New wizards and additional resource books question

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

Okay, I admit I haven't actually made a wizard since 2nd edition AD&D. So I had to read up on them to determine how many spells they start with. But now I have a question.

Does a newly created wizard start with all zero level spells from any and all books the campaign is allowing, or just the zero level spells from the core rule book?

Ask your GM.

As written, the class description says 'all' without any restrictions; however there are a lot more now than when those words were written. It wouldn't be out of order for a GM to limit the total number, or limit it to core rulebook only.

You're telling me, just from the books I've bought so far that's 28 level 0 spells. Or over a quarter of your initial 100 page spell book.

Starting Spells (See Spellbooks below): A wizard begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level wizard spells (except those from his opposed schools, if any; see Arcane Schools) plus three 1st-level spells of his choice. The wizard also selects a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to his Intelligence modifier to add to the spellbook. At each new wizard level, he gains two new spells of any spell level or levels that he can cast (based on his new wizard level) for his spellbook. At any time, a wizard can also add spells found in other wizards' spellbooks to his own (see Magic).

Yes, all 0-level spells. But ask your GM. Or ask for a bigger starting spellbook...or simply don't take them all, to leave more room in the book.
