so I got invited to a kingmaker campaign and I've had a little character idea for a while.
So first of all my character has some house rules that make it work.
I'm a kobold who plans on finessing a two-bladed sword, GM allowed it to be finesse-able since exotic prof and weapon finesse are already steep. We start with 1 mstwrk weapon & armor, essentials(this was vague, but he put it as whatever your character needs to function within reason), and 200gps.
I plan on first level taking a level of two-weapon fighter or lore warden (haven't decided yet, but rolled for stats and they were good so I can do the int fine), then 3-4 levels of unchained rogue to get dex to damage. haven't decided on traits yet.
The problem is, and what i'm asking about, what can i do in the interim to make sure i'm at least somewhat effective during this time and that i live until level 4? (i'm thinking a bow, but is bowing worth it without feat investment?)

A bow's not a bad choice, but you might need something else to go with it if you aren't investing in any feats. Maybe tip it with a cheap poison? A crossbow is a fairly solid choice as well. You should also just tell you party buddies that they may need to hold down the fort until you reach level 4 beforehand so they're ready for this.

True. But you don't necessarily need to get it at level 1, just to help out a bit before level 4
I suppose but I don't know much of the initial situation in kingmaker but i assumed we'd be out in the wilderness for a while, so I didn't think shopping would be possible, is this not true?

What's the story behind this kobold?
well so far the rough draft of his story is that he left his tribe seeking knowledge, on dragons, on surface dwellers, basically anything that could help his tribe. But he kind of got distracted by all the different cultures and now he believes kobolds could reform and if they did claim the true might of what kobolds deserve. (think of Japan, keeping their culture but learning from other nations on industry and Military techniques)
however i don't have a reason for him to use the two-bladed sword yet(this is just me wanting to make a double weapon effective).

Technically speaking, you can go shopping wherever, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Like that shop keeper right outside the door to the boss.
i'm not sure how seriously to take this.
If this is true, then i'll definite buy several tanglefoot bags and some alchemist fire.

Yeah, I have a hard time conceptualizing a kobold (or goblin for that matter) waltzing around town and not raising the hue and cry from worried townsfolk.
But if your ideas (and the DM's ideas) on the acceptability of weird races are different, I guess he's just another one of them crazy adventurer dudes.
After all, even Neverwinter Nights had Deekin.

it's more like it's generally weird and gets glances, but people don't freak if you're not freaking either, though prejudice could still exist. And this would have been after a while, he's been working with people who know kobolds are usually Lawful Evil and thus has learned how to make it apparent that he isn't going to be an issue, he also wears Human style clothing, even though it's sized and shaped differently for him. he's been away from his tribe for a long while, and thus hasn't even actually seen another kobold for at least a few years.
distracted by culture was a joke, but not that I read it it was only to myself. :P
I'm working with the group to see if I can have been traveling with one of them for a while as well, or probably a few.

For levels 1 to 3, even doing 5 points of damage on a hit will make a difference. CR 3 creatures have about 20 to 30 Hp. So every little bit does help.
Second, use your mobility to set up flanks. May not get sneak yet, but still having both characters get a +2 to hit also means faster/safer combats.
As for a Bow, unless you are a fighter, or Human, you would not have gotten precise shot till level 3 anyway. But if someone is already engaged in melee, sounds like you should be engaged as well. Point Blank is nice in general, and would not hurt if you even are 33% ranged.
As for Dex to Damage, ask your GM about a modified version of "Dervish Dance." He is already allowing you to finesse the double sword. So I wonder if he would make that exception as well.

Frankly - I'd start the character with the 3-4 levels of unchained rogue. Manuevers aren't really worth doing for the first couple of levels as anything they're likely to work against will die in 1-2 hits anyway. Besides - you'd otherwise need to pay for Weapon Finesse or avoid melee entirely until you take a level in rogue anyway.
If you go straight for rogue - that extra d6 from SA with TWF should make you do more than enough in combat to be useful. As good as a fighter/barbarian? No - but at levels 1-2 few are.

well i planned on the rogues 3rd level dex to damage to be my gateway to decent damage, i don't want to retrain too much as is.
though, I suppose that would remove the need to multiclass...
but the multiclass i ultimately just lose 1 BAB as i plan on the rogue talents to be a combat feat and weapon focus.
