Dragon78 wrote:A giant monster that grants kineticist abilities to people would be interesting.Handing out traits from a core class via monsters is....not really in keeping with the design ethos to date.
Especially since the A:TLA bit you cited wasn't really about bestowing new power, but rather teaching how to use it.
Furthermore, the Zaratan isn't really built for that role- it's built to be the "oh crud, this isn't an island, runnnnn!" dealie.
While I am all for keeping monster thematic, it does seem like they could make something like a druid/sorcerer hybrid class going where you establish a link with some mega life form, and draw a relatively small amount of power from it for spells or physical transformations. It is not like you would have to go to the source every time you leveled up (any more than the sorcerer does)*, and Pathfinder has a lot of big critters to use. It would also fit most of the books from the Project Nemesis series, Image Comics' Monstress series, or an inverted version of the Gamera Guardian of the Universe trilogy, where you draw power from Gamera instead of him getting healing from you.
* Although any GM worth his/her salt wouldn't waste the opportunity to have the source at some point take notice of the linked being....

I would still prefer the turtle island version but wouldn't mind a crab, fish, whale, and dragon version as well. It would keep the players on there toes to figure out which type it is, it's abilities, and temperament.
It would be cool to living creatures that can function as cities, dungeons, forts, sailing ships, etc.

People have been using a Zataran island turtle for decades now, don't think it will ever change.
Anyway, i'm going on a little vacation again and when i'm back I like to see this entire list covered in multiple bestiaries so I can use them in my own project :-p

I just finished compiling the beings from the book "Evil in our Midst", which mostly focused on less well known monsters culled from anthropological literature. I have gone and provided the names and descriptions of the chapter entries below: there are technically some more creatures in the book, but they are referenced in passing in the cultural notes section at the end of each chapter, and I don't have time right now to hunt down all of those in my massive list.
Note that I have excluded monsters that have already made it into Pathfinder (Oni, Huli Jing (=Kitsune), etc. Also I have excluded those that are more along the lines of "evil magic user" or "unique evil god" rather than a separate creature or undead (although this line is blurred for several of those listed.
Also, posting after Sincubus, I should say that although I am spoiling the full list for space reasons, it's nowhere near as long as the list, and since it's mostly novel I hope people will enjoy it and some devs might see inspiration down the road:
Raven Mocker/Kalona = Cherokee; undead witch-like creature; Hunt the dying and the sick, tormenting them first before devouring their hearts; Their appearance was foretold by the sound of crying ravens and wind; attacks leave no marks on victim, and with every heart eaten they gain an extra year of life; can become invisible, and can only be seen by powerful medicine men
Tsi-Sgili = Cherokee; undead witch associated with owls; can be any sex or age; keep dogs, wolves, owls, and lizards as demonic familiars; power derived from lizards that inhabit the witch; will devour the witch if not regularly fed with human flesh; violate sacred spaces and can soar through the sky or shrink in size to enter any dwelling; psychic powers including the ability to make there thoughts real.
Budu = Comanche; corporeal undead, who wander about at night; can be detected by the heavy tread they generate as they stalk there prey; touch paralyzes, twisting the facial muscles in the way similar to those who suffer a stroke;
Ga-Git = Haida NA; humanoid monsters, descended from shipwreck survivors who have gone mad from starvation and privation; covered in dark fur with talons for hands; little different from wild animals and do not wear cloths; develop supernatural powers, such as enhanced strength, flight, and shapeshifting. Fear water; lair in caves by day and hunt at night; could lull people asleep to kidnap them from their homes for food; can turn there victims into Ga-Git by breathing on their face; flight is limited, and only the most powerful can fly above the level of a house

** spoiler omitted **...
I presume that's this book? Would you recommend it?

Metee-Kolen - There is something behind the name I left off because I don't like 3-part names, it is an evil ice wizard from Native American mythology. It is mentioned in the same wiki page where A Wa Hondo and Atosis are mentioned. (This is what Wiki says about them: Metee-kolen-ol - a race of evil wizards with hearts of ice.
Abaris - One of the latest additions of A Book of Creatures, the Leprosy Gecko.
Caleuche - The ghost ship from South American mythology
Naglfar - The nail-bone ship from Norse mythology.
Sluagh - Much like the Caller in Darkness, it is an evil spirit unfit for either heaven or hell, they tear souls from other creatures and those fly with them in a twister-like form.
Nelapsi - The most powerful vampire species, one of them can kill an entire town and it has two souls and two hearts.
Kun Peng - Flying bird fish monsters from China
Apaosha - Demon of drought in the form of a black Pegasus, everywhere it flies horrid drought is soon to follow. I came across it while viewing all the mythology monster cards from the game Guardian Cross, which hold MANY myth monsters even Papinijuwari and Gaasyendietha.
Ouktazaun - A Genie of greed, gold skinned and the mist is covered with golden coins, can induce extreme greed in other creatures. They are cursed to forever guard the treasures they love so much.
Sessho-seki - A poisonous gas leaking stone, which holds the soul of a famous evil Kumiho.
Wani - Crocodile-like dragons.
Xoc Detsahi - Some form of dangerous cacti from the same myths as the Anaye
Yacuruna- River people/mermen that are evil, from brazil, they ride crocodiles, have big underwater cities and use living snakes as jewerly

And of course Rougarou (an advanced werewolf) and Raven Mocker, but I already knew about those creatures.
Pishtacos is fine as well, but only if done right and without shapeshift stuff going on. I'd like Pishtacos to be like the X-Men villain named Masque which hold the power over the flesh of other creatures, if it touches the flesh of other creatures they can deform it and control it, but only if they touch it. In this way they can turn a pretty girl into a horrid abomination in seconds and also a very ugly creature into a very pretty female. They can also grab the fat and flesh like it is clay and eat it.

Cole Deschain |

I know Loup Garou is French for werewolf. It wouldn't be the first time they used words that mean the same creature in different languages for a different creature.
Case in point, using this exact example: In the TSR days, the Ravenloft setting introduced Loup-Garou as particularly tough werewolves, distinct from the "common" variety, including Mountain Loup-Garou who were not vulnerable to silver, but who were instead subject to damage from gold.
Your proposed use of Loup-Garou as playable lupine humanoids is a bit further from the source, but hardly beyond the pale.

Nightterror |

Well in my world you have 5 werewolfs.
1: The weakest is the Skinwalker, which isn't even a werewolf, just a human with magical powers that can become a grey wolf when it wears the pelt of a wolf, it can do the same however when it wears the pelt of a bear, so that is the upgrade.
So, I really hope we still get to see Rougarou, as advanced werewolves.

Yep that's the book. I am quite fond of it because it doesn't do the normal tactic of providing just a dictionary list of entities with 2 lines of description if that. Instead each creature is highlighted in a 2-3 page short horror story, and then is followed up with information of the general culture the creature is derived from.
Granted some of the stories are kind of cliche, but at least it's an interesting tactic

I'd prefer to keep them literally fat sucking vampires. Which is both really horrifying and really gross. Basically make them something like the MotW from the xfiles episode "2shy", who was effectively a fat-sucking mutant who vomited digestive juices onto his victims and then slurped up the fat.
Although the creature you describe would be perfect for a new protean

Also I switched a bit with my Balaur idea.
Balaur were multi-headed hydra-like dragons in Romenian Myths, but I like them to change into deinonychus/megaraptor like dragons, being able to breath blue fire and covered in blue feathers, like the true dinosaur balaur they have two velociraptor-like claws.
They are Dragons, but wingless and much weaker than most other dragons, they stand as tall as a horse and are very light for their size, making them able to jump extremely far and high.

Upper limits are a problem, especially when some are trying to set a game world on the shell of a turtle or on the scales of a sleeping dragon.

Colossal doesn't have upper limits, does it? I thought it was anything bigger than sixty-four feet tall, whether that height is being expressed in feet, miles, or lightyears?

A fat sucking vampire is interesting but it would still be doing con damage regardless wether it is draining blood, fat, muscle, or bone.
Could be paired with other effects however. depending on how gruesome the ability is portrayed as, I could see it doing a combination of con and charisma damage, if the fat loss warps the person's features enough.
Something that feeding on bone would probably do strength damage as well. I don't think you can suck on muscle however. That is straight up eating someone. although something that caused muscle deterioration would again probably cause some sort of strength damage

Of all mythology of the world, my least favorite myth monsters come probably from Chinese mythology, too much gentle creatures, the same looking dragons, unicorns and tigers.
There are a couple of really great creatures such as the Xiao, Xing Tian, Zhenniao, Zheng and Dijiang though, but most others are boring and repeative.
Does anyone of you have a list of more obscure Chinese monsters that nobody ever heard about? I can't seem to find anything interesting on Chinese creatures that are no Dragons, Unicorns, Birds or Tigers. (You can keep creatures like Qilin, Longma and all that stuff from the list, I already know them, well, I don't really want to know them.)

Wannabe Demon Lord |

To anyone who posts Chinese monsters, please post everything you have. Including Dragons, unicorns, birds, and tigers.
The biggest problem I've found with Chinese monsters is that they very often repeat names. Even within the same bestiary. I've found cataloguing them to be very confusing.
Still, this guy's posted a lot of really obscure ones on this forum.
He hasn't posted the rest of them, and I'm uncertain whether or not he's going to, but here's a lot.

Nightterror |

Yes than you get people who post Qilin, The entire Draogn family and some tiger monsters with unicorn-horns... Because really, that is all China myths are about. Variation is far away in Chinese myths.
If you post a list, put those overused monsters in another table, because that wasn't my question, I can find 10.000 unicorns and dragons from chinese myths in 10 seconds.
And Longma is one of my new most hated creatures ever. So I dis-wish it from any future bestiary.

This post sums up exactly why everyone finds you so obnoxious. Don't dis-wish things. That's just a jerk move. And some of us want to know about all of the monsters, and decide which ones we like for ourselves, and don't want you choosing which ones we can and can't use. If MMCJawa or anyone else is kind enough to post some monsters, I want to see them all. Please be mature and take what you need off the lists without whining about the additional stuff, okay? And if what you want doesn't exist, then it doesn't exist.

Nightterror |

And thanks for those links, but I would be amazed if anyone could make good monsters from those creatures... never seen so much dull creatures together...
Like: Zhi lives in *Fuyushan (浮玉山). Its shape is like monkey. It has four ears. Its body looks like tiger. It has ox tail. Its sound is like barking. It will eat human.
and
Huan’s shape looks like a goat but it does not have mouth. It can live without eating food. It lives in *Xunshan (洵山). It cannot be killed.
Yeah right...
That's what I really dislike on chinese myths, bizarre in an uninteresting way, Japanese have bizarre monsters, but they are often unique and cool, and many great things can be done with them, with this I find it extremely impressive if anyone could make cool monsters from those creatures/gods.
There is a Iron God of the West, who flies on a two headed dragon? And having really NOTHING to do with metal at all...
Most creatures seem to be more like healing items than creatures, and everything sounds like crying babies?
A Book Of Creatures also posted a couple of Chinese monsters, but also there they are my least favorite monsters, the Turtle for example was really boring, and the Amphisbaena pig is just bizarre, I can see a snake having two heads that way, but a pig is just stupid.
Seeing all those chinese monsters in your links make me sad, as those are all wasted days in A Book Of Creatures for me... as he probably gonna cover them all, the ones I hated already are in that list like the black turtle.

That can be the case and all, but I asked for a list without the chinese dragons, unicorns, tigers and birds, because those creatures I want to see and learn about. I can ask for a huge list of chinese creatures, but then I end up getting the same old names with the features of the creatures I don't want to see.

"Fool Moon" of Dresden Files! That sucker was tough to put down (a Loup-Garou).

Fool Moon had 3 types. The Cursed werewolf, which was just an engine of destruction. Really cool for games. There was a gang of item giving wolf form that had me care deeply for each character. I want to role play one. The mysterious girlfriend was awesome.

Hmmm... many monsters did appear in 3.5 Fiend Folio... what's with that book anyway? Is it an OGL book? Because a LOT of monsters got added in Paizo's Bestiaries:
- Ahuizolt
- Caryatid Column
- Crypt Thing
- Dark Ones
- Demodands
- Monadic Deva
- Movanic Deva
- Disenchanter
- Fossegrim
- Half-Fey Creature
- Huecuva
- Iron Cobra
- Jackalwere
- Kelpie
- Mongrelman
- Oread
- Selkie
- Shedu
- Skulk
- Spriggan
- Wendigo
- Wickerman
- Yellow Musk Creeper
All of these got converted. So...
- Bacchae
- Bonespear
- Canomorphs
- Fensir
- Formians (armadon, observer, winged warrior)
- Steel Predator
- Symbionts
If these can make it, I'll be greatful ^_^

Those never make it, all creatures in that first list are from mythology or are used by the Tome of Horrors, those creatures (Steel Predator and Bonespear) aren't in any of those, so not possible to use.

Something that seems missing are some pig-based humanoids/monstrous humanoids, especially those useful for bad guy henchmen races. From a folklore standpoint a decent variety exist from the South Pacific, while they are also present in literature (Swine-things) and pop culture (Gamoreans, etc)
Orcs are sometimes given some "porcine" qualities in Pathfinder, but most orcs illustrated don't seem very pig-like, so a new race is needed.
