GM ShadowLord's GIANTSLAYER [Closed Recruitment]

Recruitment

This a recruitment thread for the Giantslayer Adventure Path. Currently the recruitment is private for a select group. Once they have completed their characters I will open a new recruitment to fill the party up to six players.

I seek players who enjoy the RP more than the crunch. If something in my creation rules is really going against what you want I'm open to hearing your thoughts but reserve the right to deny it if I feel like it's going to unbalance the game.

We will use forum-standard of a post per day on the weekdays and ask notice if you will be unavailable for an extended period of time.

ABILITY SCORES:
• The point buy for abilities will vary depending on how "powerful" your race is. The breakdown for point buy is below, consult the race section for additional details.
• 25 point buy for all allowed races that are 7 RP and under.
• 20 point buy for all allowed races that are 8 - 11 RP
• 15 point buy for all allowed races that are 12 - 15 RP.
• No stats below 8 or higher than 18 before racial modifiers.
• If you are dumping a stat I fully expect you to RP your character to be lacking that ability.

CLASSES:
• Most Paizo-Published Classes and Archetypes permitted.
• One Archetype per Class.
• Playtest characters allowed under the agreement you will accept changes to the classes that Paizo finalizes when they go final.
• If you intend to play Paladin, I expect strict adherence to alignment and decision making.
• Witches are allowed, but Slumber Hex is not allowed.
• The following classes are not allowed: Gunslinger, Summoner, Samurai.

FEATS:
• Most Paizo-published feats are permitted, no third party feats allowed.
• One free Story Feat
• Banned Feats: Leadership & Antagonize.
• Crafting is allowed, but any custom gear requires GM approval.

RACES:
• Core, Featured and Uncommon races 15RP and under will be allowed. Table. Breakdown.
Core [Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Half-Elves, Half-Orcs, Halflings, Humans]
Featured[Aasimars, Catfolk, Dhampirs, Drow, Ifrits, Oreads, Ratfolk, Sylphs, Tengus, Tieflings, Undines]
Uncommon[Changelings, Duergar, Gillmen, Gripplis, Kitsune, Merfolk, Nagaji, Samsarans, Strix, Vanaras, Vishkanyas, Wayangs]

TRAITS:
• Two traits total from Paizo-published sources, one of which must be a Giantslayer campaign trait (Found in Player's Guide).
• You may optionally take a drawback to add a third trait.

SKILLS::
• 1 extra skill point per level to be used on Craft, Profession, or Perform (not Perform for Bards)
• We will be using the Background Skills system from Unchained.

GOLD:
• Max gold for your class

HIT POINTS:
• Max per Hit Dice at level one, 1/2 HD + 1 thereafter.

ALIGNMENT:
• Good Alignment preferred. I'm not hung up on Lawful vs. Chaotic. If you want to play Chaotic Neutral you will have to convince me why you shouldn't be spending time in a padded cell instead of adventuring.
• No Evil alignments.

RELIGION:
• Characters may worship any deity but must be within one step of their alignment.

OTHER STUFF :
XP: The group will level up at the same time based on when I feel it is appropriate within the campaign. I will not be handing out XP individually for encounters.
HERO POINTS: We will be playing with Hero Points.
• We will be using critical hit and fumble tables with some custom rules. I'll post the rules for these in the campaign area once we are underway. To get an idea of what they are like you can see a generator here.

FLUFF & STUFF:
• A background and description will be required.

DESCRIPTION:
A physical description will allow you and the other party members to visualize your character.

BACKGROUND:
A character background will allow me to RP with your character a little better, understand their motives, and even tailor hints or dialogue to them specifically. I will look upon those characters with a detailed background more favorably than those with two lines of "I was born, my parents were killed, I was an orphan, I want to kill things for revenge". Be creative!

I've listed out a series of questions or thoughts that you do not need to fill out verbatim, but instead of listed to help you build a history items.

• There is some great information available in the Giantslayer Player's Guide on the surrounding area.
• If you're playing as a common race, how do you view other, rarer races? If you're playing as an uncommon race, how did you come to live among the common?
• What will your character contribute to the party in and out of battle?
• What goals/aspirations does your character have? These don't always need to be lofty or noble.
• What is my role in town? Am I settled there, or just passing through? How do I make a living? (Good examples include Craft skills, occupations listed under Profession, or as an unskilled laborer.) Is this a family business or trade, or am I doing something new? How long have I been doing this in Heldren?
• Did I inherit my equipment / receive it as a gift? Did I save up to purchase it? Did I steal it / steal to get it? Did I kill for it?
• How are the Traits that I have a part of my story? What training or experiences have I undergone to get the Skills, Feats and Class Features that make me good at what I do?
• How strongly do I live out my alignment? Am I a constant beacon of good/evil/law/chaos? Or am I more surreptitious about my moral choices? What are my religious commitments, and how do these shape me?

Silver Crusade

You say that featured races are allowed, but don't list goblins in your more specific list. I've made a goblin cleric of Sarenrae. He tries very hard to be good, but still loves fire. Would you allow him? (NG alignment)

If you want more details, I can post his alias. It already has his personality, although I would have to redo the mechanics to your specifications. He has been rejected several times, but I really love the little guy.

By the way, if you allow him, he's going for the Dawnflower Dervish feat, which requires ranks in Perform(Dance). Am I allowed to use a background skill point for this? It feels a little like cheating.

Sure, goblins are allowed. Really any race under 15 RP is allowed, I'm just listing some as exmples. They are 10 RP putting you at 20 point buy,

I'm fine with you using the free perform in that, no worries.

Silver Crusade

How useful is climb going to be? There's an alternate racial trait called cave crawler that gives a goblin a climb speed in exchange for fast movement. I'm having to have a strength of 8 after racial modifiers, so I'm seriously considering this, if the players guide is accurate about climb being important.

There are obviously always ways to avoid using a certain skill in place of others, but you should be prepared to handle numerous climb checks in the first book should the situation arise.

Here's Redelia's character. He's a little weak mechanically until he can take Dawnflower Dervish at level 3, then his melee skills with the scimitar suddenly all come together. He still needs a story feat, I'm really struggling to come up with one that fits him.

At present I'm putting together a Giant-blooded, full Orc Druid (Goliath druid). Ironically the runt of his litter, Brolga suffered extensive physical abuse growing up due to his blue tinged skins and other giantish features (something his 4 brothers and 2 sisters lacked).

If this is permissible, I'll have stat blocks up for you tonight. I was going to take an animal companion for Brolga, but Goliath Druid require it either be a megafauna or
Dinosaur. Is there anything that you think would be most appropriate based on location GM?

I have an idea for a character but needs some approval first. I want to play a Half Giant which is a 3PP from dreamscarred press but different. This one is psionic and I don't want to play one. This is a modified half-giant based on type of giant. I want to use the hill giant.

The idea is to play a gentle giant that isn't so gentle when bad men do bad things. Something like Baymax or the Iron Giant. He is actually scarred of fighting but he will defend innocence with savage strength and is prone to grabbing the nearest object or enemy to pummel his foes (Catch off Guard, Grapple, Body Bludgein, etc). I will be tanking his Int, since he isn't bright but RPing that. Every now and then he has moments of insight that surprise people though. His adopted father was paladin and tried to teach him the paladin code in a way he would understand. So when the half giant does speak he usually starts with "Pa always said".

I have no idea what the RP points on the half-hill giant is but I bet it is pretty high seeing as it gets a lot of stuff. He will probably overpowered comparatively but won't utilize a lot of his abilities unless someone or something he cares for is threatened.

Garri - Did a quick skim, looks good. Don't forget to turn on Hero Points or add them in.

NerdOfTheYear - I'm not finished going through the chapter yet, I've just started reading it today in fact. I'm not terribly sure if one matters more than the other yet so I'd say just pick whichever you prefer. If I feel different after getting through the chapter I'll definitely let you know.

Zayne - Hang on for a bit, this is still closed recruitment until a few players work out there characters. Once they finish up I'll open it up to the public. I took a look at your links and while it looks interesting I don't have a breakdown of the RP associated with it and would prefer to keep things within the boundaries of what I can calculate to keep it somewhat balanced. If you can breakdown the RP for me and it's within the boundaries I'll consider it.

Just going through and reading the Story feats. Apotheosis is amazingly flavourful, and I'm very tempted to shape my character backstory around that. Who doesn't want to see the adventures of the future God of Outcasts, Wanderers and Rejection.

Yeah, the story feats can be pretty epic.

Ok, here is the crunch for Brolga. I ended up dipping out of the Goliath Druid into the Titan Mauler Barbarian, because it fit what I wanted to do better. I have a mental idea for the full backstory for the character, but I'm going to leave that for tomorrow to work on (it's this pathfinder's bedtime).

However, some cliff notes:
- Brolga is a half-orc who was raised by orcs for the early part of his life. He was the runt of the litter, and also showed signs of giant heritage: slightly blue skin, well build arms despite his runtish (by orc standards) frame. Because of this he was picked on terribly.
- Brolga eventually fled into the wilderness, and learned to fend for himself.
- He had some kind of interaction with Ashava (goddess of - amongst other things - the lost and lonely), and given that Ashava was the first entity he ever interacted with who treated him as an equal (STORY FEAT) it shaped him to be an ardent worshipper of her.
- Brolga eventually made his way to Trunau, where he has made a living as a reclusive woodcutter.

GM ShadowLord I really like your creation rules, it's refreshing to see GM at least take an interest in other races so you don't see a party of mostly humans with an elf or halfling thrown in.

I'll be reading everything submission and look forward to you opening this up and posting a charter!

My characters are starting to feel too alike. Would you let me remake Garri as a ecclesitheurge? If so, I need to ask about a few grey areas in the rules that make a big difference in the viability of this.

1. Armor ban: In your interpretation, can an ecclesitheurge still use items like bracers of armor?

2. Can a cleric use a wand of a domain spell? In particular, I want to be able to (when rich enough) use a wand of fire attack spells to be able to do stuff every round if I can't get into melee.

Brogla - Looks good, I like this path better than the other.

Ictoo - Thanks! I tried to come up with something somehwat balanced to allow players some flexibility to go a little outside the norm.

Garri - Remake it however you like. It seems to me that this is a sensitive issue that could be construed in either way. It seems to me the intent of this is disallow any use of any armor at all. If your concept comes down to whether or not you're allowed to wear bracers of armor and only that, I'll say that it's fine.

I'm not sure if I'm following your second question about the wands correctly. Are you asking if you can use a want to cast a fire spell that is in your list or not in your list? Either way the answer the answer is yes, but the latter would require making UMD checks. Although I see you can change your domain around, I'm not sure if that's tied into your question or I'm not following.

Since we know that recruitment is only locked to Garri and Brolga, I'm planning on opening the full recruitment today.

Shadowlord, I look forward to it opening up. I am hoping to get into a game again and I did a similar character creation for my Rappan Athuk game (Added RP and Point buy together).

In terms of the armor ban, can I suggest a very flavorful compromise? A character that can never use any AC boosting item is going to be as squishy as jello. The flavor in the class description is 'a vow to only be protected by his faith.' Could we say that in this game, Garri can only wear AC boosting items that he or another cleric of Sarenrae crafts? That way, he can get the items, but it's his faith that provides the necessary spells to make them. I'm not thinking so much about bracers of armor as an amulet of natural armor or a ring of protection.

For the wand question, what I'm asking if you consider domain spells to be on his spell list. There seem to be debates about this.

GM Blood - I'll start working on it at lunchtime today.

Garri - As long as people aren't trying to pull mechanics to make their character OP, I'm perfectly fine hand waving things in favor of flavor. Your explanation works perfectly for me, approved.

Ah, ok I follow you now. This one seems a little more complicated, can you point me to a thread of discussion where I can look at what's been discussed previously to save me some research time?

Here's one thread with the discussion on Paizo's forums. I know that the ecclesitheurge's ability to swap domains makes it more complicated, but what I really care about is fire wands, which will be Garri's primary domain.

Thanks, I'll check it out and get back to you.

I just can't get the image out of my head of this crazy little goblin leaping at evil with a flaming scimitar. I'm going to keep Garri as working towards Dawnflower Dervish (i.e. no ecclesitheurge) and instead change Kessa away from dex. I do still want to know about the fire wands, though.

I think Garri is done, because I just gave him his story feat. I chose 'Prophet.' I already had it in mind that Garri really wanted to convert other goblins to The Lady, or at least to good.

We're going to wind up with a surprisingly pious party of Giantslayer it seems :P

Ha. We'll see about that, you only represent 1/3. I'm sure we'll have plenty of drooling to compensate.

But we don't have a divine caster yet, so that brings us to 50%. Unless our caster is a divine cleric of Rahadoum, his atheistic zeal providing cure light wounds.

pssssssssst:
Someone should do that.

Have you warned the poor hobgoblin that if he's accepted, he might be the target of all Garri's proselyztizing?

edit: just realized after I posted that it might not be clear that I was joking.

Hey, if it encourages more banter and roleplay than I'm all for it :D
