What do people think is the best class for this?

Advice

I've been considering trying to create a demon hunter and I've generally decided on. . .

1) eldritch knight 10
2) arcaĺnist 9
3) ?

This gives me a nice build for a scout type who goes in finds the demon and kills them. A casting mechanic I like, eventual 9th level magic, decent skills (high int). Essentially it's taken the hybrid class mechanism and delivers a created type with 3/4 bab and slight reduced casting.

Now my original first level was ranger provides the initial +1 bab, tracking boost, favoured enemy demon. However with the slayer and other classes coming out I figured I'd ask what people thought would be the best class for this build. My criteria are. . .

1) Must have full Bab I.e. +1 at first level.
2) Should work thematically as a demon hunter.
3) Should be possible to fit as a scouty, light armour and investigative (of the are you a demon investigation not the who killed this little old lady) type of character.
4) Preferably avoiding any classes who rely on outside sources e.g gods for their power.

The obvious 'demon hunter' that comes to my mind totally fails to fit your criteria. I'll put it in a spoiler, as it's

A suggestion that totally fails to fulfil the OP's criteria :

I'd go for an approach that detects demons & then locks them down, making them easy pickings: channeling cleric specialized vs demons. This approach is very strong if you have an ally or three, but fails if you are alone. What use is locking down a foe, if you don't have an ally to finish it off while it is helpless? Damage from channel energy is weak, you want it for the daze demons effect.

I'd go for a charismatic Cleric of a Lawful Neutral god. E.g. Lawful Neutral Ra has the Rulership portfolio. Choose negative channeling with the Rulership variant channel option. Choose the feat Alignment Channel (Evil or Chaos). You don't need Selective Channel, although it would allow you to channel effectively to harm and daze non-demons. As a neutral cleric of a neutral god you can be a Versatile Channeller, which is great for a channel-specialist.

Detecting demons: Whenever you suspect there's a demon nearby, use Alignment Channel to harm and daze Evil Outsiders. If there's no demon around no one will even notice you did it. Any nearby demons will be harmed, dazed, and (check with your GM about this!) possibly take some visible effect such as flinching, smoking, etc.

Defeating demons: Use your Alignment Channel (Evil) to daze and harm evil outsiders. Then your allies cut them down as they stand helpless. Demons tend to have poor Will Saves, and your DC will soon be above 20. The Quick Channel feat, available at 5th level, lets you channel twice in a round. Even powerful demons are unlikely to make two consecutive DC20+ will saves.

Dealing HP Damage: One can actually follow the above route and still be quite an effective melee combatant. Full BaB is not possible, but you can have bigger combat numbers than a full-BaB combatant. E.g. With domains Animal and Plant(Growth) (e.g. a Horus separatist) one can have a damage-oriented pet PLUS the martial godhood that comes from swift action Enlarge Person and a two-handed reach weapon. This approach is at least as effective as a dedicated full-BaB martial. It's grossly unfair that this should be the case, but it's true nonetheless.

Most demons will flee in terror from such a PC, even at low levels.

Pros: Annihilates demons. Full divine casting. Powerful all-round offense.

Cons: Not full BaB. No arcane casting. Not what the OP asked for.

As you are only taking first level not sure there's much between the options.

Slayer is solid, studied target is more versatile than favoured enemy, but may not be as strong thematically.
Swashbuckler is good for a dex build, Daring infiltrator could be a solidish on theme archtype. only 4 skill points though.
Is there anything more 'demon-huntery' than a paladin? det. evil could help you in your hunt. not so good with the scouty light armour thing though :)

Thanks for the suggestions I'll give it some thought although I admit I'm trying to avoid clerics/paladins simply because I personally just don't like playing those classes. Hmmmm maybe if I went more eastern than western with multiple gods I could satisfy my distate.

Sounds like a Ranger to me. Full BAB, no gods required, Favored Enemy: Outsider (evil) fills the "Demon Hunter" prerequisite, scouty, light armored, investigative (track, survival, etc).

Plus they can go two weapon fighting and use the twin blades of azzinoth.

i was going to suggest swash dip for the "please take my dex options and parry for SAD characters" thing, but as noted above, the slayer and ranger both work nicely as well due to their specialized target bonuses

Another idea; one level of Bloodrager with the Celestial bloodline makes any melee attack of yours do damage which bypasses DR/good and does +1d6 to evil outsiders when in a rage. Also you get fast movement (goes well with light armor & a mobile character) while raging or not, and the bloodrage is a handy emergency buff against anything.

Hmmm hadn't really considered the bloodrager not much of a beserker personally but I'll take a look at it when its not 1am and see what I think.

I agree ranger is a strong option especially if I take the archetype Youkai hunter, slayer seems a bit iffy as they're more an assasin than a hunter flavour wise. Nothing against the class mechanics just the flavour text.

EDIT
So bloodrager needs a bloodline same as blood arcanist which would mean I'd either to make them match (both draconic or celestial) or maybe try some shenanigans and claim it was an eastern celestial dragon and while the draconic bloodline manifests as a result of the arcanist (claws, breath attack) the celestial side shows up when bloodraging and it gets drawn out . . . hmmmm have to compare these but I think ranger has a slight edge mechanically.
