Did he now?
and he says he heard it from WotC?
They already have element mixed in from Planescape into the D&D core rules, but they also have elements of Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms as well.
When exactly did he say they were releasing it?
I'm not seeing it on their release schedule for at least the next 10 months (at least from what we've seen thus far).
Not that it matters, but I would think they'd release a more popular setting as an core campaign setting first. If they want planescape in there, then they'd release parts of it with each campaign setting they release.
Planescape wasn't one of the more popular settings from what I recall. It had it's hardcore fans, but there are other settings I think would be better sellers.
So, if that's the route they are going...call my mystified at their reasonings behind it.
It's possible, just a little odd that they would choose that particular setting to release.

Well, it seems there may be a TSR-ish release of settings with 5th edition. 3rd edition had Greyhawk as default, then released Forgotten Realms, and the created Eberron. There was also a single Dragonlance book, but that was picked up by a 3rd party. Same with "Oriental Adventures", which may as well have been called "Legend of the Five Rings Lite", since so much of it was tied into Rokugan.
4th edition had Forgotten Realms, Eberron, and Dark Sun.
5th edition has eluded to Forgotten Realms (we know it's their default), Eberron (warforged are a race in the DMG, supposedly), Dragonlance (references to Tika Waylon, Lord Soth as the image of the death knight, Kender as a race in the DMG), Planescape (adding in the modrons, and hints at possible aasimar, original tiefling, and the genasi), and possibly even Dark Sun (thri-kreen in the core Monster Manual). There's also multiple pantheons of deities in the PHB.
I can see them releasing Planescape. While not a fan of the setting myself (I thought the space given to Modrons in the MM could have been better fleshing out the worg, winter wolf, blink dog, and the other non-animals shoved into the Miscellaneous section. That, and I couldn't stand the art style of the 2nd edition books), having official stuff for those who do love it is nice. And Planescape fans are pretty vocal.

That last bit (Spelljammer, too!) makes me suspicious that you friend is working on pretty old information that floated around for a bit (well over a year ago), from the Mike Mearls "Many Worlds of D&D" article. Can't find the original, but there's an old thread on it here. No horse in the race--it'd be neat to see some of my old faves--but the claim looks suspiciously familiar.

Re-release? As in, print The Factol's Manifesto & co again? Doesn't sound like a solid plan. The hardcore fans already have them, others won't be all that interested. Making new stuff for it? Sure, but I'd expect them to print a campaign guide, a player's guide, and one adventure, just like they did for Forgotten Realms and Dark Sun in 4th. I can tell you for free, I ain't holding my breath (and I'm one of the above Planescape freaks).

Big Planescape fan. That said, I'd personally rather see them take the general approach of single book products where the product offers player options, a campaign setting summary (high level overview and details on specific areas addressed in the adventure), a campaign specific bestiary and an adventure path. I would prefer they take the last official version of the setting from earlier editions of the game and use that as the base assumption of the timeline. That way, the book is complete for someone who wants to use it to run the AP, provides the general setting concepts and description but doesn't invalidate the older materials that veteran players may have or people could get from dndclassics, etc.
The last thing we need is a glut of book A, B, C, D, E which is just a 5E update of the 2E or 3E books of the same name.

My preference would be similar, but not exactly the same. One big book that collects the best of ALL the previously released material for a setting. Perhaps not in as much detail as prior focused supplements, but enough so that it could be considered the definative, fairly comprehensive, go-to source for information about the setting, regardless of what edition you play.

I would be beyond ecstatic if this happened. Although, I'm sure it won't... That's not the best way to make money, unfortunately.
I am crossing my fingers for a 5E Planescape though if this doesn't happen!

My DM just told me that WOTC is re-releasing planescape for 5e which made me so happy!!!! I will answer questions about it because I know all about the re-release
Be very careful about what information you get from someone who spoke/was told by WotC. Wizards has a bad reputation about such crap.
It's one thing to hear they plan on doing something for a setting. It's a completely different thing, however, when they say the work is being done.
So, if I were you, take it with a grain of salt because, in the end, the source material comes from WotC. And it becomes no matter at all who the middle guy is, in this case, your DM.

I came here for a press release or Word of God, and all I got is somebody who has a friend who has a friend who has a friend who spoke with somebody but it was early in the morning and the monkeys were still hungry and I've had to feed the monkeys did you feed your monkeys? /sigh

I dunno. I would be very interested in NEW material for Planescape. A rehash of the old material, with the stylized art replaced by generic "adventurer doing action-y stuff" like in fourth edition, without the language, likely without the deeper understanding of the setting that was its starting point, that would feel like merely a way to wring money from it. YAY! I can now play Planescape in fifth edition... which amounts to a Points-of-Light setting full of the standard warforged, dragonborn and various shades of elves PLUS rogue modrons and bariaurs, where some characters have faction membership, doing the standard action-heavy adventuring... Let's just say it has all the elements needed for exquisite suckage.

My take from the OP saying "re-release", isn't a rehash of the old stuff just updated to the new edition, but a "re-release" of the setting itself, similar to the "re-release" of Dark Sun for 4th edition, or the "re-release" of Forgotten Realms with each new edition. Probably would have been a better choice to use "release" instead of "re-release".
