SAD always struck me as a good acronym as it clearly is sad in the sense it is meant to help out inept bandits who need every little bonus they could get.
There is no SAD in EVE just the spaceship equivalent of D&D crowd control spells and abilities.
A competent band of outlaws should be more than capable of stopping a merchant with hold person spells and tangle bombs and whatever else is needed and make the demand themselves without some game mechanic to make it easy for them. If the then renig on the deal well people will soon stop paying the ransom and fight it out instead.
Edam, I think SAD is mostly the mechanic, where other people can "look" into your Inventory(after you agree with the SAD) and take some sort of percentage of your stuff. The actual ambush/tripping/stopping of the merchants in their track is done with "blinds" and I think you may have a point against those. Even with fast Travel, bandits should be able to shoot a guy off his horse, without having to use extra game mechanics. Stephen said that a scripted fast Travel pony ride could be interrupted, after which the rider is dismounted and can not mount back up again. So is free game for the bandtis.
I think the mechanic of another player being able to see part of your inventory and take some is very needed, because I can see how deals can be made concerning harvesting in someones territory with this.
"If you allow me to harvest in your area for an hour, you can take half of what I harvest", or 1/3rd or whatever. Off course if you break this deal by not presenting yourself to the landowners so they can take their cut, you will be blacklisted. There are all sorts of tricky deeds that I can think off, like the harvester secretly handing over a stash to an unknown companion, before he lets him SAD himself, but that is up to the landowners to handle.
Thing is, you need some sort of way for the other to check what you are carrying so that they can take some, and I always figured that this what the SAD mechanic was about. So not some sort of "holding" mechanic, just a couple of buttons on your UI, like "Request SAD" and "Accept/Deny SAD" after which your Inventory UI opens up for the requester. Or if you deny, allowing the bandit to kill you rep-free.
You could add all sorts of restrictions/nuances to this, like being able to declare a precentage beforehand so that the looter can never take more then you agreed on, but that would make it more complicated, and I guess any trust that is going to be violated by either party, is going to blacklist you anyway. So maybe you can leave this mechanic pretty simple and straightforward.

I'm a bit confused by this. What game mechanic is making it easy on them?
Aren't hold person spells and tangle bombs game mechanics?
Btw, there is most definitely a SAD process (which is dependent on various mechanics) in EvE. There is no "one button push", and I don't expect there will be one in PFO.
SADs as they were previously described were connected to caravans, fast travel, blinds and possibly even faction and or alignment. I understand nothing was ever said or written that was concrete, but there was never a suggestion that it would be "easy".
My hope is that the system, whenever it is released, has many layers and is nit something that anyone can do unless properly trained and equipped.

I am looking forward to some more mechanics to enable SAD.
This way my skill as a blockade runner/smuggler would be in demand.
Remember not all PvP is combat :)
I agree, I would love for there to be true smuggling, unlike the Smuggler in SWG. Next to playing the role of a pirate / bandit, smuggler is always my next choice.

Lol, j/k
(But seriously, 5 copper.)
Trademarks are also part of "you have what you hold".

I would like to add that I am all for making SAD into something that would require more investment and is not a mechanic that is open to everyone who chooses to do so.
I figured that the "SAD" part was more a simple "UI-feature" of being able to see someone elses Inventory, but if SAD also includes the whole ambush/trip thing then that certainly should be a specialized mechanic.
