Kintargo City Stat Block Seems Incorrect.

Hell's Rebels

I am very new at using the settlement stat blocks, so my information may be incorrect.

The Book has Kintargo's stats listed as

Corruption +0; Crime –2; Economy –1; Law +4; Lore +0; Society –2
Qualities academic, cultured, defiant, rumormongering citizens, strategic location
Danger +20; Disadvantage martial law

I can not figure out how they calculated that.

Corruption = +2 (+2 Overlord)
Crime = -1 (+1 Chaotic, -2 Overlord)
Economy = +1 (+1 Strategic Location)
Law = 0 (+2 Overlord, -1 Cultured, -1 Defiant)
Lore = +2 (+1 Academic, +1 Rumormongering Citizens)
Society = +2 (+1 Good, -2 Overlord, +1 Cultured, +1 Defiant, -1 Rumormongering Citizens)

Even if you apply martial Law that only gets:

Corruption = -2 (+2 Overlord)
Crime = -3 (+1 Chaotic, -2 Overlord)
Economy = -3 (+1 Strategic Location)
Law = +2 (+2 Overlord, -1 Cultured, -1 Defiant)
Lore = -2 (+1 Academic, +1 Rumormongering Citizens)
Society = -2 (+1 Good, -2 Overlord, +1 Cultured, +1 Defiant, -1 Rumormongering Citizens)

What am I missing?

The only number in the stat block that seems off to me is Crime, which seems like it should be -1 instead of -2. I'm not getting anything you are, though.

Large city: +2 all
--
+2 Corruption, +2 Crime, +2 Economy, +2 Law, +2 Lore, +2 Society

Chaotic good: +1 Crime, +1 Society
--
+2 Corruption, +3 Crime, +2 Economy, +2 Law, +2 Lore, +3 Society

Overlord: +2 Corruption, -2 Crime, +2 Law, -2 Society
--
+4 Corruption, +1 Crime, +2 Economy, +4 Law, +2 Lore, +1 Society

Academic: +1 Lore
--
+4 Corruption, +1 Crime, +2 Economy, +4 Law, +3 Lore, +1 Society

Cultured: -1 Law, +1 Society
--
+4 Corruption, +1 Crime, +2 Economy, +3 Law, +3 Lore, +2 Society

Defiant: -1 Law, +1 Society
--
+4 Corruption, +1 Crime, +2 Economy, +2 Law, +3 Lore, +3 Society

Rumormongering Citizens: +1 Lore, -1 Society
--
+4 Corruption, +1 Crime, +2 Economy, +2 Law, +4 Lore, +2 Society

Strategic Location: +1 Economy
--
+4 Corruption, +1 Crime, +3 Economy, +2 Law, +4 Lore, +2 Society

Martial Law: -4 Corruption, -2 Crime, -4 Economy, +2 Law, -4 Lore, -4 Society, +10 Danger
--
+0 Corruption, -1 Crime, -1 Economy, +4 Law, +0 Lore, -2 Society

Stat block line is
+0 Corruption, -2 Crime, -1 Economy, +4 Law, +0 Lore, -2 Society

AHA! I was not doing +2 because of the Large size. That fixes everything except crime as you said. Thank you very much!

As a large city, Kintargo starts out with +2 in every settlement stat:

KINTARGO (BASE):

Corruption +2
Crime +2
Economy +2
Law +2
Lore +2
Society +2

Kintargo's Chaotic Good alignment grants it +1 to both Crime and Society:

KINTARGO (BASE AND ALIGNMENT):

Corruption +2
Crime +3
Economy +2
Law +2
Lore +2
Society +3

Barzillai Thrune is an Overlord, granting Kintargo +2 in Corruption and Law, and -2 in Crime and Society:

KINTARGO (BASE, ALIGNMENT, AND GOVERNMENT):

Corruption +4
Crime +1
Economy +2
Law +4
Lore +2
Society +1

In addition to its base stats, Kintargo's size grants it 5 settlement qualities. Academic grants it +1 Lore, Cultured grants it +1 Society and -1 Law, Defiant grants it +1 Society and -1 Law, Rumormongering Citizens grants it Lore +1 and Society -1, and Strategic Loccation grants it Economy +1:

KINTARGO (BASE, ALIGNMENT, GOVERNMENT, AND QUALITIES):

Corruption +4
Crime +1
Economy +3
Law +2
Lore +4
Society +2

Finally, the Martial Law disadvantage grants Kintargo Corruption -4, Crime -2, Economy -4, Law +2, Lore -4, and Society -4:

KINTARGO (BASE, ALIGNMENT, GOVERNMENT, QUALITIES, AND DISADVANTAGES):

Corruption +0
Crime -1
Economy -1
Law +4
Lore +0
Society -2

Compare these stats to the stats printed in In Hell's Bright Shadow:

KINTARGO (IN HELL'S BRIGHT SHADOW):

Corruption +0
Crime -2
Economy -1
Law +4
Lore +0
Society -2

The printed stats are in line with the derived stats, except that Kintargo's printed stats reduced its Crime by an additional point. I have been unable to find out how.

To extend the exercise a little bit, compare Kintargo's un-disadvantaged derived stats (its government changes to Autocracy) to its stats as printed in The Kintargo Contract:

KINTARGO (BASE, ALIGNMENT, GOVERNMENT, AND QUALITIES):

Corruption +2
Crime +3
Economy +3
Law +0
Lore +4
Society +4

KINTARGO (THE KINTARGO CONTRACT):

Corruption +2
Crime +3
Economy +3
Law +0
Lore +4
Society +4

The derived and printed stats are exactly the same. This leads me to believe the derived stats are correct, and the stats printed in In Hell's Bright Shadow are wrong.

. . . and I seem to have been ninja'd.

Perhaps there is an ad hoc adjustment of -1 crime, because as of the start of book 1, a large amount of would-be pot-stirrers have been killed/captured/driven into hiding?

You'd think that'd have been mentioned, though, or that it would be represented by the Martial Law disadvantage.

Maybe the disadvantage granted a -3 to Crime at some point, and it was changed?

Vyre's stat block is wrong too. Its printed scores are:

Corruption +0; Crime +4; Economy +4; Law –1; Lore +1; Society +6

They should be:

Corruption +0; Crime +4; Economy +4; Law –1; Lore +0; Society +7

It looks like the modifiers of the No Questions Asked settlement quality, despite the quality being listed in the Qualities section and detailed at the end of the stat block, were never computed. Every other aspect of the statblock is correct.

Besides Kintargo and Vyre, there are several small towns in Ravounel. Acisazi gets a (correct!) statblock in Dance of the Damned. Deepmar Penal Colony gets a (incorrect) statblock in No Response from Deepmar. Cypress Point and the Kitkasiticka village have their populations listed in The Kintargo Contract, but not their whole stats. Whiterock apparently exists, and is probably no bigger than Cypress Point, but is never mentioned apart from the map of Ravounel in The Kintargo Contract.
