Does the "vengeful" trait work with spells?

One of my players insists on using it with his sorcerer but I think it's meant to be used with physical attacks, maybe ray spells.
What do you guys think?

Vengeful - Benefit(s): Whenever you strike the last creature that damaged you in the past 24 hours, you gain a +1 trait bonus on damage rolls against that creature.


Strike leans towards manufactured weapon damage, but I think it's reasonable to allow. Sorcerers don't really want to get hit that often (even my own +++hp one).


Also remember it doesn't stack with itself.

So basically, for getting hit by a creature he can forever get +1 damage against them. Since the sorcerer is typically going to be using single attacks against a target it's +1 damage per round.

I agree that it probably wasn't meant to apply, but in this case it's mostly irrelevant since its just not going to be a big contribution.


It's vague enough that a DM could limit it however they want, but I would let "strike" include any damage done with an attack roll (so no to fireball, but yes to rays).


So with a spell like magic missile or scorching ray the +1 would be applied to each individual hit, right?


Trait bonuses (like almost all other bonuses) don't stack. So you would only ever get a +1 bonus to hit against the last creature that damaged you in the past 24 hour.

I think you're confused. The trait gives you a +1 to DAMAGE rolls whenever you strike the last enemy that damaged you.

That's why I ask if it would be applied multiple times to spells that hit the same enemy multiple times in the same turn.


Sorry, you're right I don't have no clue what I looked up.

I would treat it like sneak attacking or Arcane Trickster's Surprise Spells ability; "This damage is only applied once per spell... In the case of magic missile, the extra damage is only added once to one missile, chosen by the caster when the spell is cast."
