Surviving a Rough Time (Spoilers)

Rise of the Runelords

So, I checked out the difference between the old and new versions of the Iron Cages of Lust a few days back, and noticed that they present a possible way to survive getting "offered" to Delvahine. Now, considering both the Life Drain AND the Agonizing Touch abilities, is there really anyway to survive the "encounter" with her? I imagine a Death Ward would save you from the Life Drain, but what exactly can protect you from a Supernatural source of non-lethal damage? Would be amusing to see someone actually pull it off.

I'm AFB at the moment, so the only thing that I can think of off the top of my (very tired) head is the Invulnerable Rager archetype (APG) for the Barbarian.

I guess I should bump this thread...

Death Ward would indeed spare you energy drain and the Agonizing touch could be thwarted with something like a Ring of Regeneration or anything that gives you Fast Healing such as Music of the Spheres. Of course she is likely to try to dispel these effects if possible. And dominate the pc to force submission to the dispel attempts. There's room for a particularly... adult-themed encounter as she attempts to dominate and master the pc and the pc uses various methods to "fend off her advances." She might be infuriated by a complete failure but likely turned on throughout - dominants tend like it when someone puts up resistance as long as it is eventually overcome. I would strongly recommend the pc negotiate a strict time limit for the "few minutes of fun."

The text mentions she'd be disappointed if the target survives, but can let it slide if the target is a smooth talker.

Regarding the Agonizing Touch, unlike the succubus energy drain, it still requires a melee touch attack roll.

I would normally assume that attacking each other is a bit different of an agreement than some 'friendly grappling' and subsequent unanticipated (by one party) loss of life. I mean, if she's free to just attack the subject, then the subject is free to just attack her back, correct? Then it just becomes a question of "Can you kill this monster in this room by yourself".

I had assumed that Delvahine wasn't simply lying to the party and intending on pouncing on one victim in a room by herself. My assumption was that she was making a genuine (if devious and evilly minded) offer and she was assuming that her chosen 'partner' might not warded against mind control and energy draining (or that her abilities might 'convince' the subject to drop any spells or items providing such protection).

That was why, I assumed, the text mentioned that she would be disappointed if the target survived. If she just tricked the target into another room then started a fight, she wouldn't be disappointed if the target survived, she'd be dead!

Of course, I know that the Agonizing Touch could be used against a Dominated subject, and could also be used as a bit of a 'surprise' against a partner, but I didn't read it as part of her plan to get someone in there and just starting fighting them non-lethally (especially since this particular non-lethal attack can't be used every round). I mean, I don't think it would be in the spirit of the offer to go into the room, fly into the air, and whip someone to death (or unconsciousness) either.

We just completed Runeforge in the campaign I am playing in. My character, a Rogue (Charlatan/Scout) 8, Fighter (Lorewarden) 2, Noble Scion 4 took Delvahine up on her offer. My character is a gigalo with both profession (Courtesan) and Peform (Kama Sutra), plus Skill fous (Bluff), Skill Focus (Diplomacy) and alot of other Feats that add to both. His Dilpomacy was, for that encounter, with Charming Trait added in, a +41.

We used the Death Ward spell and I already had a Bear's Endurance buff on. I had Mind Butressing on my armor, so was immune to Mental Control. Using Dilpomacy, i was able to barter for 5 minutes minimum to receive her component. During the actual exchange, i was able to use my Perform (Kama Sutra) to distract her enough that she didn't use her touch attack as often.

I lasted just three rounds shy of 10 minutes before finally passing out, which defintly was enough time to get the component and make a lasting impression...
