Well, there goes the one thing tying me down here. Just kidding. Sorta.

Looks like, contrary to what certain people here (whose names will go unmentioned because I don't actually remember them :P) assured me, my four months were used up automatically, not by logging in during new months. And since I never got a notification telling me "Hey, you're still subscribed", that's my four months wasted for about five hours' gameplay. Don't try and tell me they weren't wasted—training time is all well and good, but those months are primarily good for being able to play at all. ;)

I was kinda out anyways, so I can't really see "GOBLINWORKS YOU JUST LOST MY BUSINESS", but it is a bit disappointing. I always wanted to have the option of dropping by if the whim took me.

Goblinworks might want to take a look at how clear they make these things in the future. It might upset actual players more than it does me.

There was an announcement via the kickstarter and account emails, but if you didn't log in, it wouldn't hurt to email the customer support address, KC.

Maybe I'll try this weekend. Got too many moving parts to deal with with school and the trip back from Paizocon.

It's worth noting that I didn't pay for a dime of this, so I don't have any right to righteous anger. :P

If you want to stay in, I'll buy a package of goblin balls for you. Because I'd rather have a KC in PFO than have more dice.

Well if you actually did want to play and money was an issue - an early EE account with 5 months unspent experience is going to sell for enough real money to probably buy more like 8 or 12 months subs.

If it was a DT account and both char have 5 months unspent XP accumulated you could most likely sub a single account for 2 years on the proceeds of some of the recent sales.

Ryan's new business plan. Waiting for Decius to buy more players.

I thought the next month would not start unless you logged in. I thought we had the option to take breaks, and to save time for future patches.

You can but it's an option to suspend your account you click on in your subscription management page. It's not done automatically by when you last logged in to the game.

Edit: at least, that's what I understand from the last time I read my options on my account page. Been a while since I looked at it.

That was true in early January. On Jan 29, they sent an email with a giant "Managing Your Game Time" header that said:

GW Email of Jan 29 wrote:
Note: If you logged into the game in January, you will automatically use an additional month of game time on the anniversary day of your first login (i.e. if you logged into the game on the 15th of January, you'll consume your 2nd month of game time on the 15th of February) unless you opt-out by suspending your account before that date.

Can you imagine the uproar if folks came back to find their account had been suspended automatically just because they didn't log in during February, so now they'd missed out on four months of XP?

I wouldn't do is for anyone less awesome than Kobold freaking Cleaver. At least not without some condition other than "be more likely to participate".

We have been told, over and over again, that the xp power curve will not be a major factor. There should not be any significant "missing out" of Xp, when they decide to return.

Otherwise the statements that GW is doing what they can to narrow power gaps between 2 years of EE and a few week old OE, must not be true.

Since when has people not being aware of something or not believing it meant it must not be true? Scientist have been saying for two hundred years that evolution means people can stop believing that their-one-true-god made everything exactly the way it is. Isn't working for everyone. Must not be true?

Just because GW is saying that over and over doesn't mean that people are listening or believe it will work. This is no-win. If they suspend any account that doesn't log in, some people will complain. If they keep every account going once you log in, some people will complain. I believe Nihimon is correct that more people would complain if they suspended any account that didn't log in. It seems likely GW believes the same, or they'd have left it at the original method.

I believe if it is described in terms of an opt-in system versus an opt-out system, if both have to be proactively done, most would prefer the opt-in system option.

If I were told, you don't have a built up xp pool because you did not log in, I would more easily accept that. Compare that to looking to log in and I can't because I forgot to suspend the account or it was unclear that I had to.

I'm sure others feel differently, but I'm equally sure I do t stand alone in the preference I stated either.

You're obviously not alone, as KC is disappointed, too. I am (and I think Nihimon was also) saying they were going to get complaints either way. The decision comes down to which one you think will generate more/fewer.

(edited: I'd originally conflated Nihimon and Bringslite for some reason)

Goblinworks had to make a choice - this way or that way. They made that choice and did their best to communicate it to people. There will always be people who are disappointed that it wasn't the choice they'd have made, or who expected it to work the way they consider "intuitive". Life goes on.

I don't know of any game that has an opt-in system. If you have game time it always continues to run until you no longer have any or you purposely suspend it.

In EVE it also automatically hits up your credit card if you run out of paid game time and there is no way to stop that happening. You need to choose PAYPAL in EVE to avoid automatic billing.
