Very Basic Rules Question

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Ok, i am not very good at understanding rules from a rulebook, especially when they are in confusing order.

I have a few very basic questions about the game.

The 30 Blessings on the table that you flip every turn.

Are they just a measure of counting down how many turns you have until you lose? Or do they have any ACTIVE effect? Do i need to invoke them? I really dont understand what they are supposed to do.

Also check numbers. Lets take the Acolyte as an example. it has 4 skills in the checkbox and a number, i think 6. Do i need to roll ALL 4 of the skills to gain him? or just one of them? If i dont HAVE the skills do i just use the corresponding attribute?

Those are the two most important questions i currently have, but im sure more will pop up as i play the game.

The blessings deck is indeed mainly a countdown. Occasionally, certain cards care what card is the top card of the blessings deck discard pile, such as Blessing of the Gods, or lycanthrope monsters. However, you never play the cards from the blessings deck, or acquire them.

When a card lists several skills in the check to acquire, you need to make one of these checks, and you can choose which one you try. You can only try one of them, though. If you do not have a skill, you can still try a check, but you use a d4 then.

1) The blessings are 99% just a timer, and you won't be using their powers. Note, however, that most (if not all) deity's blessings have a power that lets you recharge them instead of discard when you play them if that same blessing is on the top of the timer discard pile. Some scenarios will have you add other cards to the timer deck, but they'll explain how it works on the card.

2) You pick one of the listed skills. That might be listed on your card, it might not. Very few cards don't have at least one the six skills that every character has (Str/Dex/Con/Int/Wis/Cha). If you choose one that isn't on your character card, you use a d4. Note that if a card lists only Intelligence and Arcane, you can use Arcane even if it is based on a skill other than Intelligence (example, sorcerors and bards base Arcane on their Charisma).

Also, it doesn't matter what a skill is usually based on. It doesn't matter that every character with Knowledge bases it on Intelligence, if you don't have it on your card, you can use it but it is not an Intelligence check like it would be if your character had Knowledge: Intelligence + X

On page 12 of the current rulebook that came with Wrath of the Righteous:

Determine Which Skill You’re Using. Cards that require a check specify the skill or skills you can use to attempt the check. Each check to defeat or acquire a card lists one or more skills; you may choose any of the listed skills for your check. For example, if a check lists Dexterity, Disable, Strength, and Melee, you may use any one of those skills to attempt your check. Even if your character doesn’t have any of the skills listed for a check, you can still attempt the check, but your die is a d4.

You only have to attempt one of them per this paragraph. And that last sentence specifies that if you don't have the specific skill, you can still make an attempt with a d4. i.e. If something requires a Stealth skill check but don't have the skill, you cannot simply use Dexterity unless it says "Stealth or Dexterity". But you can use a d4 for your unskilled Stealth check.

Just to build on what was already explained by our dear friends:

Skills DO NOT have a corresponding attribute in the sense you imply.

For example, if you have a card that list the corresponding to aquire (or defeat):
Wisdom / Divine 7 or Ranged / Craft 8
Then you must try one of the 4 (Wisdom, Divine, Ranged, Craft)

As stated earlier, usually there is at least one that you are sure to have on your character sheet (in this case Wisdom)

Even if none is present in your character sheet, you can always select one (e. g.: Craft) and act as if you add Craft : d4 on your character sheet. Meaning you could play a card giving you +1d8 on craft and a blessing that would give you another d4 (since the base die for that check is d4) for a total of d8+2d4 to roll 8.
But you cannot benefit from a card that would increase your Dexterity (for example) because Craft IS NOT "by default" based on Dexterity (that's what i meant by Skills DO NOT have a corresponding attribute).

Now say you have Charisma: d8 and Divine=Charisma+2 on your character sheet. You could select Divine for your check (starting at d8+2) and in this case both a card that would give you +3 in Charisma and another than would add d4 to your Divine could be played to move your dice to d8+d4+5 (providing both cards aren't of the same type and played by the same character), ensuring you roll 7 minimum. In this case blessings (played by different characters) would add by default 1d8 each.
But if you do not have Divine as a skill and decide to anyway roll on Divine because you have an Ally to play giving you +1d6 on a divine check, then indeed you get d6+d4 and you can add d4s with blessings, but cards improving your Wisdom or Charisma or anything else than Divine won't help because skills "by default" DO NOT have a corresponding attribute.
Easy way to remember that: Wizards have Arcane=Intelligence+X, sorcerers have Arcane=Charisma+X, so definitively a skill (in this case Arcane) never has a "preferred" attribute for whatever reason.
