If we have learned anything from college basketball and March Madness, we have learned that there is nothing more fun than watching a field of 64 get whittled down to a final winner.
Is there any chance of having 64 people move on in the open call round next year? Especially since the first round is done purely by voting now, would this make sense? Would people like this?

Although it sounds a nice idea, I think there is one logistic that the judges would hate about it (and those of us who provide detailed feedback on the winning items)...
Providing feedback on 32 is very time consuming already (usually a number of days for detailed feedback), so doing it for 64 would be a killer.

Top 64 could be voters on items. Top 32 could judges on items. One submission two rounds. Its not that far off from the previous years with voters, just that the top 64 are public. That said, I like 32 its not like we can sell more swimsuit issues or razor adds by having an extra round. And its not like #1 votes goes against #64 in head to head either.

This. Like an uber-cull for the last few days of voting and in lieu of announcing the top 100. More focused voting could be the difference between being an alternate and Top 32, and it would bring voters back when they're most needed and typically least interested.
