I really love my miniature, but I am aware that pewter is not very strong. After painting it, is there anything I can put on it that can not only help prevent chipping but possibly add a little resistance to bending? I handle with care but sometimes the table gets bumped or one of the other players accidentally knocks over my miniature. Any advice to help the increase the lifespan and improve overall durability is very much appreciated.

You can varnish the miniature, I recommend to use a matt varnish. That will protect against chipping. It is rather difficult to protect against bending, however a varnish might help there as well.
Use a spray varnish, outside and do not varnish when it is moist outside as that can ruin your paint job. If it is cold then best get your miniature back inside as soon as you are done spraying.

Varnish is definitely your best friend in this case. To expand on Magabeus's advice. Gloss varnish is a bit more durable that matt, but doesn't look as good, what you can do is use a gloss varnish for durability then overspray with a matt varnish for looks.
If the miniature came in multiple parts, pinning the joints together will make them stronger and less prone to breakage.
Teach your fellow players good miniature habits, like not rolling dice on the battle mat (if you use one). One way to do this is to get them to have their own painted miniature, then they will understand your point of view.
