RP about a Human Changing into a Half-Dragon ?

Advice

Hello everyone, i'm a Master and i have a lack of knowledge about dragon. Let me explain. I have a player who want to become a half-dragon for Rp reasons, and he asked Hrp if he can become a half dragon even if his character is already a lvl 12 Wizard ( he want to become a half-dragon cause his character fell in love with a dragon and it was the same for the dragon, and he want to become half-dragon to have his life extend, to have the same lifespawn of the dragon or a little less ).

So my questions, i've read that humanoid can become half-dragon by complex ritual if they have a dragon who can vow for them, so i wanted to know how this ritual functions or if it's impossible for him. Since everything can be done by magic and ritual i though it can be possible , and didn't answer yet to him, to try to find a way.

Thank you for your answer.

If it is for RP reason just come up with what ever you want for ritual but don't give the player any of the benefits, make it visual story change only. Age hardly ever really comes up in actual game play, so extending his lifespan is non issue. Adding the actual Temple to PC with out adding similar templates to other character can cause problem and unbalance. I never heard of a ritual to actual apply the template, I was under assumption, they where born, often from a dragon polymorphed into a human form\ form of creature they are breeding with.

other option are character reincarnation, or Miracle or Wish spell, but even then I think twice about actual allowing the template.

In D&D 3.x there was a level-adjustment for characters getting a powerful template. So as to keep them on the same powerlevel as their groupmates.

For example if a Level 10 wizard became a Half-Dragon (iirc Level Adjustment +2), he would be a Level 12 equivalent character, thus needing the XP to get to 13th character level before being able to take another class level.

The LA only appied to Wealth-Per-Level and XP-Needed-to-Level. For all other intents and purposes he was still a character of 10 level.

So for your player, he would effectivly need to skip/wait out 2 levels of Wizard as the tradeoff for the powerful Half-Dragon abilities the template gives him. He becomes a virtual Level 14 character, thus needing the XP for 15th level to level again.

P.S.
There is no predetermined ritual for Half-Dragon Apothosis. It is up to you to make one up fitting your game's situation. But it is possible.
Examples: Magical Ritual, Alchemical Potion, Wish-Spell carefully worded, etc...

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The Dragon Disciple prestige class is very close to being a half-dragon. The simplest method would be to cross-train (per Ultimate Campaign) to a draconic bloodline sorcerer with levels in draconic disciple. It only requires wealth and time.

The CR of the template is used as a level adjustment, so a level 12 wizard/half-dragon would be the same as a 14th level character.

The ritual can be whatever you make it, but make it a long thing that takes multiple levels to complete (he's drinking a potion every night that gradually changes him... chanting incantations, lighting incense whatever).

When the party levels to 13, maybe grant him SOME of the bonuses that the template would add (I suggest the INT bonus, half the STR and CON bonus, half the AC). Grant energy resistance 10 of the appropriate type maybe.

When the party levels to 14, add the remaining properties. He's 'lost' two levels, but gained the template.

If his primary goal is to live longer, and the campaign is likely to last long enough for that to be an issue, he can take Immortality as an Arcane Discovery at level 20.

Sun Orchid Elixier. Makes you 20 again.

Iirc they go for between 50.000 to 80.000 GP.

I actually have something similar going on with my character in a home Runelords campaign.

She's at Dragon Disciple 8, Sorceror 6 (L14) as of this post. And is actually at the point where she really doesn't want to *be* any more dragon, because it would be a detriment to her abilities.

In fact, if something happened to turn her into a 'real' level/HD appropriate dragon, she'd actually *lose* effectiveness. Kind of neat how that's worked out (initially she wanted to go 'all in' on turning into a dragon...)
