Perform: Dance is the skill he uses.

09) Summoner (10.3) - He runs a ship named Penumbra, so Profession: Sailor.

10) Ninja (8) - He has a 1-gnome Kabuki show, so he uses Perform: Acting.

11) Fighter/Bard/Shadowdancer (9.3) - Perform: Dance

12) Barbarian/Oracle (9.7) - No Day Job - relies upon a Treasure Map for his extra cash.

13) Bard (10) - Perform: Sing, though he can fall back on Profession: Sailor if his voice gives out.

14) Cavelier (5) - who has time for a Day Job?

15) Slug Druid (3) - trying to breed giant slugs for intelligence is already a full time job - no time for distratctions.

16) Wizard (Necromancer) (10.3) - Craft: Glass Blowing, though his marriage into the Blakros family allows him to use Knowledge: Nobility too.

17) Kineticist (3) - Profession: Massusse

18) Summoner/Alchemist (6) - Craft: Alchemy

19) Ranger (5) - He's part of a Hunting Lodge, so he can use Survival as well as Profession: Guide.

31) Mesmer (2) - Perform: Sing

Spoiler:
Actually, it's part 3. Part 2 is "I'm on a boat." I don't think there's anything a PC with that profession could contribute to that issue, though.
The Exchange 3/5

My guys:

-1 Dwarven Fighter - Barkeep
-2 Human Paladin - Auditor
-3 Tengu Monk - Leather worker
-4 Half Elf Sorceress - Fortune Teller
-5 Human Magus - Cartographer
-6 Human Samurai - Craft: Calligraphy
-7 Human Barbarian – Craft: Bows
-8 Assimar Cleric - Astronomer
-9 Tengu Zen Archer - "Merchant"
-10 Wayang Witch - Jeweler
-11 Tiefling Alchemist - Alchemist
-12 Sylph (Life) Oracle - Librarian
-13 Oread Monk - Bodyguard
-14 Dwarven Rogue (CORE) - Teacher
-15 Kitsune Swashbuckler - Dancer
-16 Human Cleric (CORE)- Midwife
-17 Human Summoner - Doll Maker

I don't think I've ever put more than 1 skill point into a profession/craft/perform except for my alchemist.
I feel it adds to the character, it'll give me a little more gold and might, occasionally help in a scenario. That's well worth one skill point.

5/5 5/55/55/5

1 skill point gets you

1 rank
+3 trained (for everyobe but barbarians i think)
+ stat
+ circumstance bonuses

So +9ish. Then your next rank adds... +1. Not nearly as good of a deal

Grand Lodge 3/5

1 [Monk] Masseuse or Tai Chi Instructor- mostly to get enough to buy a boon item.
2 [Sorcerer] Nothing yet
3 [Alchemist] Craft Alchemy
4 [Druid] Too disgruntled with having to be in civilization to get a job.
5 [Shaman] Undecided, may opt for one of her parent's professions
6 [Swashbuckler/Ranger] May take Prof: Sailor.
7 [Bloodrager/Spiritualist] Craft: Gemcutting he's a Dwarf.
8 [U.Rogue/Warpriest] Current GM Blob, doubt she'll take a profession
9 [Fighter] If delving into the Emerald Spire isn't lucrative enough, he'll just go back home.
10 [Magus] In the making, probably a Poisoner as it's a Vishkanya.

Silver Crusade 2/5 * Venture-Agent, Florida—Longwood

1. Runs a Keep (boon in place of day job)
2. Story teller (Perform: Oratory)
3. Tattoo Artist (Craft: Tattoo)

5. Diplomat (Caravan Vanity)
6. Sailor (Profession: Sailor)
7. Chef (Profession: Cook....halfling what other profession)
8. Mercenary (Profession: Soldier)
9. Miner (Profession: Miner)
10. Herbalist (Profession: Herbalist)
11. Chef (Necromancer of Urgathoa)
12. "Monetary Re-distribution Agent" (Sleight of Hand, Thieve's Guild vanity)
13. Fortune Teller (Profession: Fortune-telling)
14. Comedian (Perform: Comedy)

I have more, but most of my characters have profession unless they are a specific ability score class that coincides with craft, profession, or perform, because I don't drop wisdom (plus Brevoy Bandit helps too.) Even my -1 before he got the boon had a day job. The main exception for this is my -2, he's a dwarven rogue so I modeled him off Varric from Dragon Age. The other exceptions are my necro (-11) and my arcane trickster (-12)

I agree; to mechanically optimize a character, this is probably the last thing to consider. And yet for me its usually the first. Its like an actor considering the motivations for the character. Here's what I've got:

01) Handle Animal + farmstead vanity + treesinger archetype = bonsai treant farmer (& Bellis logroller trait for added irony.)
02) Healer, Dead. (Now that's Irony!)
03) Profession (rigger) 1 + Profession (short order cook) 1 + Profession (fireman) 1 + Rough & Ready trait = migrant worker that can't seam to hold down any job for long
04) Profession (beekeeper) = mead supplies distributor
05) Craft (leather) + aasimar w/ scion of humanity = dragonhided (its a long story...)
06) Profession (driver) + Diplomacy + Caravan vanity + Anamist archetype (possession) = armored transport courier
07) Profession (courtesan) + wayang witch + some masterwork tools & ride feat tree for extra bondage flavor = marriage counselor
08) Perform (oratory) + airship captain trait + Linguistics: Vercites = lecturer on “My Life on Verces' Skydock before I Shattered Space-Time”
09) Perform (dance) -> Shadowdancer. Me no got skill, but me can dance.".
10) Stillborn
11) Bard + Perform (sing) = lyrical chronicler
12) Disguise + Bluff + Dark Archive + Kitsune Paladin of Kelinahat = Undercover agent (technically doesn't do day job checks; "The truth is payment enough.")
13) Perform (buffoonery) = court idiot
14) Sleight of hand + thieves' guild membership vanity + warpriest of Ng the Hooded =/= “handyman”

-3: Caravan vanity with Intimidate. This big, dumb (but kind hearted) bloodrager attends important business meetings looking scary.
-4: Knowledge (Local) - Uses his connections with the Sovereign Court and the Pathfinder Society to match people to information. Sometimes they want the information, sometimes they want to make sure the information does not get out.
-5: Dead before first level.
-6: This is is currently being planned - Paladin of Abadar will spend all his prestige on business/properties. He will be doing his part to keep people employed as long as he is not loosing money. Main source of day job income Diplomacy with Caravan and Property Broker vanities.

My characters have the following professions:

1. Perform (sing) - Bard

4. Craft (painting) - Wizard, figured he'd want something relaxing to do when not adventuring or studying his spellbooks
5. Craft (alchemy) - Alchemist
6. None - Cleric with Int 8, so I needed the points elsewhere
7. Profession (gambler) - Human rogue. Uses the cheater's version of the gambling kit, so this could alternatively be called Profession (con man)
8. None - Hunter, didn't seem to fit with the character
9. Profession (merchant) - Human slayer, figured someone in The Exchange should at least have one rank in it
10. None - Wayang arcanist, doesn't want to divert the time from his immortality research

I have a handful of interesting ones.

-1: Owns and negotiates for a Druman Caravan (Diplomacy, Stock Certificate) and invests all his earnings back into the company. The smooth talker can take 10 to hit 300 gold and he has a payout of about 15000 gold ahead of him.

-2: Steals from the rich (sleight of hand) and gives to himself.

-3: Work?! That's what the servants do.

-6: I'm the adventure captin of the moon and head-mister of the acadamiry, I don't have time for that!

-9: craft alchemy, as a gunslinger

-10: Perform:Power Ballad as the lead singer of DYRE WÜLF, Absalom's hardest adamantine metal band

-20: Profesion:Barrister as a surly fighter/rogue, because that team really needed good legal representation.

-26: Craft: Alchemy because Ratfolk Arcanists are really good at it.

-27: This Love-specialist Thassilonian Enchanter used Craft: Erotic Sculpture for a while but now spends his time schmoozing around Absalom's high society as husband of Marsha Blakros with Knowledge: Nobility.

-2: Profession Barrister, Seems like something that members of the faith of Asmodeus should have
-3: Perform (multiple options) because bards are great at that stuff and versatile performance is sweet

-6: None, He's a full time Pathfinder
-7: None, not enough SKill points
-8: Craft Alchemy, see -1 for reasons

-3 Roulette (kitsune aetherkineticist): "Um, I used to be a thief. I wasn't very good at it. I became a gambler! I wasn't good at that either. I've been kicked out of a few casinos 'cause of my 'good luck.'"

-4 El Oso (human brawler/vigilante): "Defeating evil is a full time job when you're EL OSO THE SPIRIT OF ANDORAN."

-5 Angela (human spiritualist): "I was just a simple librarian in Absalom. Then, the grim reaper showed up and made me go adventuring."

-6 Hiroko (ifrit pyrokinetic knight): "I am an exiled soldier for the Karen Clan, working to regain honor in the eyes of my lord."

-7 Sir Pius (human occultist paladin of Aroden): "I work as a priest for Aroden, spreading hope and justice throughout the Inner Sea."

-8 Professor Pavel (human arcanist): "Hm, day-what-now? Sorry, I was talking to Rupert. What were you saying?"

-9 Kaguya (kitsune chaokineticist): "I will not sully the name of the Kosan Clan by lowering myself to the likes of a peasant, performing menial labor as a means of scrambling for small bits of coi--don't give me that look, Shimizu!"

-10 Sleight (human card caster): "Technically, I am a gambler. But I am so much more than that. Traveler, fortune teller, scholar, dreamer seeking fortune, thrills, and the lost loves of my life."

-11 Amestra (ifrit bloodrager/rogue): "I was a dancer. A simple entertainer in a pesh parlor. Turned out one of my patrons was a genie. He offered to grant me a wish. I wished I was a radiant beauty so I could elevate my status beyond a simple entertainer in a pesh parlor. Now I turn into a lady made of fire. Not quite what I expected."

-13 Cosmo (human vigilante): "Do you not know who I am? I am COSMO THE MAGNIFICENT, capturing the hearts and imaginations of people across all over. Entertainer. Magician -- wait, con man? Don't be absurd!"

-16 Chel (merfolk aquakineticist): "A profession? What's that? Oh, I don't have one yet. I was just a slave. You mean Pathfinder Society isn't a day job?"

Dark Archive 4/5 *** Venture-Lieutenant, Finland—Turku

one of my characters has Profession: Adventurer and he keeps bragging about how he's a professional and everybody else in the party is just an amateur >.>
So, between the adventures, he... Adventures some more. It's a shame that free-lance adventuring doesn't pay as much as society does.

Oh, this is back! Fun. In addition to those near the bottom of page one:

14) The Overrunner is a Professional Soldier when called upon. But his acquaintance Dorf of the Great Tusk Shoanti tribe is a dairy farmer. (That hides an earthbreaker in his butter churn)
18) Gunslinger/Swashbuckler/Rogue wound up dabbling in Craft Alchemy (getting into the poison side of things now)
21) The Rocketeer uses his chainsaw for Profession Woodcutter (ok, he mostly uses a regular axe for that, as otherwise it would take too many charges)
22) Ionnia Rodiani, Paladin of Soralyon, crafts sculptures of Princess Eutropia but gets more money as a tattoo artist.
23) Tarulata, warpriest of Omrataji (god of silver) is a professional Miner (of silver)
24) While Apodora (Lillend Azata Eidolon) is a decent performer, celestial laws prevent her from earning money from it. Her partner however, attempts to be a painter. He's amazing at coming up with new colors and patterns for her scales every time he summons her, but rather poor at putting it to canvas. (Level 8 with only 8 skill points can't spare much)
25) Wirni the Witch is trying to change professions. She is well known for her sculptures and tattoos, but is trying to become a bit of a life coach and get money through magic. She offers Harrowings and Revenant Armor for reasonable prices, but her big ticket is Possession. She'll offer Riding Possession so she can be an extra set of eyes as you go about your day, or Marionette Possession if you want her to take the wheels and use her knowledge skills for that important meeting or test you didn't study for. This business model has been slow to take off though.
26) Palakar (Naiad) got her start giving motivational speaches to the woodcutters in Macridi. Now she's got her own theater in Absalom and her oratory draws a much bigger crowd. She's also trained in many other performance types and does know the basics of woodcutting.
27) Ambix (Wyrwood) is all over Craft Alchemy
28) Aislong (Mermaid) would be a poor mermaid if she couldn't sing. Though she's not that invested in it.
29) Literal GM blob (oozemorph shifter)
30) GM blob
31) Core GM Blob

I don't recall all the dash-numbers off hand, but class is more relevant anyway:

* Rogue: Profession (brewer), because he started with Fortified Drinker and later dipped a level of cleric of Cayden. It was actually useful in a couple adventures!
* Stonelord Paladin: Craft (stonemason), but picked up a rank of Profession (soldier) following a "boot camp" scenario early in his career.
* Inquistor of Gorum: Profession (soldier).
* Brawler: Profession (scribe). He's Osiriani, temple-trained, and a Pathfinder, so that was a no-brainer.
* Sorcerer: Has a rank of Perform (dance), but is currently forgoing his downtime to improve his noble standing (gained via a boon). Eventually he will get to make day job checks using Knowledge (nobility).
* Witch: Profession (merchant). My Exchange character.
* Shaman: Profession (fortune-teller). It fit nicely with his Heavens spirit, so I've been camping this up in-character: he wears robes covered in stars and astrological signs to advertise his role, has tattoos to match, and offers to "read the stars" when interacting with NPCs. It started as a joke, but he now has the best day job check of all my PCs! (Plus the Extra Hours boon!)
* Cavalier: Predictably, Profession (groom).
* Druid: Profession (sailor). Mostly because it occasionally comes up in adventures, but nobody ever takes it.
* Investigator: Craft (alchemy) and Profession (scribe), and will pick up a rank of barrister when he gets to 2nd level. Assistant to my wife's Asmodeus cleric, who *is* a barrister.
* Cleric of Callistra: Profession (courtesan). Built for a home game, with all PCs being Core Campaign clerics. Amusingly, not the only PC in that group with this day job! (The other serves Shelyn.)
