1 round cast time and swift actions

Rules Questions

This question came up in a game over the weekend - if you cast Summon Monster, do you also get to use a swift action on your turn? The player wasn't sure if a 1 round cast time made him "locked out" of other actions.

I ruled he could just do the swift before he started casting the spell, but I wasn't able to find anything explicit in the rules. I assume a 1 round cast time falls into the "full round action" box of the 6 types of actions mentioned in the CRB?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

A 1 round action is longer than a full round action, kind of.

A 1 round action starts on your turn, and continues until right before the start of your next turn.

Quote:

A spell that takes one round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed.

A spell that takes 1 minute to cast comes into effect just before your turn 1 minute later (and for each of those 10 rounds, you are casting a spell as a full-round action). These actions must be consecutive and uninterrupted, or the spell automatically fails.

When you begin a spell that takes 1 round or longer to cast, you must continue the invocations, gestures, and concentration from 1 round to just before your turn in the next round (at least). If you lose concentration after starting the spell and before it is complete, you lose the spell.

You only provoke attacks of opportunity when you begin casting a spell, even though you might continue casting for at least 1 full round. While casting a spell, you don't threaten any squares around you.

This action is otherwise identical to the cast a spell action described under Standard Actions.

Based upon the rules though for action economy it uses up a full round action which should leave the swift available. Assuming you take the swift action before beginning casting the spell you should be fine.

If you are trying to cast another spell as a swift action after having already begun casting the 1 round spell you will not be able to do so because you are already concentrating on casting the 1 round spell. But as long as you can cast the swift action spell before you're fine.

Sovereign Court

The 1-round casting doesn't block swift actions per se. You can definitely do them before. Some swift and free actions could even be done "during", but only if they don't conflict with the actions needed to cast your big spell.

For example, if you're casting a V,S spell, you can't talk as a free action, because "you have your mouth full". You also couldn't use a Swift spell-like action, because that requires concentration, which you're already using on your big spell.

You might be able to drop prone as a free action, but then you'll probably need to make a concentration check for violent motion to keep casting your big spell.
