Hello all,

Why I'm making a new character:
My lvl2 Illusionist died this week at a PFS table after getting hard railed on a few feats/abilities, that my Gnome Illusionist had, and arguing with the GM for a while. Which he then focused a monk to pummel my Illusionist's face in even though the Ranger 10' away was pelting him with arrows and I hadn't done any damage except was steering the ship and tried to color spray the monk once....

I got hard railed on my Effortless Trickery feat as I wanted to cast silent image on the boat of myself and then maintain it for the rest of the day as a swift action as the feat allows. The argument was that even though steering the ship was ONLY a "move action", it would be too difficult for my gnome to keep the concentration of the Silent Image with a "swift action" even though my gnome was an Illusionist specialist, with spell focus illusion, and effortless trickery, and the gnomes racial trait to boost illusions (emphasis on effortless trickery that specifically lets me maintain a concentration check for an illusion as a swift action.).

So the GM want to cut the legs out from under my character even though that was the only thing my character was focused at, and had restricted evocation damage magic. Wasn't the first time though because the same GM hard railed me with the Bodyguard feat last time I played on a different character, saying that if I used Bodyguard to aid an ally adjacent getting attacked that it would eat up my next turn's standard action so my character could only use a swift or move action next round.)

So, after that fiasco I'm looking to make a new small (halfling) character that's ranged and fun.

1) Thinking of something like an axe thrower character with charging hurler and rhino charge. Like a Native American tomahawk chucker or something similar.

2) or some type of archer character that has some abilities or tricks up his sleeve. I've looked up Paladin archer, Inquisitor archer, heard rogue archers and bard archers suck, and also looked at cleric archer. I'm wanting to go a different route than Zen Archer though so suggestions for anything else would be great and I'm kind of wanting to have a decent +int or skill point pool to be decent at things other than just combat.

I'm thinking I'd like to play a Halfling as my only small character (gnome) just bit the dirt and I have a few miniatures for small characters.

If anyone has some good ideas or thoughts please post them. I'm smacking my head up against the wall as I've been trying to figure out a build or feat selection while still being Halfling that is effective AND fun during PFS.

So, browsing a little bit of the PRD I've been wondering if a few things are possible.

Is it possible to use Wis mod to +dmg, instead of Str (or Dex if using Agile weapon)? I'm wondering if it's possible for the Sensei to somehow use Wis mod for both +atk & +dmg.

Is there any way to build an Intelligent fighter or archer? I'm mainly looking at a 2 level dip in Master of Many Styles for Kirin Strike (x2 Int mod to dmg). Wondering if this could make a good Archer or Melee build somehow.

EDIT: Guided weapon quality is not PFS legal.

EDIT: Kirin Style / Strike is probably not a good idea. Just found that it takes roughly 3 rounds before you're able to start adding that x2 Int mod to damage.

Still any ideas for a Sensei build?

Sovereign Court

Any ideas on a Sensei build that uses Wis for +atk/+dmg that would make a good archer build? Or a good archetype/build that does archery with a good amount of skill points or pumps Int?

So far all my ideas have fallen flat due to 1 reason or another. Could use some suggestions.

How does the 'Monk of the Empty Hand' work?

It says they are proficient with the Shuriken only and treats normal weapons as improvised weapons.

They can make FoB with unarmed attacks or improvised weapons. Are MotEH not proficient with Unarmed Strikes? Also, when it says FoB with improvised weapons is it talking about any of the normal weapons that MotEH is not proficient with or does it mean items like a 'broom' a 'piton' or an 'ink pen' (things found in the Goods section).

I know certain items are able to be drawn 'freely' like the shuriken, arrows, and such. Would I be able to draw Pitons freely? How about Wushu Darts listed in the Martial Weapon section?

I'm wanting to FoB with something at range for slightly more damage than a shuriken if MotEH will let me. Seems like a fun idea.

You could try a Swashbuckler (Flying Blade) and throw daggers and starknives. You could also potentially multiclass it with Rogue (Knife Master) and be able to alternately do melee or ranged combat with daggers, though it's rather feat-intensive.

Doting for whem Im not on a tablet.

Unfortunately I don't own the ACG and won't be buying it for some time. I'm pretty pressed on cash atm. Anything outside of the ACG? Also, any answer to my question above about Monk of the Empty Hand?

Wondering if I can FoB with an improvised weapon to do like 1d6 with (19-20 x2) crit. I believe that's what the MotEH would get me dmg wise for a thrown improvised weapon.

I can't seem to find it but somewhere on the forums is a thread titled "I throw a rock at it." And that's the entire concept is throwing one really big rock at an enemy. If you have a copy of Inner Sea Gods try a Knife Master Rogue/Weapon Master Fighter/Sentinel of Pharasma. It throws some amazing daggers.

I own about 15 books but ISG and ACG are two that I don't own yet. Not sold on the Knife Master concept, it sounds good but you'd have to have a reliable way to get Sneak Attack on command though or else that's only going to be useful on the 1st round when opponents are flat footed.

Trying to think of some ranged concept that isn't the standard route everyone goes and if I could get a high Int or plenty of skill points that'd be great.

EDIT: Also, the rock concept seems a bit weird. PFS GM's will often just say there's no big rocks nearby and carrying a huge rock all over the place has to have some penalties or something..

Well, actually Im playing an archaeologist halfling and i wouldnt say he sucks, even when not optimized. I have spent all my feats in the archer route (except lingering performance, wich is like a must have). I think its a versatile class, dont know if you could be interested, but has all you are asking for:

- Has a good skill pool (bardic knowledge helps)
- Does a decent ranged damage (not the best, but decent) with his sling-staff (you can short-bow here, mine is just for flavor)
- Has some arcane tricks granting him some survival and utility
- Is a good party face
- Can also play the scout rol, and do the work with traps
- Lvl 3 spells let him cast a phantasmal mount for hours/lvl, so he can move 20'/2lvls & full-atack in a round (at high levels he can fly while shooting)

Hope it helps.

Not a big rock, but many tiny ones.

=)

Lore Warden fighter archetype might fit the bill - smart fighter, more skill points than the average smasher type, free Combat Expertise....

Im currently playing one at low levels (not society play) but eventually he will two weapon fight with handaxes so we can either melee w finesse or throw, with things like the Strong Arm, Supple Wrist trait, Charging Hurler as you mentioned, and my personal favorite Sliding Axe Throw for tripping at distances. Wielding two of the same weapon allows you to maximize those Focus and Specialization feats too.

I imagine that typical movie action hero striding across the room, smacking two guys, throwing something at a third, drawing another weapon to smack a fourth.......sounds fun, but I haven't gotten to high enough level to tell you if it truly works well.

Swashbuckler seems perfectly fit to build cool-fighting-style warriors, and while the Obediences can be pretty wacky, taking levels as a Sentinel of Pharasma makes dagger throwing so good its silly.

And theres way too many books to keep up, so Im a huge fan of all the online resources out there to help us poor gamers so check out those links!

Brutish Ninja that likes throwing Shuriken. Drawing Shuriken is a free action so use a Katana in one hand when you need to melee and throw shuriken when you want range.

Throwing builds are hard but you should be able to make it work.
