Occult classes in 1st / 2nd level playtest

Playtest Feedback

We ran all six classes at low level (1st & 2nd level) through the first bit of Carrion Crown.

Keneticist (Geo): Player enjoyed the class, found the mechanics to be pretty straight foreword, always had something to do, and landed damage on par with most 1st level characters.

Occultist: Same as above, this was the only character that had a reliable AO effect (burning hands) which came in useful for handling swarms, but was a little frustrated when faced with an animated object who's hardness was difficult for everyone in the group to get past.

Spiritualist: took the Fear emotional focus, which gave him a good boost to intimidate which came in handy dealing with a mob. The phantom proved useful in scouting (but hardly overpowered). Said he would like to see a greater range of customization for the phantom....but not ala eidolon style/level. Also found some of the spells on the spell-list counter intuitive (Shadow conjuration/evocation) lack of fear, and very few touch spells to choose from.

Mesmerist: Limited number of encounters vulnerable to mind effecting left this player with very limited options for a good part of the game, but no worse off than an enchantment or illusion based caster of any other type.

Psychic: character played very much like any other dedicated caster. Player is looking foreword to a higher level play experience so that he can utilize a broader range of abilities, but other than that enjoyed the experience.

Medium: Most often channeled the Rabbit Prince, ended up almost always holding action for lack of anything useful she could do. Landed a hit once. Felt like a "fifth wheel" the majority of the time. Lack of options at low level pretty much killed the experience. Suggest increasing to 6th level casting and having some spells available at 1st level....or greatly increasing the effective abilities of low level spirits/or number of spirits you can utilize at low levels.

All in all absolutely no complaints with flavor and concept of the classes. Some (Medium) need more work than others to allow a meaningful contribution at low levels.

We will be using the same characters but at 8th level for our next play-test.

How lucky! He was actually the 6th wheel!

Jokes aside, Mark has said that there's likely to be some non-PFS updates on Wednesday to help address this issue. Even characters playing the strength spirits (like my Medium) are feeling a bit frustrated by the lack of versatility pre-7.

I'm very interested to see the level 8+ playtests because of how critical the level is for most characters. My own Medium just hit 3 in PFS, will be moving towards 4 next weekend with another Emerald Spire run.

Ya, I'm looking foreword to trying at higher levels, where I have more options to work with myself ;)
