Bad character name choice in SS for "Oloch"

Pathfinder Adventure Card Game General Discussion

Hey,

Oloch is really a bad name ... You know why?

When we discussed in my play group which characters to choose...
Oloch was one of the top ranked ones UNTIL someone crossed the "O" letter out and replaced it with a "A".... ---> A-LOCH

Well, you should know that "LOCH" means english "hole" in Germany.

Who is playing Oloch and is happy with him?

I am. And I am very happy with him. He is in a group with Lirianne, Merisiel, and Jirelle that I play with my wife. He is awesome. We are in adventure 3 right now, I took start of the turn, +2, and then hand size for his power feats. He can now often let of any of them succeed at at a check (or at least have a chance) that they would have otherwise had not chance in the world to succeed at. I've often said, "Would you like +6 on that check?" Particularly checks to defeat ships.

Also, I'm not sure you are serious about thinking it is a bad name or not, but on the chance that you are, given that you had to first change his name and then assume that the word would have the meaning of a hyphenated term spelled like that changed version of his name in another language, I don't really think that is the kind of thing anyone that comes up with names for the characters is concerned about.

So, yes, A-LOCH would be a bad name for a character in a game that was created in the German language. But Oloch seems just fine for the name of a character in this game.

Plus Oloch isn't human. We can give him some leeway when it comes to names.

Oloch is a great character with a fine name - rhymes with "Moloch".

Good orcish name, says another person from Germany.

I'm playing Oloch in the home game I play with my wife and he's been very fun. Reliable and it's a fun combo to be able to heal and beat stuff down.

He is in our home play group of 5 and is paired with Ranzak. Ranzak pushes through decks, Oloch deals with most banes, and then heals Ranzak as needed. Great duo. Ranzak can expend resources to explore when he cannot get a free one and since Oloch plays on Ranzaks turn, he has his explore to heal Ranzak getting his blessings back into his deck. Oloch player is happy to deal with banes, and Ranzak player is happy to explore. Works here. We are on deck 3.

Just don't cross out the O and you'll be OK. How is this even an issue?

Someone crossed out "ly" and replaced it with "oot". Now your name is MyFoot. If someone wants to actually mock a name regardless what language, it is possible.

Some middle-eastern is named Sukhmandeep. In their country, that name has a legitimate non-offensive meaning. Only people who speak English will find humour in that name. It doesn't make the name bad for people in their country now, does it? Especially if that person never has to leave the country.

"Oloch" sounds very orcish to me and I don't speak German so it doesn't affect me. If "MyFly" meant something nasty in some unknown language it doesn't mean you had a poor choice in naming yourself either. So the name Oloch is fine as is.
