Spartan Shields: what are their statistics?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

My group has recently been having a discussion different movies, and we have been going over what a Spartan Shield like those in "300" would be considered in game terms for Pathfinder.

Some have said that they are considered Heavy shields since they can be used for a Shield Bash. Others have said those argued a heavy shield is too small.

The Tower Shield was another consieration, but I have pointed out that the shield used by the Roman Legionnaires in "Gladiator" are tower shields.

One option that was suggested was use the AC bonus for Tower shields as well as the ability to use it as cover. Modify the Max Dex bonus and the AC penalty, and also the weight. There's still disagreements for the shield bash damage and the spiked damage, also. Weight, we were thinking of decreasing it down to about half.

Opinions?

Heavy steel (or bronze) shield, aaaaand... done! :)

The rest is done with the spartan's extraordinary training, ie. feats. Like shield focus, improved shield bash, weapon focus(heavy shield bash), etc.

Simply heavy shields. Hoplites are phalanx soldiers, fighter archetype.

Even Roman shields aren't quite Tower shields. A Scutum was 37"- 42" x26" or so. About 12#.

The Romans, due to specialized training, could use that size of shield as a Tower shield, giving them cover.

A True Tower shield was 4 to 5 ft. high.

I would rule heavy shields and spartans have a special feat allowing them to receive +1 to AC for each adjacent feat holder in the phalanx.

A Hoplon is best represented by a Bronze Heavy Shield, I believe.

If building Spartans, make use of teamwork feats. They didn't train in single combat nearly so much as they trained in unit combat. The Phalanx Fighter archetype is a good starting point as well (although the Talented Fighter is much better).

I just recently had plans to run a Greek myth inspired game that would lead up to battling the Persian invasion, but it stalled due to lack of players.

It's a teamwork feat called Shield Wall.
