Is the Pathfinder Savant (Arcane Savant on d20pfsrd) PrC good? bad? why?

Advice

Here's the class for those who haven't seen it.

I'm not sure where to place this. It seems like less of an upgrade and more of a utility side-grade for a caster, since you're effectively trading class-advancement increases like bloodline or arcane schools and a caster level for lots of little powers.

the grabbing other class' spells is really nifty looking though, and the dispel focus might be neat for arcanists as well i guess?

I thought i'd get y'all's opinions on it.

The toughest part is the caster level, but as a wizard, you can stomach that and still be very strong. Yeah, it's a sidegrade but a good one, adding relevant options.

i'm really liking esoteric magic and the 6th and 7th level powers--and getting a specialized bardic knowledge and being able to take 10 on the core arcane caster skills including UMD (!!!) at 1st level is nothing to sneeze at.

scroll master is okay, and the rest of the middle abilities are kinda meh (writing-based traps aren't overly common in my experience), but it seems nice for either a 1-level dip or an all-in route, especially if you can get the esoteric scholar fame thing to repair the CL hit or take the magical knack trait to do the same. the former is preferable, since it gives you spells learned/known as well as the CL increase, but some DMs dont play in golarion, or they don't allow a similar refluff.

It's all about Esoteric Magic, getting underleveled spells off the Summoner and Bard lists.

"At each class level beyond 1st, the Arcane savant chooses a spell from any class’s spell list and thereafter treats it as if it were on the spell list of his base spellcasting classes; if his base class could not normally cast that spell, it is treated as 1 level higher."

Are spells that sorcerers and wizards poach from the Summoner list treated as 1 level higher? Technically, an arcane caster can cast dominate monster--but it's a 9th level wizard spell and a 6th level summoner spell. If sorcerer/wizards can get 2nd level haste/slow, 3rd level black tentacles/dimension door, 4th level magic jar/teleport, etc. then this is a good prc esp for sorcerers.

It also mixes nicely with the Razmiran Priest archetype for the sorcerer. At 9th level you can cast spells from scrolls using your spell slots and the with the pathfinder savant's scroll master ability you will do so at your own caster level.

Basically you simply keep a large number of divine scrolls and use them as extra spells known.

But then you can't abuse scrolls created at levels higher than your caster level...

You can, but you can also abuse scrolls created at levels lower than your caster level too, which is nice.

This is one of my favorite PRC's, but I've not had a chance to play one yet.

yeah- what abraham said... in a campaign without SLA early entry for PrCs a razmiran priest/pathfinder savant can be a more effective mystic theurge than a mystic theurge can.

Couldn't it just be about character concept, roleplaying and having fun?

well sure, but that it has some neato mechanical applications is great too.

you can play anything at all for character concept and roleplaying--and people can have fun with optimized builds too (shocking revelation, i know)

What's the 'esoteric scholar fame' thing? I can't find it.

He was probably referencing a Pathfinder Society prestige reward.
