blade bound magus

Rules Questions

I'm currently playing a blade bound magus and on the next level I was thinking about taking a level in wizard universal which would give me hand of the apprentice and since I can't take a familiar I was thinking if making my blackblade into my arcane bond weapon so here is my question since I have dervish dance can I still apply my dex modifier to my damage when I use hand of the apprentice and can I use my arcane bond to cast a spell from my magus spell book that I haven't prepared like I can for my wizard class

No, it's a thrown weapon at that point so you will not get your dex to damage. (dervish dance specifically requires the weapon to be in your hand to get dex to damage, when you throw it you're no longer holding it so it will be str based) Also, throwing won't work with spellstrike / spell combat.

No, you will only be able to use it to spontaneously cast spells from your wizard spell book (you will need to have two separate spell books--one for wizard and one for magus). Also, your wizard spells will not work with spell combat / spellstrike--only your magus spells will, even if the spell is in both books, or on both spell lists. Only spells specifically in magus slots work with spell combat / spellstrike.

There is pretty much absolutely no reason for you to lose magus caster levels to multiclass into wizard.

Ok thanks

There is no requirement for separate spell books. A magus/wizard can scribe all spells into a single tome, needing to inscribe each spell only a single time.

Claude is right on most fronts, I just want to point out that you don't need to have separate spellbooks with a magus/wizard multiclass (see rules about using spellbooks from other characters in the magic chapter).

You *do* need to keep track of your wizard and magus spell slots separately though, as only magus 'spell slots' will work with spell combat. You should also note which spells are magus/wizard only or are present on both spell lists, so you don't accidentally prepare a spell in the wrong slot. Your arcane bond would also only be able to cast spells in your book that are on the wizard spell list.

I'm not sure if you could use your blackblade as your bonded weapon, but if you do you wouldn't be able to use the nifty crafting/upgrade ability since blackblades can't be upgraded independently of their class progression.

All in all, it's not really worth the multiclass. Maybe a level dip into wizard for certain school powers (diviner/foresight comes to mind) could work depending on your idea, but you'd be even farther behind on spells levels as a magus. The "Spell blending" arcana would let you pick up a few wizard-only spells for your magus without losing caster levels if that's what you're looking for. It's great for Kensai's to pick up mage armor, for example.

Elementalist also comes to mind. Being able to change your shocking grasp yo cold, fire or acid on the spot is handy.

Sadly, afaik, thedevs haven't come out with a formal ruling in regards to crafting and the black blade. Check with your gm. There's a major thread about this you can find somewhere on the messageboards.
